R.A Dyer has an excellent book called The Hustler and the Champ which covers Willie Mosconi and Minnesota Fats, and the events leading to the Great American Shootout. It would make excellent reference material for a screenplay. They can cover Mosconi's early years touring with Ralph Greenleaf, picking up a cue to win $75 to support his family, filming of the Hustler, and being a rep for Brunswick. They could cover how Minnesota Fats, jumped on the the success Newman/Gleason movie "The Hustler', and parlayed it into a celebrity image.

While Danny Basovich is waiting the movie on his life to be made, he could play Jackie Gleason in the Hustler. Gleason could play pool, while Newman had to take lessons from Mosconi to look like a pool player. Jennifer Barretta could stand in for Piper Laurie; Fast Eddie's girlfriend character in the film.

How 'bout Ralph Greenleaf? Obviously a great player and an interesting and colorful character.

I would never in a MILLION YEARS want to watch a remake of THE HUSTLER!

Tho I love Danny and he is extremely charasmatic he aint no Jackie Gleason....more important than that is the fact that NO ONE can play Paul Newman as Fast Eddie....it just aint happening and it would be blasphemy anyways.

If they remade that they might as well let M. Night Shalaman direct it.....he makes good horror movies and that idea sounds horrible as they come.

Too bad Newman is dead b/c Tom Cruise sucks my bawls in TCOM

Scotty Townsend has enough stories of his life endeavors to make a interesting movie plus maybe even a sequel:smile:

If I was a movie producer I would put the money on Alex. You could barely edit his life into 2.5 hours or so.

-Getting beat up and picked on as a child because he was so small.
-Run out of the Philipines to Toronto for winning too much as a 13 yr old from a street gang.
-Best player in Canada as a teenager, and laughing all the way to the casinos and blowing everyone else's money
-Going thru the US with Ronnie Wiseman offering the best players in town the orange crush at $100 a game.
-Switching to snooker and making it to semis of the Canadian Open.
-Winning a professional one pocket tournament in NYC, when he'd never played the game before. (by now he's about 20)
-Putting all his own money, about 12K, on himself in the 2004 World Championships and winning 150K
-His insistence at playing the best players straight up at their game
(ie battles with John Schmidt at straight pool)
-Compulsive gambling, suing for slander over the sharking incident.
-Streamed matches with SVB.
-Obsession with Poker and cock fighting and constantly clowning around

and that's only some of the stuff I know - who knows what I dont know?
and he's still only 32

Alex's bond with Rafael Cusi aka Popoy - an internationally-acclaimed painter/artist from the Philippines.

Not to make you turn grey as a ghost, its my bad. I thought I wrote that as part of the R.A Dyer movie, they could include when Mosconi was making of the Hustler. I read he gave daily lessons to Paul Newman, whereas Jackie Gleason was already good poolplayer.

There's a term for it, but it escapes me when you portray the making of a movie, within a movie. Think of the audience for HBO, they may not know Mosconi or Fats, but they know Newman. They can fast forward to 1984, making of the Color of Money with Mike Sigel giving Tom Cruise instruction because he can't play, while Newman is adept in pool as Gleason.

If M. Night Shamasomething directed it, it would have a twist ending like Fats was Mosconi's half brother, or something to give a tidy explanation for the resentment and rivalry.

A movie using Tom Cruise as a reference or story tie in to Fast Eddie would get the newbys interested in TCOM as a background......Everyone knows Tom Cruise....love em or hate em....he brings the crowd! then tie in how the Pinoy crew sneaked" over here to assault the U.S......gives it an international theme......and we can show how Kiether and all those road dogs were traveling the country incognito BEFORE the advent of the NET.

Then bring it somehow to the modern times with Alex and the tie in of Poker and you have THAT whole audience ,and you got a big time block buster IMO!

We need to sell the poker thing......to prove how cool the pool thing is, and how they are real similar from a gambling aspect.

So, thats a plumbers take on the next pool movie!

Fats number one, Louie Roberts number two, Keith number three. All three amazing characters with compelling stories. In fact they had interesting stories for every day of their lives. No grass grew under their feet.

I would have to agree on Fats - just read his bio on Wikipedia.
Right on his tombstone:
"Beat every living creature on Earth. 'St. Peter, rack 'em up. – Fats'"
and many other hilarious quotes
but ask Danny Diliberto about him ...for some reason Danny just hated him.
didnt like the way he stole the nickname from the Hustler movie and he insists to this day that there is no Fats just a second tier player named Rudy Wanderone with a big mouth.
In fact he actually got mad at me when I brought him up.

Cicero Murphy. A gritty movie done in black and white of his early years up to his later years. He could not compete in world events until 1965 because of his race...he won a world title on his first attempt... Plenty of story for a movie with some universal appeal as a story of triumph. Other old time greats would be in the movie and if the cast was well chosen, they could be justly done with a good script while not being the main characters. The movie would not be a civil rights preachy movie, but would simply tell his story, what he went through, and how he fit in with the other legends at that time.

My same answer from a previous thread on this subject....

How could anybody not have mentioned Pisboigh, (Pittsburgh) Billy
Incardona? Only the lead. He would be surrounded by all the others mentioned. And he keeps on making stories. And he is somebody young pool players would know of. A natural.

Fats and Danny did not get along. I won't go into all the reasons why, other than to say sometimes Fatty stretched the truth, and the other pool players knew it was just part of his schtick, but Danny found it offensive.

Cornbread Red!!!! I thought the book about Danny Basavich was pretty good, I would def. watch the movie.
