Professionals playing in non professional events

How does everyone feel about professional pool players playing in events that are not professional events? I understand why they do it...for the money. But I personally don't want to play in a tournament where I feel I have zero chance of winning.

if they are open to anyone, you have the choice to play or not play. If so intimidated, save your money and ride the rail.
Besides there isn''t much pro pool anymore anyway!

Do you play in the APA??? Just curious

I always look at possibly playing a couple of champions two cheap sets. That is essentially what it is. Pay a $50 entry, play two $25 races to whatever. If you are determined to get better you will make yourself pick up some good habits or shots from each experience. It's a cheap lesson.

There is also a really blurred line when it comes to "professional" status. If someone did well in one tournament they are deemed a pro in most peoples minds or pro level....maybe they just had a good draw? People that were pros in years past have a reputation of playing great so are they still kicked out of the tournament? It's too hard to tell stuff like that.

I think all of the amateur only and handicapped stuff has hurt pool. Sure there are great turn-outs for events but everyone just tries to stay at the same level instead of getting better. I don't blame them personally...pro pool isn't great.

I'm not in the APA.

I win plenty.

I have no grand delusion of becoming pro.

I am just curious what others think.

I'll take a few cheap lessons from ya Sarah (although, I have actually been goaded into playing 9 ball quite a bit lately, so watch out!!)....but we still have a 1P game to get to :p Hope all is well, Mrs. Klatt

Cheapest possible way to play a pro

Take advantage of this as much as possible.....

Bankshots in Jax, fl used to and prob still does have the strongest weekly tourney in fl.... Not positive though, it might be at Park ave in orange park now....

But it was race to 7 and 5 every sun for 10 bucks.... 1st sun used to be 500 added and 20 entry... Brought my game up tremendously playing neil fujiwara, butch croft, david grossman, ramsey barrett, larry gail, etc....

I've seen huidji, thorsten, corey, earl, gabe, and tommy kennedy there at different occasions....

All of the players listed above were capable of playing perfect pool on you....

Can't beat that for 10 bucks.... Btw, I cashed half the time depending on draw but never placed higher than 4th (lucky draw)....

I try to look at it as a journey, not a destination.

The reality is, that only one person will win any one tournament right?! We all enter with the "desire" to win, but the majority of events we don't win. If we did our names would be Mosconi or SVB.

My goal is to do better than my last event...... regardless of the competition. So if there are Pro's, World Beaters whatever!! I try to play my best, and take something away from the experience that is positive and will benefit me in the long run.

I would also rather say that some Champion knocked me out of the tourney as opposed to saying, someone that couldn't even a hold a cue or make 2 in a row got me!!!

Pro's and Con's

Hey Efrikey - I understand how you feel, have heard that same thing from lots of amateur players. There are a few events in Houston that dont allow pro players and they are great events, but keep in mind that the level of play between a pro and a high level amateur, might not be a big as you think.

Most of the guys that play in the all amateur events also play in the open events and many of them place very high (get in the money). Ernesto just won the US Amateur event, but he aint know chump..., ask any local pro!!

I like your answer the most

Pro's and Con's

Been playing for 20yr's and have beat a lot of guys that play real sporty.., just keep playing and working on your game and you will sneak up on them!

I'm no pro, but when they come to my table, they better be ready to play.

most tourneys the entry fee is around 50 or 60 bucks at the max........ if there is a tourney with a whole bunch of world champions n it n the entry is only 50or 60 bucks n its n driving distants ... im going ...... to those guy and girls pool is a job ........ some1 has to give them a pay check ...... everytime im n a tournament with sum big player n it i wanna draw him first ... bc if i can win that 1 .... ill have no prob with the rest of em

If I go to a tournament, I don't care who's in it. I've played some of the top players, bangers, and everything in between. Playing a champion gauges your game and seasons you to perform at the highest level.

Best,
Mike

I agree completely, and though I would love to play in some 50 or 60 dollar tournaments, in my neck of the woods its a 5 dollar 8-ball, 1 game double elimination, tournament and when I see that "champion" walk through the door, I can't help but smile...here's a guy that can run 200 balls and he's playing here for a 45.00 first place prize. Then I thank God that 20 years ago I saw the writing on the wall and got a good education and a better job!! :)

funny how the people on here who are like, "dont you want to get better" or it's hardly any money" are the ones that are pros trying to clam a couple hundred bucks off of others learning. typical.

I'm sorry but I think you are mistaken here. Bartram and Sarah are two of the nicest pro's you will meet. They aren't trying to clam a couple hundred bucks off others learning. We all have to learn, wether pro or schmo. We all are on the same journey trying to get better.

So I ask, don't you want to get better? I know I do, so I play all types of competition.

I don't want to be complacent and satisfied with my skill level. I always want to get better, So I get in the mud.

The choice is yours.....
