How about this tennis aspect that could easily WORK for pool....Paul Schofield....I bet you will try this.

Use the 24 sec shotclock like Wincardona says +.....

Playing sets, have one person break the first set completely, then the other person breaks the next set, lets say race to 2, 3, 4 or 5 depending on what the tournament director chooses, before event begins, and with a tiebreaker like tennis. Best 2 out of three, or three out of five or 4 out of seven. You could do it dbl elim or single elimination.

Now this could work.

You rack completely for your opponents set, then the next set your opponent racks for YOUR SET, ALTERNATE SETS, ALTERNATE BREAKER & RACKER.

If it goes Hill/Hill:
Tiebreaker, just like tennis, one player breaks first, next up has two breaks, then next up has two breaks, win by two or first player to 11, if it goes ten/ten then lag for last break.
CoooooooooooooooooooL

I'm going to name this ''Colorado Express'' it's the second generation of Texas Express, RIP Big John

Wow, no response...................with all the issues of racking, the advantages of winner break and the slowness of alternate breaking at times, one would think this idea might be interesting. Maybe a little too much football yesteday.

This actually seems like a good idea. Interesting format.

Interesting format.. I'd play in a tournament like that!

I think it could be perceived as more fair then a single race to a given number of rotation style games as it would specifically give each player more of a chance than winner or loser breaks. This is a nice variation on an alternating break format. With sets there could be a little momentum build up for each player and that could be exciting to people watching whether or not they know billiards. There could still be shutouts and perfect games played but I think this might make it a lot more challenging to do it There really is something to the idea of giving a player their serve to make the best of or to lose it if they can't keep winning. I also really like the tie-breaker aspect with a two ahead set capping at a race to 11.

It would definitely make the tournament longer especially if it's used in double elimination but if Tennis can broadcast a 4 hour match why can't pool! And we have way more colors of balls for TV then they do!

In the tiebreaker don't forget to switch sides after every 6 games just like tennis :D

<--- Played a lil tennis growing up...kinda miss it.

Nice..I'll bet the tables would wear in a bit more evenly and we could probably get longer use out of the cloths if we switched ends for breaking.

Would make an interesting engineering project to design a dual end ball return table. Could always go the way of a bar table with the balls at the side or stick to drop pockets with a ball boy or ball girl.

The final thing that would add to this would be an official at the table who also racks utilizing something with repeatable accuracy.

The more I think about this the more interesting your original idea is. Hope this gets tried out!

The tiebreaker seems to Add a tremendous amount of time to the length of the match.

Set up a tournament somewhere and try it out. Single elimination. I'll play.

Then shorten the race to, 3 or 5 or 7 or 9, whatever works. If it were a race to 3 and each player had two wins, then make it win by two or first to 5 the next odd number.
Tiebreaker number will evolve to what works best for the game and than venue or programming.

I've always felt like the "winner breaks rule" was adopted from the gambling roots of pool to give the hustlers an advantage.

I agree;

This would then put allot of importance on who wins the first lag and breaks the first set.
Tiebreaker, lag again.

In thinking about you amusing concept, I think your ON to something....

Colorado Express....

In the Finals, play on two tables, side by side or end to end always having the Magic Racked balls ready to go on the other table....
It would move the finals along Nicely,
Plus with two different tables, somewhat respective to tennis, the
audience would have seating that would accomodate more people
closer to the table.
Because the finals or quarter finals would be utilizing two tables, it would make the
sets go by soooooooooooooo much quicker by NOT having to wait and watch balls
being racked.
Thanks for the skewed idea, but it was a good one.

Race to 5 win by two, or first player to reach 7 seven wins, wouldn't take very long.

Similar to what they did at the miller lite world series of Tavern pool years ago. I think races to 3, 2 of 3 sets??? Have slept since then.
That in my mind is the greatest pool event ever promoted. I think there were like 2100 in the open 8 Ball!
