Production Cues

another pechauer fan here.

jp cues are all really play the same - you are paying for the amount of decoration on the cue, not performance. the cheaper cues hit the same as the expensive ones. the only difference between the pro and jp series is the joint.

my current main and backup cues are pechauers...

Not one vote for Predator? What IS it with Predators and this forum? They sell millions (for one reason only) and this place snubs them.

Why?

I find their names offensive so I would never give them my money. I think civility counts.

Well I guess it is time for someone to say something nice about McDermott.

Although my JOSS is my #1, I have had a McDermott D-Series since the late eighties and it is a strong #2. I will never get rid of either one.

i like the 70's-80's helmstetters. i always come back to them. the shaft wood was always great and the full splices are beautiful.

Just for the record...I think there's a BIG difference between "custom" cues and "customizing" a production cue...the latter does not turn a production into a custom...

As far as my favorites that I STILL own:

Schon SL17 (Will NEVER sell!)
Schon 1993 LTD
Schon R-14 Remake
Schon SLE6
Mezz EC7-D4
McDermott M707

I no longer have any Joss cues, but have in the past...Schon, Joss, Mezz, McDermott - I think they are all great production cues - both in aesthetics as well as playability!

I'm curious...why would one need a backup cue?

Those of us who play tennis carry backup racquets in case:
U break a string
Balls are flying on u so u switch to a higher tension
Balls are short so u switch to lower tension.

But backup cue? I hope these things don't break often. :-O I'm a beginning pool player so I'm just curious. Thx for any info on this.

Oh, and I own a pechauer with a predator 314-2 shaft :)

Seriously? You only own ONE cue???

Maniac (has never had a tip pop off during a match, but he's ready just in case)

FTR, many poolplayers have "backup" cues for several different reasons (not all of which I could think to mention, I'm sure). Maybe they've sent their cue off for work and they need a "backup" for league or weekly tournaments. Maybe they keep one handy in case something happens to their main player (cracked butt/shaft, wrap comes loose, tip pops off, etc.). Maybe they have one in their case for a loaner (to a good friend or teammate). Heck, there's lots of reasons to have a "backup" cue in the case.

If you only have one cue, or you only take one cue to the poolhall, I would think that you are in the minority. You certainly would be in any of the poolhalls that I have regularly frequented.

I've got a half a dozen or so D series McDs, love them, they're fun and cheap to collect. Often the shafts are toast when I buy them but I've got plenty of those too.

True. And often the production makers do customize cues....pick your stain...pick your inlay wood...etc.

JOSS has been doing that a long time. People forget though that they actually do still make custom cues as well. Not many of course, but what custom maker does make many? If you compare them to something like Southwest....well....Southwest's customs seem a lot more like production than the JOSS customs seem like production. At least to me anyway. I am not commenting on the play of the cue nor the quality or value....but by comparison the Southwests seem to have about five or six models yet they are all, without exception, called custom.

As an example of what I mean JoseV's cue is hardly recognizable as a JOSS. It certainly isn't any kind of "pick your stain" cookie cutter customized production cue. Yet, when was the last time you saw a Southwest that didn't look immediately like a Southwest?

McDermott and Viking both offer "customization"....but AFAIK they haven't made custom cues in a long time. Their founders (famous cue makers of course) are long gone from those shops anyway and they are fairly purely production shops.

I know you dig the Shons. Great cues. Not my thing, but great cues.

Thx. That makes sense :)

Like I said. I'm a beginner. I don't even go to pool halls. I only play on my home table. I really want to join a league but the wife isn't crazy about the idea. :( but anywayz, let's not get off topic.

Sorry for the interruption...Thnk u for the education... and plz continue gentlemen.

The only dumb question is the one you don't ask.

We were all beginners at one point.

I sold my spare a few months ago, because I received an offer that I couldn't turn down. 10 mins after concluding the deal, I noticed the shaft and ferrule had split on my main player. I lost both my cues on one day.

Get a spare.

Coming from a tennis player....

I don't have a 'backup' cue. A backup cue IMO would be a second cue identical in every regard to your playing cue. In fact I doubt any pool player actually has one of those. It's nearly impossible for that reason to even have a 'backup' shaft although a second shaft can be reasonably close. Generally a pool player would simply have a second cue or shaft in case you have to be without your player for some reason, some having been mentioned already. Its surely not common , not at all like breaking a string but I have had a tip pop off here and there (particularly before I started doing them myself and one of the reasons I started doing so) and I have cracked the occasional ferule and a joint ring once.

I think the most common reasons to have a second cue are:

Just cuz you can and they are of course , quite pretty :) ,
Work being performed (wrap/tip.etc),
Loaner,
Beater cue (for certain places)
Sentimental attachment to one (refuse to sell),
Upside down on one (Can't sell for market reasons/refuse to take a loss)

That kind of thing.

first purchased cue was action cue for 79.20, purchased on ozone 13mm shaft. better then the sport authority crap, or cheap 2 piece cues that come with tables.

Ten years ago joined the league, noticed people had turned down lathes. Purchased a Viking for 130 from ozone, shaft 12.25. Big improvement over action cue. hit felt nicer, and had much more action with thinner shaft.

5 years ago, borrowed a friends cue with predator z shaft, broke and run.
Week later bought i believe the 5k2 model from seyberts, with moori tip about 550. predator had sick action, but felt control issues on long shots. and at times to much action, hard to control, viking at 12.25 had good action, a little easier to control.

Went back and forth between z2 and viking for a few months, noticed several decent shooters in the league had meucci's, sold predator, and picked up meucci hof-3 with blackdot 12.75mm shaft used on ebay for 200 bucks. big improvement over both viking and predator. but still wanted to believe predator hype, few years ago purchase a z2 shaft for meucci as well new for 280 with moori tip, after a year or decided to go back to mecci black dot.

Few months ago, looked to upgrade once again read and asked around here on az. Many folks said SCHON solid hit!!!

Recently Purchased schon on ebay for 730 with 2 shafts at 12.75 and moori tips. I never knew what that cue hits solid meant, but now I think I do. The thing hits a friggin ton. Very pleased with feel and control. In my quest for excalibur, also purchased shafts for schon, 314-2, ob1, black dot, tuger ultra ld, mezz wd700, think i like the stock maple shafts the best, as they're the only ones that really produce that solid hit feel, also just picked up a Mottey shaft for this, and another shaft im waiting on which could potentially be a tascarella or a bulabushka, or just a shaft for a little fish. More shaft testing is needed. The butt is real heavy, would like to get it weighed. Being that I had 17 new 5/16X14 shafts, I decided to pick up a joss butt, and a Scruggs sneaky pete with the same joint.

Schon #1, Meucci #2, Scruggs SP#3. i think i might actaully prefer schon for 8 and straight, and meucci for 9.

Before I went to first SBE this year and discovered AZ I had 3 Cues. Now I have 10 cues and 8 additional shafts.

I am now poor and cannot afford to play pool.

I'm probably going to be fired from my job, which is where most of my research and surfing is done. AZ Billiards is ruining my life.
