This is a glimpse into the past that shows the difference in speed between simonis and wool cloth. Look how fast the que ball stops on this table. Also , look at Earl's runout in the second rack. He has one of the best strokes in pool, and look how hard he has to hit theses balls to move the cueball ( Donnie....you sure you could have beat theses guy's then? ).
Ahh, the old days....when soon to be old guys made fun of already old guys...not knowing how hard it was going to be just getting to be old....lol.

I had not seen that one before. I have bookmarked it, so I can watch it later. I have a job I must get out this morning.

I did see the first few minutes. This is vintage pool at its finest. Thanks for sharing!

miss the old cloth

The slower cloth made the cue ball a lot easier to control, or so it seems to me. Stumbled onto some old bar tables that had been in storage since the 1980's, about the same time I quit pool. That remains one of the best sessions I have had since I picked up a stick again.

I don't want to roll back the clock 30-40 years but I do think that the sport has gotten carried away with the fast cloth. I like slow cloth. Don't have a problem with cloth "grain" affecting roll either, makes things more interesting and helps the better player. Maybe the ABP needs to add putting cloth on the tables instead of onion skin to their demands!

Almost forgot, wonderful old video from when Earl had hair and Buddy had feet!

Hu

That's the kind of table I need to play on...one where you gotta mash shit around the table.
I am lost on fast tables with boingy rails.

You know, I just don't see where the Onion Skin has improved or helped the game at all. Why is slick and fast better??
i know they say it makes things easier!! Well it ain't supposed to be easy!!

It's easier to travel around the table, especially with centerball. I personally don't like it at all. Instead of benefitting the better player, it tends to equal things out. You don't need a great stroke to get around the table anymore.

Having played for 50 years first on slow cloth with the old clay balls then with modern balls and now on the fast cloth my take is that you can do more with the cue ball now then back then. Does it make the game easier yes I think so. But thats what we have now.

Today's cloth is a great equalizer.

I prefer slow cloth.

Probably because, I have never seen a shot that I didn't want to hit hard. :D

Fast cloth gives you more options....so it has to favor the better player.

I doubt if anyone in this thread has played on slower cloth than me.....
....42 oz. is brutal....lotta shots that the world champion or a short-stop
have to play the same way....on a fast cloth, the champion can show
his superior game.

..and I played on lots of fast cloth in the 60's and 70's....
The Rack in Detroit when Gil Elias owned it had cloth at least as fast as
Simonis 760, which is about 20 oz.

I played very little bar box because of dumb rules and horse-blanket cloth.

Every serious player should play some 3-cushion to understand the beauty
of fast cloth.

Hi PT
If you played on fast cloth in the 60's and 70's you probably played on billiard cloth. I also played on some tables around the country that had fast cloth. Most of it was billiard cloth. It's great for billiards, not soo great for pool. Of course , now there are many rooms that have fairly slow cloth because of poor table mechanics and/ or using the cheaper simonis. Most room owners dont care about pool here, just the bar....too bad.
