Political Correctness

What is Politically Correct?

I have a friend who is in severe pain and being eaten up by a cancer that is killing her. She has no insurance that covers the cancer and cannot get help. She is dying. She can't even get pain pills to help numb the pain!! She was literally told by the doctors that she would be better off if she was an illegal alien or at least another race, because she COULD get help, if she was not white. It is because she is a white woman that she is unable to get any help.

I thought the idea was to create "equality" but practically any hospital will tell you the "equality" that has been created is nothing like what was intended. It is a monster.

Did you just call her a "white woman?" See, I'm not offended. If you'd have said "black woman," would someone been offended? It's all about the value or connotation each individual places on words. I think the whole thing is plain out stupid. I am a shaved head, bald, big, thick white person. Call it like you see it, and noone should be offended. These "rascist screaming" people must associate something negative with being called any title, whether "white, black, hispanic, Jewish, Indian, etc." If you associate bad things with any of these words, then you Would consider it rascist. People can only associate with their own experiences. If you have never met a salesman you liked or trusted, and someone says the word "salesmen," you instantly have mentally evaluated your opinion of that person. I can't see this many people in the world ever being without a pre-judgement of any thing or person. If someone says "Hey, I just bought a Schon cue." What's the first thing that pops into your head? Only the things you know about Schon cues. To some, they think "awesome, let's check it out." To others, "another mass produced cue." You can only go with what experience you have. So, it isn't really rascist, or prejudging. If you are Latino and only been surrounded by white people, you'd assimilate into their culture. Same if you were white and grew up in an all Hindu society. It's all we know. There would be no rascism if we all were integrated at an equal level. And, that will never happen. So, tolerance is the key. You describe me as the "bald guy." Why should I be offended? Live and let live.

yobagua,

Political correctness, racism, no rage? Truthfulness?
perhaps you would address the choice you made with your screen name. "Hey, white devil".

Are you an idiot? Its Okinawan dialect and means "little water buffalo" which is an analogy to the American Underdog.

Oh I see one of your cantonese speaking friends have told you its Yo. Bok Gwai! Now that means Hey White Devil. But mine isnt!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!

crawfish, in your list of "races", ie; white, black, Hispanic, and Indian, you include a religion. One can be many different colors, black (etheopian), Asian, Latin (argentinian) and white, and still be Jewish. Interesting how a religion would be singled out when describing ones ethnicty, when judiasm is nothing more than a belief.

Hey Randy did you know the number 10 in Japanese is Ju? Would you make some mistake when a Japanese is counting to ten that he is talking about someone's religion?

You did not ask me the meaning of my name. You said it meant Yo white devil. No question was asked. Only an accusation. Oh what little knowledge can do.
And why would you not be surprised. Have I offended you in the past. I did not call you an idiot. I asked if you were one.

Indeed, I made an inquiry. You addressed my concern. No, I'm not embarrassed. We are done now.

As Ive said in previous posts I have a lot of respect for you. I dont know why your feathers are so ruffled. But you make the decision "we're done now"? What is that "last word syndrome." OK no sweat. I guess when I see you at Les Bernadins or Per Se I'll have to look the other way.

This subject of 'race' does indeed often cause a lot of confusion concerning its definition. The error by Crawfish was one of the more easily avoided ones but in this response to him Rg has equally innocently made the mistake of defining "Asian" as a 'colour'........ Asians, like Jews, of course come in all skin colours from white through various shades of brown to a very distinct black, some even have a yellowish tinge;) :)

You know memikey in the 50's when I worked in Hollyood sound stages they had a makeup made by Max Factor that all the make up people used.It was called "Oriental Yellow". It would make people look bright yellow. Of course they were using it in that time on whites portraying Asians. But when they started putting it on Asians and realized it didnt match their skin tone. That Asians were'nt the color yellow they started to develop a new color which was just a little darker than what is regularly used for caucasians. Now of course everything is more realistic. Then everything was black and white. But when color came in and Panavision. It looked pretty ridiculous with all these people walking around in a Chinatown scene painted bright yellow! LOL!!!!!

And, why do they call them the Yellow Pages ? Couldn't they just be called the 'commercial pages' or the 'business information pages' ?

I am basically saying this. When anyone uses a word, whatever it is, the reader or receiver of the word applies the meaning. That is the basis of communication. So, isn't the receiver the one that is showing a preconceived notion? I have a lot of black friends that call eachother "nigga." If I were to try and use it, that's rascist. It's all about context. Hey, do I get offended when someone says, "it was that white bald guy."? It's all about the intention, and the connotation from the receiver.

Another view is reverse discrimination. How can there be a Miss Black America? If there was a Miss White America, would anyone be upset? I just don't get it all. It seems that people spend way too much time worrying and stressing. As Rodney says, "Can't we all just get along?" You don't have to be my best friend, I don't have to be yours. But, I do try and show respect and common courtesy to all people.

:D :D Don't suppose a remake of The Black and White Minstrel Show would get past the planning stage in tinsel town now either:)

have to disagree

Some words are racist regardless of who says them. These words are in a totally different category. However it is "OK" for some to use these words and not others. Then we are back to what is in the eye of the beholder or ear of the listener. This is a garbage position that most of us are guilty of sometimes.

WOP is an ugly word all of the time even though it originally was just short for WithOut Papers. Depending on the context someone uses it in I may laugh or test to see how many front teeth I can remove with one shot.

Billy Connolly reckons that Scottish people have skin that is a kind of very insipidly pale blue. Weather is so bad there that he says it takes the Scots three weeks in the sun on overseas holidays just to turn white:p :)

Actually there has been much discussion of that in my workcenter. Wikipedia defines a Jew as "a member of the Jewish people, an ethnic group originating in the Israelites of the ancient Middle East." It DOES describe someone's ethnicity and not just a religion.
