Pool hall junkies

I couldn't get past Ricky Schroeder's graphite cue and shooting.
Rod Steiger still regrets making this his last movie.

What we are seeing is Pool Hall Junkies can now be considered a cult film in the billiards world. I see the movie poster t shirts all the time in pool halls.

The problem with the Color Of Money is they savagely cut out the heart & soul of Walter Tevis' novel by the same name. They rewrote the story to center around Tom Crusie and inspite of the movie not being horrible, it's nowhere close to the masterpiece it could've been. I thought crusie sucked in it, btw.

Pool Hall Junkies was a fun movie. It wasn't ever meant to be a serious drama, so if that's what people went in expecting they couldn't help, but be disappointed. I found it more to be a celebration of Pool, espcially Pool cliches and had no problem bordering on making fun of them a little bit. To me it's a movie that doesn't take itself too seriously and in fact is happy to leverage that and play around with it. Chazz Palminteri is an excellent actor, so if it appeared he was way over acting his part, that was by design, not an off day. Marrs Calahan nailed the role and reminded me of 1 NYC Hustler I know to the point I wonder to this day if he knew him (New Rochelle Johnny, aka Johnny B).

You really don't know what an unwatchable Pool movie is until you've tried to watch either:

"Virgin Pockets" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIutVllgDiM

or

"Kiss Shot" (w/ Whoopi Goldberg) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOmwQRM71Mk.

They make COM & PHJ look like a lock for the best picture Oscar.

That is one of my favorite movies and now I am going to have to cue it up and watch it again.:thumbup:

Have you ever checked out Pakners, Baltimore Bullet, 9-Ball The Movie, or the TV show The Hustlers?

Baltimore Bullet wasn't to bad. There were a lot cameos of good players in that.

I know it is fashionable to loathe Pool Hall Junkies but I don't think it is that bad!:)

They are both TERRIBLE!!! Baltimore Bullet was cheesy and lame. Cameos are not really going to save a bad movie, and bad it was.

What do you mean "fashionable" to hate Poolhall junkies? I can't even imagine who would like it. Even Christopher Walken can't save this bs movie. The lead actor is a complete joke, the plot is lame, the pool is even bad! I mean being "likeable" is something that many think is important for the main character in a hero story like this to be. Well, after looking at the main characters stupid face and listened to his awful line delivery the only emotion I had was a near uncontrollable urge to punch him over and over. I mean, they actually had a decent budget, they had some actors that were half decent (except the lead) and one great one, but that was all for nothing.

Have you ever been dragged to a movie by a girl and then completely lost respect for her for actually liking it? "Fifty shades of Grey" cough, cough...If you took a girl to see "Poolhall junkies" there is a good chance she'd leave you or at least force you to quit pool. Not because of the shadyness but the pure stink of lameness this movie has stained it with.

Lmao, I just was able to watch the virgin pockets trailer. Omg, that is the worst...I can hardly even say it...acting.

I can't think of a more appropriate use of the saying, "some things are better left to the professionals".

Wow.

Was that filmed w a cell phone?

The ONLY pool movie is The Hustler. The Color of Money has some nice shots but its poor movie. Definitely not as bad as Pool Hall Junkies. So 1. Hustler and a far 2. Color of Money

Actually Pool Hall Junkies is quite entertaining, I consider it my 3rd favorite Pool movie after the Hustler (1st favorite) and The Color of Money (2nd favorite).
Not easy to produce a good movie of this kind.

Really its not even up for debate. The Color of Money is a 1984 novel by American novelist Walter Tevis. It is the sequel to his 1959 novel, The Hustler.
The color of money was one of the best movies ever made...not only a pool movie. It won academy awards...it transcended just the pool genre. It's scenes are debated to this day. It was the reason for the resurgence of pool in the 90's. The actors, the score, the scenes...It was a cinematic masterpiece. It was directed by Martin Scorsese...the director of taxi driver, raging bull, and goodfellas...arguably the best mob movie ever made...which apparently he got the idea from doing the color of money.

Mars Callahan was the director, screenwriter, and actor in Pool hall junkies...he played the character "Johnny". It's not even worthy of a comparison. It was a low budget effort that probably just went straight to video...atleast I don't even remember hearing about it.

Best Movie Ever?! Better than "The Hustler?

The Movie "won" NO Awards. Paul Newman won for Best Actor.

The pool scenes are debated as being laughable, the story gutted the book, the plot was predictable.

The resurgence of pool in the late 80's was due to the publishing of "A Beginner's Guide to Playing 8 Ball" by Poolkillers Not TCOM!

Masterpiece?

Brags, you are too transparent as a Troll.

You ACTUALLY believe that book started a pool resurgence? You need to step away from the pipe before it burns your lips. I was playing a LOT in the 1980-86 timeframe. Pool was doing ok with a lot of tournaments and good action(pre-casino days). When CoM came out pool went NUTS. Hell, in the Tulsa area alone we had something like 4-5 cuemakers start up. I don't know 3 people who have ever heard of much less seen this book you keep talking about. CoM wasn't even close to the Hustler but it DID kick-start pool nationwide.

I beat Mars, the main actor in the movie. He ran the rack on me and then scratched the 8 ball. Guy has the softest handshake of any human being I have ever met.

Color of money was a good reason to pop popcorn and enjoy something for a couple hours, Cruise and Newman were good enough to be good for pool world... The Hustler is and always will be 1000 x better movie than Color of Money and Poolhall Junkies combined.

I know the guy that owns the 8 footer from the PJ's.. he's looking to sell it, if anyone is interested pm me. I bought a 9 off him instead once I figured out it would fit ok.

While the PJ's the movie didn't do well, it certainly had it's run through the theatres, definitely did not go straight to video.

Now, the color of money is a great movie. You don't even need to be into pool to enjoy it

Your say that some people out there are not into pool?
I've never heard of such a thing.
How could anyone not like pool especially with all of the cool pool cues, cases, tip tools and shit.
I think some people need to get a life.

Not into pool...I'll be damned
