Pulling up in the middle of a set when score is tied

Nitty move...

He should get no action from anybody if this is the case.

I saw a guy do this once when DCC was at Executive West. He was a tush hog type fella and had money on light. They guy he was playing ran a couple racks and he stood up and said.."yall aint trappin me up." Then proceeded to just take money off light and walk out. People were in such shock nobody said a word.

Sucks when moves like this are pulled. It's almost as bad when you blow a significant amount of money to somebody and they agree to play more at another time and then tomorrow never comes. Always leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Well....Dennis or not, if that doesn't fit the definition of a nit, I don't know what does.

Then you don't know what does. IMHO I would not insult a nit by putting something like this in his classification.

I try not to comment on stuff like this, but I will pass along what I saw so try to keep misinformation from running rampant.

Dennis had been down the whole set. At one point trailing 5 or 6 to 1 I believe. At one point early in the set (somewhere between game 4 and 7 I would guess) the balls were being racked (playing rack your own). Dennis walks up and BEATS the 10 ball into the table with the cueball. I am not saying he tapped it, he smacked the 10 pretty hard and several time. Most people would have had quite a few words at this point, but Rob handled it well.

Fast forward to later in the set, I have moved across the room at this point so understand this is what I could see, not what I could hear. Dennis won a rack, and after pocketing the 10 ball started talking to Rob and pointing to the bottom pockets. This is an assumption by me, but I believe he was saying that he did not want the 10 ball to count on the break in the bottom two, or he was talking about the 10 moving to the bottom pockets allowing for a short rack by Rob. That or saying he wanted out because of these reasons. Again I was not close enough to hear what Dennis.

I say this because Rob had already made a 10 on the break in the lower pocket (to which Dennis said nothing and watched him rack the balls) and had also made a combo on the ten in the same pocket.

What ever the reasons, Dennis broke down his cue. Then Rob pulled down the money. Who ever said Dennis took down the money must have never seen him in person, there is NO way he could have reached it up on the light lol.

Some words were exchanged and voices were beginning to get loud. Some of those voices had no money up and had absolutely nothing to do with the set but seemed they felt they should get involved anyway. Rob stayed cool while this was going on, and asked Dennis to step into the hall with him away from the escalating environment so they could talk. Dennis and Rob went into the hallway and came back into the room after a few minutes and coming to some type of agreement.

All I can say is Rob was put into a horrible position and from my view he handled it with a lot of class and respect.

What are your thoughts about two players racing to, say, 15, and when the score is 8-8, one wants to quit because he doesn't like the game anymore?

As long as the game is tied, is it okay to end? If it was an ahead set, then I could maybe understand pulling up if nobody got ahead, but with a race to 15, what do you think if the score is, say, 8 to 8?

Somebody needs a heart transplant. If they tried that with me and it was a big set, they would be buying their way out.

Had a guy want to quit when it was double hill once...on my break. I said no thanks ran out a few, played a lock safe and ran out with BIH. Just $100 set. I don't mind when people whack it and stack it (start over and double the bet), that gets things going the right direction.

For Dennis all I can think is that he was risking his own money, probably didn't have much and got cold feet?? If it were backers money he'd just play and get his percentage if he won and lose nothing if he lost. Break and BIH is a pretty huge spot, considering there are a lot of people that beat the ghost with BIH. I play the ghost at home with BIH and win about 40-50% in a race to 7 and I'm nobody.

Woody

That's some Bush League stuff from one of the world's best players. Disappointing, to say the least.

If the score was 8-8, including a snapped 10 and a short rack by the opponent, then he obviously had the advantage. I'm surprised he didn't think he could beat that spot.

If it were me, he would have had to pay half to get out of the set. Then again, I also would have been getting the 5-out, breaks and BIH ;)

Rob's got the nutzzzz!!

Don't know who Rob is. But do you know how many times anyone he meets is going to hear about the time he got Dennis to buy out of a set with him cuz Dennis couldn't win?? That's worth more than having a story that he beat him!!

Not "ok" unless both involved parties are "ok" with the change and usually both are not.
:frown:

In an ahead set that situation of going back and forth with one party wanting to pull up after hours have passed is what usually prompts "freeze-out" rules on the next session.

If he doesn't like the game anymore and wants to quit, fine, just let the other guy take the money off the light and put it in his pocket. Its a very nitty scenario.

Hi, This is Rob Melrose and I just got back from Tunica and saw this thread and I will tell you exactly what happened so there is NO misunderstanding. Woody has it pretty close to what happened and I was put in a brutal spot with the move Dennis pulled, HOWEVER Dennis had ZERO chance of winning this set. The room is the Action room and when you enter you enter at your own risk. Everyone in there is trying to get the best of the game with everyone else in the room that is just the nature of pool. So here is what happened.
A year or 2 ago I saw Scooter get ball in hand from Dennis playing 9 ball and Dennis lost quite a bit of money. So I was sitting in the Action by the table me and Dennis ended up playing on. He was looking for action so i asked him for 11 to 6 playing one pocket and he said no. Then I remembered Scooter and I figured Dennis wouldn't give up the break and ball in hand again to anyone playing 9 ball but 10 ball because its alot tougher maybe he would go for it. Im about 330 lbs. and I do not look like a pool player so when I asked for the game Dennis jumped on it. If the player can't beat the ghost or come real close to beating it even Dennis has a good chance to win. We agreed on a race to 15 for $ 1000 and we posted the money on the light. He was literally running to get the money from his backers. As soon as we posted the money he had lost it. My only thinking was trying to get 2 sets out of him not 1. I got off to a big lead to make sure to get control and than I decided to change how I was playing the game to give him opportunities at the table. Let me just say playing Dennis this game is the closest you get to actually playing the ghost because he gets out from everywhere. At 8 to 8 Im thinking now that he thinks he can win.. INSTEAD he says I quit its 8 to 8 and I don't like the game and I want my money back!! This from someone who is considered the worlds best gambler and money player in pool.. I couldn't believe it.. MAYBE i could see this happening in some bar somewhere for $ 10 but in ACTION room on a Live Stream with alot of the top pros sitting right there watching and betting on it.. you have to be kidding me. I told Dennis he is not quitting we are finishing the set we posted the money and we are playing the set out.. How many guys do you think Dennis has let out of sets who couldn't win? answer.. ZERO. When he thought i was a duck he couldn't post the money on the light fast enough after the first 6 games he knew he was screwed.. So again he says, " I don't like the game I want my money back".. I said we are finishing the set, you made the bet and we are playing this out. He broke his cue down and put it in his case.. THIS WAS ALL A MOVE on Dennis's part just trying to get me angry and off my game.. I must say that this was the most brutal move I have ever witnessed in pool.. PERIOD. I told him and the entire room for the 3rd time that if he doesn't finish the set he is forfeiting the money and Im taking it down and NOBODY better get near the table.. At this point ALOT of people in the room including his fellow pros were yelling.. he forfeits, that set is over take the money.. He thought his move was cute until I reached up and put the money in my pocket and than he couldn't get his cue back together fast enough.. Only one person in the entire room said something and that was because he had a $ 100 side bet and didn't want to pay off the forfeit. Him and my backer gary got into an argument.. The guy from Detroit was dead in the wrong just like Dennis was.. I knew we were on Live Stream and it was starting to escalate.. I had already offered to let Dennis buy out for $ 500 because he couldn't win.. I decided to pull Dennis outside the room into the hallway and he begged and cried and said he borrowed the money so it was so disgusting that I let him out for $ 150. A total gift.. This from what is considered the best money player and gambler.. what a joke!! ... Then afterwards after its over he has the balls to say.. " you made the game not me. I don't know you.." meanwhile he thought he knew me pretty well when he was running to post the money on the light.. Then comes the absolute kicker.. he has the further balls to say that in his country if you are playing a race and its tied if one player wants to quit he can just take the money down!! YEAH RIGHT I asked Shane, Corey, Ronnie Wiseman, and Scott Frost and they all laughed and said Dennis is full of shit.. None of those guys could believe he pulled that creepy of move. So I guess if Shane and Dennis are playing a race to 21 9 ball for $ 20,000 and the score is tied 20 to 20 and Dennis is breaking if Shane wants to quit its ok? YEAH RIGHT lmfao I knew this was Live Streamed by Big Truck and even though Dennis forfeited that money I could just see this whole thing getting turned around online and people saying some big guy stole Dennis money while Dennis wanted to finish the set.. So I made sure and Big Truck told me that Dennis lost alot of credibility with the people watching. Like Corey and Scott told me and they are right after he pulls that move you can't go back and finish the set because now you have to win the set twice and your angry.. It was just a flat out creepy move by Dennis. He knew he couldn't win the set so by pulling this move he figured he had nothing to lose... Now ask yourself can you imagine Efren, Busty or Alex pulling this kind of move? no chance they have to much class.
I know one thing he lost all his credibilty with the pros that were betting on him even, they all said that he forfeited and shouldn't have gotten any money back. I just wanted to clear up exactly what happened.
Thanks Rob Melrose

Rob,
Congrats to you. That story is worth the money not won in my opinion. Not only did you have one of the greatest gamblers say uncle, you came out looking like the bigger man (no pun intended) as well.

Sure, the money would've been sweet had you ended up winning as predicted, but money comes and goes. You've got this story for a lifetime. And possibly on Youtube as evidence!

Pulling up in the middle of :(... is a really bad , it happens to me when i play league players; in the middle, oh! my match is up got a go!! what can you do; i get them to pay the time, or something.

Thanks Rob Melrose

i didnt put paragraphs necessarily in the right places but this should help

Cmon Melrose- u arent new on the net

Rob is a good guy and I believe anything he says, even though, it's unbelievable that Dennis would do that.

Rob, you're a better man than I. He would have had to take that G from me.

Rob, he better be careful, because there has to be at least 100 amateurs that could beat him at any big event like Tunica/DCC/ SBE that can beat him with break and ball in hand. As you said, if you can beat the ghost, you can beat any player when you keep the break. I know for a fact I would play anybody in the world with this myself. I beat the ghost 40-50% of the time on a Diamond, so when I can play safe if needed and a guy could miss, it makes me the favorite.

I think you should have made him play of had the buyout at $500. Your generosity will never be repaid in the pool gambling circles. He and his backers were obviously very short on cash and heart.

This negates the terrific article I read about Dennis sleeping in the street and eating out of trash bins to make it in pool. Now that he's here he's lost his heart? He insults himself.

I go to some big events and match up with people for some pretty big sets $300-$500 of my own money. I have been caught at both ends, where I couldn't lose and I couldn't win. My first trip to SBE I lost three $300 sets to a guy I played even who should have given me a spot. The next year I played him again and broke even, winning one set each. This is what makes you stronger, but so few people have heart anymore, even if they have the cash.

Thanks Nostroke. I was dead tired and had literally just walked in the door this morning when I typed this.

I overheard Keith talking to somebody who was at Tunica in the action room. He said that Dennis Orcollo was playing some guy from Florida, race to 15 for a bean. The score was tied 8 to 8, and Dennis wanted to pull up.

The reason I made the post was I think it is okay to pull up if it is an ahead set game and the score is zero to zero, but in a race game, like a race to 15 and it's tied 8 to 8, I agree with the others that it should be a mutually agreeable thing to end without having a winner.

I never did find out if they finished the game or if they both agreed to end the game and take back their post monies, but it is an interesting dilemma that happens.[/QUOTE
