Pool Phrase that needs to go!

I cannot believe people on this forum still say, "you don't have to like it" or "he doesn't have to like it". I heard this phrase like 15 years ago. Lake Superior State University comes out with an annual list of words and phrases that need to go from the previous year, words like go green and bailout and "it is what it is". The "don't have to like it" phrase has to be played out, for real. I like, "you can bet as high as a giraffe's ass", now that's cool. Please, stop saying woofing terms from the 1990's.

I have heard this phrase my self many times but not enough to bother me .

Not pool related, but interesting.

If everything trite was also obsolete, the word "trite" wouldn't be needed in the English language. Evolution of trite lanaguage toward obsolescence is, by no means, guaranteed, but, when it does occur, tends to be quite slow.

lol i actually love this phrase and it's something i'd never heard before I got into pool.

a similar one is in regards to a specific shot - "he doesn't HAVE to make this ball".

How about the 70's & 80's?

If I heard it in the 90's, its fairly new to me.

Who says it's from the 90's? I am pretty sure it's been around much longer than that.

At least we don't still say "It's George" or "It's Pete".

I happen to think that pool terms can stay around forever - it's our language.

Why would you only want to bet as high as a giraffe's ass? Grow some heart and bet the farm. Don't be a nit just cuz you don't have to like it, you might outrun the nuts. Remember though that I might give you what you want but I'll never give you what you need.

I've heard "It's Tom" but not "It's Pete". What is so bad about Pete I wonder?

D<-- holds nothing against guys named Pete but keeps an eye on Toms.

LOL - I "knew" I was gonna get it wrong. Those two were before my time, or I just never "got it" when people were saying "It's George" to each other right before they played me.

:-)

Now that's funny!

The one pool line I always hated was when you missed a tough shot and the guy says "nice try," like he really means it. Sure but would you say "nice try" if I made it. It's never a "nice try" if you make the ball, only when you miss.

When a guy keeps saying that to me, the next time I make a good shot I'll look at him and ask him if he thought that was a "nice try" as well.
