Burn all jump cues

Don’t get me wrong, I know that playing the percentages like the pros of today do is the best way to win in the long run. Years ago before there was good kicking, lock up safes, and no jump cues the players went for a lot more low percentage shots making the matches much more exiting (for me anyway). Johnnyt

Sorry for double thread here.

1996 Pro Tour Archer vs Efren Hill-Hill game on the loser's side, lots of safeties, yet was very exiting. At the end the crowd gave them a standing ovation.

The game was more interesting back in the day because most players were playing 14.1 and one pocket, the two most interesting and sklillful games.

There was far more room for creativity and imagination in those games than in rotational pool games.

The only things I find interesting about rotational pool today are the defense, the two-way shots and the extensive requirement for and use of billiard knowledge in both kicking and position play. They make rotational pool far more interesting than it used to be in the "two shot shootout" days, but still far less interesting than 14.1 or one pocket.

I don't find difficult shot making to be what makes pool exciting. Nonetheless, the risk/reward element used to be higher in the 14.1 days, because the top players were always a threat to run out the match given any open table. Guys like Lassiter and Caras, known for their willingness to take on very difficult shots in competition, would always wow the crowd.

Yes, I do understand that 14.1 and one pocket are not good TV games, but as they are both played extensively at Derby City, I'll do everything I can to make sure I never miss a Derby City Classic again.

I believe that "rack your own" ten ball, which inevitably comes with rack mechanics and pattern rackers, has brought pool to its least interesting form in my lifetime. Of course, the use of ten foot tables can, to a great extent, eliminate the advantage typically enjoyed by the player racking, as we saw at Derby City this January.

Personally, I think that rotational pool has evolved to the art of the two-way shot and runout, and can be pretty exciting. Played as such, there's some creative opportunity that I enjoy. I like straight pool and play it when I can find someone that will play. I like 10-ball no-count for lots of creativity in straight pool, which also minimizes and refines safety play. And while I can appreciate 1pkt, I really don't enjoy the many drawn out safety battles. Life's too short.

Personally I think jump cues have done more harm than good for pool. It's to easy to jump out of a well exectued safety than it is to kick most of the time..

Jump cues should be banned. They are a curse on the game. I refuse to use one. And yes I'm an old timer. Most of the average players are terrible using them.

I'm a fairly newcommer to the game! I've been playing for 7 yrs now and while I admit that the first few yrs all I played was 8 and 9 ball! The past 2 to 3 yrs I've grown to love 1 pocket and straight pool much more than the others! But I love playing pool! Not just 1 game! I play for the appreciation of the complexity of the game as a whole! I think when I hear who is the best pool player, it shouldn't be 1 game! I think its all of the games! I know an A-player who can give me the last 3 in 9-ball but I play him even straight pool and give him 10-6 1-pocket! But because he plays better 9-ball than me, he's a better player?!?! I don't get it with this game! Most people are so closed minded that it sometimes hurts! I love all the games. Period! That's the true enjoyment! I'll never make it to pro level, but I will always strive to play my best pool! No matter what the game!!!
