Pool -- a very male dominated sport (in the wake of Cubc and OMGWTF's matchup)

Well of course you are leaving out Norway. No doubt everything would be perfect there.
I guess I have to go back and read the whole thread because I don't know what you are talking about. I quoted from early in the thread. The funny thing is that I have a beautiful wife and 2 wonderful children and I am not about to hit on anybody no matter who it is, but when I watched that match I wanted to tell that girl that I thought she played a great match and that I admired the way she approached the game but I didn't because she was maybe 22, 23 years old and quite attractive so I didn't want to come off like I was trying to hit on her or something. I guess I was being defensive too. If you post here I think you play a great game, whoever you were!

Peer since you have come here and made remarks about my country, America, let me ask you about yours. From my limited experience why is it the players from your region like Mika, Marcus, Niels, et al. seem so cold and not open sociable. Now this is just my own prejudiced observations but I have met pros from all over the world and find the players from the Nordic countries just plain unfriendly. Maybe its me. Ill accept that. Now maybe its the weather or the isolation but Britain is a cold country but you wont find warmer nicer guys than Karl Boyes, Darren Applelton, Marc Selby, Jimmy White, etc.

I can understand the players from the tropics like the Phillipines and Hawaii. We like to touch people and engage them in song, dance, and feast. And the players from Latin and Central America the same.
Maybe you can illuminate on the subject for me. Mysogony and racism and sexism lives in everyones soul on this planet. If we say that it exist in our society and deny it being in ourselves we become cold and unfeeling.
Mysogony, racism, sexism, and chauvinism exists in everyone and we have to come to terms with it and deal with it out in the open. Listen to any blues or rock song. A lot of it is about someones fine ass or capturing somebodys heart and possesing it. If we had to worry about statistics and peer pressure to abstain how could we enjoy life itself?
I dont think your culture is more progressive than mine. Maybe mine is more out in the open?
Sorry bud, I know Mika and he is a nice guy, maybe a little intense but there isn't a bad bone in his body, also I played Neils in a midnight tornament at Valley Forge a few years ago and when I had him 10-8 in a race to 11 he never showed me anything but the utmost respect and who the hell am I to him! (he did beat me 11-10). Try to get to know these people a little more before judging them.

First I said from my prejudiced point of view. I was leading up to first impressions. And Buddy I have met these guys and they seem cold to me. On first impressions. They might be great people once you get to know them but so might Cubc which people are judging all over the place. People have their opinions. Playing them in a tournament isnt knowing them either. I know of Mika when he has come in acting like he doesnt know anything about one pocket and making sucker games with my friends when there was an Accustats tape of him beating Richie Richeson in one hole. Yeah I think he was a jerk for doing that. But so what! When someone comes on here from a foreign country and make assumptions that has to be answered by those that actually have lived here. We all have assumptions and prejudices. Get to know me before you judge me, Bud.

Little Nasty Napoleon (Marcus Chamat) came to Metairie, LA once upong a time and made out like he couldn't play one pocket, (I didn't know who he was) said some smart ass comment to get me to play, playing me even - winning a set for three hundred, then gave me 8-7 and robbed me for another three hundred, then gave me 9-7 and stuck me for another 300 then wouldn't give any more weight after that. He could have given me 11-7 and robbed me but he was a punk-ass about it all and I have no respect for him.

On the other hand, Neils came through town and gave me the 6 ball for a two hundred dollar set. I had him 7-5 in a race to 9 and he beat me 9-7 like he was walking in the park. Neils was a little stand offish but I think it was because of the language barrier but I could be wrong about him too. I tease him about coming back to New Orleans when I see him. Neils has my respect for the way he handled himself. Marcus can shrink another inch for all I care. :D

I've lost plenty of times and I don't mind losing as long as the guy isn't an ass. I've lost plenty of money to Scotty Townsend getting the orange ball but I've won occasionally too. If I lose to Scotty, I have to smile at him because he doesn't do anything to shark you or to make you play except give you a good game you have a chance to win at, or lose.

I am friends with both Marcus and Niels, and unfortunately your impression is correct. Marcus will do anything to get a game, while Niels is always professional and will never do a hustle move.

You will never hear Niels say to someone that he doesn't know how to play one-pocket. He will tell his speed, and try to put up the correct handicap, and he will always play his best. Niels is class act.

Marcus will play only good enough to win, so he can get more games with an unfair handicap.

During European Championships 2 years ago, Marcus was hitting me with comments all the time, trying to get a game in one-pocket. I had just fun with him, and hit him and Imran with lots of comments back. No game happened.

I have bet with Marcus in one-pocket once, and played a couple of hours with him 8-7, won some and lost some more, and lost in total 75 $.

When you are talking to Marcus when he is not trying to get a game, he is one of the funniest and nicest person on earth, to everyone.

Yeah, if we buy it in Norway we will blow our salary in few hours... You will not believe the prices on beer here in Norway, so I will not tell you.

Anyway, Norwegians (Scandinavians) are weird people. Most of us seem to be afraid of talking to other people, but as soon as we have got a little alcohol, we can't talk enough to them. And we never know when to stop drinking. (I think it is because we don't want to remember that we were talking to strangers the day before).

So if you meet a Scandinavian make sure to only talk to him when he has had 1 beer, and make sure to leave before he has finished the third beer. Then you will have a good time ;) Just a friendly advice :D

Well, I'm somewhat hesitant to stir the pot again, but here's another rhetorical question: How often do you hear an American going off on how the U.S. and its people are fukked up, just as Roy did about his (our) people..? (and the funny part is that what he says is all so true -- I'm in tears here ;^)

Besides, I don't know if people have noticed that both Roy and I aren't afraid of using our real names -- which might also touch into that "privacy" complex among the 'mericans that I alluded to earlier... no? To me, though, the insecurity level among many here in the States is quite staggering, who often seem deprived of self-ironic humor, (well, except for guys like Cuebacca, perhaps). Lacking that confidence might also fuel this macho behavior when dealing with the "weaker sex" at the pool halls, etc.

P.S. Both Roy and I happen to come from a very rustic island community out in a fjord-arm of Norway -- in fact, I thought I came from the coolest place on earth until I discovered that the island that Roy's from is even more rustic than ours, and is even smaller and less populated -- probably just in the hundreds..? I've been there only once: http://gallery.photo.net/photo/3693834-lg.jpg
And here's where I'm from, just a few miles from Roy's: http://ccrma.stanford.edu/~peer/norwayLanda.html

I think you should read some books about American history before you start spouting off about what and how we are. As far as commenting on our own country have you ever heard of the Anti war Protest Movement and the fight for Racial Equality. I think most Americans were talking about how f...d up our society was and fought to make it better. Have you ever heard of the womens movement led by people like Betty Freidan or Gloria Steinem. Maybe youve heard of the Suffragette movement. Maybe you know about Joe Hill, a SWEDISH American who helped form the modern labor union and fight for workers rights. Americans have always told it like it is from the revolt against the British only we do something about it to make this country better. We dont have the lack of self confidence that you claim we have only maybe too much of confidence. We are fighters not pacifists. We constantly fight for change. So Ill say what Dylan the American songwriter said once-"If you dont underestimate me, I wont underestimate you"

Although I might be a bit more educated than the average person, I'm sure you, "yobagua", know more about American history than I, (yet, I'm currently working on some stuff related to the old frontiers). However, my comment wasn't in regards to American historical figures and their achievements, but more about the current mindset of the people here, the forum members who so avidly protested and felt "insulted" when I said; "When I initially saw Cubc going off on OMGWTF, to me it just revived this not-often-talked-about misogynistic and racist mindset which I think is quite prevalent here in the states."

So, to rehash my question from my last post; how often do we see someone here on AzB going off on how his/her fellow Americans are fukked up, just as Roy Steffensen did about us Norwegians, and how often do we see that those who speak the loudest about "love it or leave it" are also prone to hide behind phony usernames..?

If you read my last post in that light, you might understand what I'm alluding to. Perhaps you'll also realize that, to me, the most insecure people are the ego-blown fighters who act according to their misogynic & racist mindset, (sorry that I use those words again).

You, hesitant to stir the pot? Perish the thought.

So now you bash Americans for supposedly having a ""privacy" complex".

Pal, you Eurotypes gave up any semblance of privacy eons ago. The terrible thing is you don't seem to realize what you lost, much like someone who has lost their innocence and then revels in that.

Plus, calling our cherished constitutional rights some sort of supposed "complex" as if it's a mental disorder deserving to be in the DSM-IV is offensive, not only to me, but to many others as well, I'm sure.

Have a nice day enjoying your stay in this beautiful country, as Michael Medved when signing off his talk-radio program says, "this greatest country on God's green earth."

Well, lets then quote another nugget by Mickey M:

"The idea of a distinctive, unifying, risk-taking American DNA might also help to explain our most persistent and painful racial divide - between the progeny of every immigrant nationality that chose to come here, and the one significant group that exercised no choice in making their journey to the U.S. Nothing in the horrific ordeal of African slaves, seized from their homes against their will, reflected a genetic predisposition to risk-taking, or any sort of self-selection based on personality traits."

As I said, to me all this revive this not-often-talked-about racist mindset which I think is quite prevalent here in the states.

Sometimes you meet people and perceive them incorrectly because all cannot be learned in a first meeting but I'm glad you confirmed my observation and am glad that I am not just a sore loser. ;)

Because of Marcus's deception and despicable manner in my encounter with him, I don't think I will be able to let him show me how nice of a guy he can be when he's not trying to get a game, unfortunately.

Now I know I need weight from you too Roy. :D :D Just wait until I meet you at the DCC. ;)

I believe I know who you are referring to. Her name is Emily Duddy. You can find pictures of the event at William Fuentes' website. I've attached a link. Great up and coming player. Plays so sooo much confidence. She was on my Vegas team, Kiss of Death! :) Moved here about a year ago from Cally. I'll forward your compliments to her if it's her!

That's her, it's always fun to watch players like that because they don't care who they are playing, they just go after it. I was the guy who lost 9-8 to Korsiak in the first round. Blew a 6-1 lead!

Peer, you are in my prayers.

Just wondering, there are college courses these days that teach that to be white necessarily means one is racist. Do you subscribe to that theory?

Joey plays jam up pool!!! Don't feel that you blew the lead. Someone of Joey's level can easily run racks and beat a deficit. Glad you could make it out to play. I was the blonde signing everyone up! :)

Will you be making it to anymore events?
