Poor calls at WCoP

How does a ref who is paying attention to the match not see things such as this foul hit? The 8-ball was clearly hit before the 4-ball.

I don't have any skin in the game here, but that's a pretty blatant non-call. Can't believe the Thai players didn't raise a complaint.

There was a foul called against Thailand earlier in the match for no apparent reason whatsoever.

Ref was standing in the wrong place to see it.

Correct, the referee was out of position to make the call. I want to be down there close to the point of contact and see the cue ball coming toward me. I see refs make this type of mistake frequently. The regular Matchroom refs (Nigel Rees and the other guy) are two of the best.

Did you see the rack where the 3 was where the 9 should have been?

That was in the Spain match with Poland. I'm pretty sure the Spanish players noticed it, but for a ref to make an elementary mistake like that is unforgivable. I'm surprised no one else in the arena saw it and brought it to the refs attention.

Jay is the ref positioning himself in an effort to keep out of the players line of sight? Actually still seems like he should have seen the 8 ball move.

You guys are being too tough on them. That ball barely moved, the commentators didn’t notice, and probably neither team noticed or someone would have said something. And it’s doubly hard to see with a jump shot because you might be looking to make sure you don’t nick the ball they’re trying to jump over, which is the more common thing to miss with a jump shot.

The notion that the referee must stay out of the players line of sight is a bad one. A referee should stand where he needs to be to see the shot properly! I stood where a player could see me many times and I stood still while they shot. If you can't see the shot how can you make the call?

Once again, if that referee was standing at the other end of the table and watched the cue ball coming toward him he would have seen the hit on the eight ball.

The ref was probably watching the 5 and the 6 which were the balls most likely to be fouled. It is very rare to hit a ball at that speed and not have it travel farther. I think that was a foul that many refs might not catch.

The ref was probably more focused on the intervening ball and the ball next to the cueball than the object ball area.

That was an obvious foul ... the player shooting knew it as well and should have called it on himself.

I agree with Jay as well ... the ref needs to be in the best position possible to see the shot. He obviously was not ....

I have to be honest, I watched this match on youtube and didn't notice the 8 ball move - but I was not fully focused on it either like the ref should be

I myself had to play it at .25 speed to see so I could see how it would have been missed in real time.

Even after people were talking about the foul, I had to watch the clip several times before I figured out where it happened.

Same here, at 0.25 speed its pretty obvious, but at normal speed its really difficult to spot and thats when you know its happened!

I don't think anyone was being dishonest, sometimes fouls can be really hard to spot.
