Posts revisited

I have a question for everyone. Don't you think it is ok if a post gets revisited or the same question asked twice as long as it is someone new wanting an honest answer? I mean so what if someone wants to know which cue shaft is the best, or which one deflects less. So what if they want to know the best type of cloth to put on their table.

I know I am guilty of posting a thread that has already been talked about, but I wanted an honest answer and an up to date answer. I didn't want to dig through 12 or more threads to read them and find out what the people thought that are no longer on here. LOL

Anyway, what I am trying to say is that if someone is new and has an honest question is it ok to post a previous topic?

I mean we all know posters who keep posting the same boring crap, and they same boring mentality, but what if it is someone that is really interested in finding out the answer?

Me, personally, I think you should ask it whenever you want to, especially with the reasoning you just set forth. There are a different group of people on these threads on any given day and so, yea, you very well may get new and fresh responses.

I'm also sure that there will be some who complain and moan and groan about what others post here. It's still hard to take, even though after a while you begin to realize that it's the same small group who are very proud of the fact that they are confrontational. So many neat posters have been run off because to them, the constant hassle was not worth the trade off they received in enjoyment.

95% of the posters here are good people who love pool. The other 5% eventually get whacked out of here. So enjoy yourself and quit worrying because this is your forum also :)

Is Pool A Game Or A SPORT ?

I think someone (new OR old) should ask all 10,000 AZB members their age EVERY SIX MONTHS.

Well, if this were MY Forum, there'd be a snack bar.

Imo

if it has been talked about in the last 6 months, maybe they should search for previous threads first, but I know not many stop to think to do that, or they may not know how to search for what they want.

Blackballed has taken an interesting way of annswering this question. But to me all he has proven is that anyone can be intentionally annoying or funny. iI his immediate revisit to this topic was intended as a joke- well pretty funny but.... New posters appreciate the interaction of asking a question and getting an answer. Thats what a forum is about- interaction and discussion. If you only want information you buy a book.

Very well thought out answer! Thanks for posting it!

I like this, they could put a BEER button right next to the REP button, then I could send Smorgy a beer everytime he says something funny!! :D

I think that if you have a question then post away. If it has been discussed prior and I dont feel like answering it, then I dont click on it. Pretty simple to me. I like to look at questions that are revisted most of the time. Sometimes people change their opinions. Sometimes new people post on the topic.

On a side note, I truly think that some people on this board really need to have a reality check or something. If it is really a problem to skip past a post that has been talked about previously, then you need to take some form of medication. Look at it like this...if old topics are being revisited, that probably means that a current poster wants a new perspective on a topic or we have a brand new member to the forum. Both of these things are positives for the board and for the pool world in general. If we belittle people for asking questions, then we will run people away from the forum and that is not what this place is all about. If we act like jerks on here, we might just inadvertantly run someone out of the pool world.

We should not only act as members of this forum but as ambassadors for new members and for the pool community.

No damn wonder pool has such a bad reputation....looks like we have some real narrow minded folks around here.

It's a matter of degree, imo.

Your post has been up for an hour and it's been viewed by 90 people. If they each took twenty seconds to open it and read it long enough to figure out whether they have any interest, then that's a half hour of other people's time already.

If you posted a well churned over question that wasn't likely to lead to new insights or generate different responses merely because you didn't want to spend five minutes getting yourself up to speed, then there is an ethical problem, imo.

It's like we all have a refrigerator in the next room filled with beer, and we also all have the power to ask someone to walk a mile to get us a beer.

If we use that power just because we're comfortable in our chair and don't want to get up, then.... well you get the idea....

Very well put. I agree whole-heartedly with this.

Man, I could give up beer if I had to walk a mile for it. (or even a block)

I think any threads requiring specific information should not be re-posted. A perfect example of this is, "When is the US Open this year?". This could easily be found via search and the answer is not going to change if you ask it again.

But for questions where new insights could be useful (or at least possible), I would even encourage revisiting older topics. A pool-related example might be "How can I feel less pressure in a tournament?" This is a thread that, clearly, already exists. But what is wrong with posting it again and getting new insight on it (both from new posters as well as old posters who missed it the first time around)?

If a poster finds an old thread with the right topic, I think it is much better to add to that thread rather than start a new one. That allows everyone to easily view what has already been said. If the old thread has seriously wandered off into the weeds, then maybe it's better off unresurrected, but generally, keep the good threads going.

The search function is not all that good on this board. I have used it many times and find it difficult to find topics. One of two things are needed:

1. A better search function with a good set of instructions. This would include a sticky on how to search prior threads by word or topic.

2. An index of repeating threads. Some thing like a sticky FAQ for popular topics.

After that I agree that people should post what they want when they want. It is a simple matter to skip over things that are not of interest.

However, it is also polite to check in on a new thread that appears to be posted by someone new to help them get used to the system. I see many "old timers" do that and it makes me appreciate AZB all the more.

I do think that at times new people could be given the link to an old thread that will get them up to speed. I have been around awhile and I find it difficult to find things. Oh yeah, I already said that:D

A valid and appreciated point, Bob.

When I have trouble finding old threads it's because of the title not being really what the thread is about. I'm guilty of this too and am going to try and do better in case soneone cares to read one of me old posts...or new ones for that matter. Johnnyt
