Pool & Lifting competing loves

Pool is like your wife finding about about your affair with Lifting.

Heavy dumbell presses, flyes, tricep push downs, curls, & deadlifts negatively impact pool for at least 48 hours.

Is anybody else involved in this love triangle?

If it impacts on your pool for 48 hours, you are probably doing too much. I play in tournaments twice a week in the evening after weight training in the morning. I'm also 57Y/O.

Lifting weights

I try not to lift weights within a few hours of competing. I'm 45, so I'm not killing myself to be the next Schwartzenegger.

There are many players that are in good shape but not built. Muscles in pool are supposed to be free and loose not hard and tight. IMHO.

there was a reason they didn't call him Minnesota Buff.
Maybe he was on to something . . .
Why would you do anything that negatively effects your game for 48 hours ?
Staring into the Sun for 15 minutes will 'negatively effect your game for 48 hours' , so , do you do that ?
so if you work out Sunday night , you can't play Monday or Tuesday .
Workout again on Wednesday night , you can't play Thursday or Friday.
You can shoot pool on Saturday .
Then you work out on Sunday . . . start over . . .
Sorry , Berlowmj2 , but this fitness stuff has got to go !
Have you thought about swimming ?

while i totally agree with you that lifting kills a pool game there are examples of this being done successfully. Donnie Mills was in the gym supersetting and working out heavy chest and back on Friday. Then he woke up on Sat and Sun and proceeded to win a Seminole event, including beating Archer twice.

oh and yeah I just love working out, the feeling you get when you start getting into that gym groove is as good as running a rack of pool. I had to stop in March bc I got sick with the worst flu of my life and then I had surgery in May. im skinny to begin with and i lost 20lbs but now im back in the gym again, destroying my pool game. At least ive gained 7lbs back even if I cant run a rack of nineball anymore.

I used to be in competitive powerlifting and I can say that without a doubt it effects your game. Working out the day before never effected me, but lifting that day certainly did. The biggest drawback wasn't lifting, but the size I attained from lifting. This effected my stroke big time. Having 21 inch biceps and 18 inch forearms will certainly effect the range of your stroke.

Since quitting working out I actually feel a lot better. The bad side is that I lost about 60 pounds of mostly muscle, but I am still very healthy at 185lbs now. The good side is that I don't have the aches and pains associated with benching 500lbs once a week along with the other very heavy lifting I would do. I also don't sweat nearly as much at work anymore during the summer since I am not carrying all the extra weight on my frame and I am not nearly as worn out from doing that and fitting in work out time while working a 60 hour work week as I worked out 7 days on and one day off.

I do find it funny that I have a love for activities that will never make me a millionaire like baseball, football or basketball.

I've spent countless hours playing pool, working out competitively, playing softball and skiing.

Those exercises should not negatively effect your game for more than 6 hours. I can say that if you have serious weakness for a period longer than that you have either just started training, you are seriously overtrained or you only really push yourself doing those exercises....meaning you are still out of shape and need more conditioning.

Look I understand that it would affect your game within half days time after....

but if your working out and having problems the next day with muscle tension and such.....

YOU DON'T STRETCH WORTH A DAM!!! YOU WILL GET INJURED!!!

Or your using too much weight.....weight should only be increased by about 10% a month at most....that way you won't over exert your strength and pull or tear something.

None of the major sports you mentioned will make millionaires except for a select few people. Only the top guys get paid millions, and the average career is only 4 years long before injury ends it.

I disagree. I don't think it disturbs my game but then I don't lift heavy.

If you are pushing yourself to the point where you can barely lift a pencil afterwards, then I can see it bothering your game.

Perhaps Donnie Mills will weigh in here (pun intended). I remember hearing him talk about this before. He said if anything he thought lifting *helped* his pool game, giving him better physical form and better physical endurance. Your brain feeds off the energy produced by your body...better body provides the conditions for the brain to produce a better mind. Perhaps it depends on how hardcore you are lifting and when.

There is no question about the LONG term contributions of lifting, aerobics, & stretching to pool.

Despite the fact that I took up the game very late in life, (age 67) I can put in long hours without any back problems, stamina is not an issue, readily achieve power on the break without sacrificing control, speed control progressing...

My assessment might be confounded by the fact that my stroke is not completely hardwired, so occasionally my conscious mind interferes.

I am not saying that I am disabled after a workout or unable to play.

However, it is interesting to note that many of you have overcome the traditional issues associated with lifting such as working to exhaustion & delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).

I'm an avid weight lifter- been doing so for the past 20 years or so. It can only positively impact your pool game.

There appears to be consensus on the positive contribution of lifting & other conditioning exercises on pool-long term.

The disagreement appears to be on whether or not heavy work sets &/or multiple high rep sets to failure hours or a day before playing might negatively impact your performance.

I think training styles, genetics, diet and other factors are something to take into consideration. Typically, I'll use westside barbell style training. If i'm doing high volume with heavy weight,it takes awhile for me to feel "normal" again. I notice the taxation from my CNS though. Between that and a rush of endorphins i'm generally useless for awhile after training. Kinda "foggy",and not the best at focusing. It's not really as physical as it is mental for me.

If you are training for specifically sarcoplasmic hypertrophy I could definitely see issues if you pulled out ur cue right afterwards. A lot of that is probably up the 1.the individual,2. the workout. For me it would depend on how much time is in between being finished and starting to play pool.

My pool table is inside my gym.Playing nine ball with muscles full of blood and oxygen is not one of my strengths.
