Put the chalk back right side up.

I play a guy who always puts the chalk back down anyway but facing up. I look around the pool room & every chalk I see is facing up. Is this the only clown out there that does this or are there others? I have a light colored linen wrap so getting chalk on my hands ain't real good.:angry:

A lot of people do it. It's very simple to just politely point out the fact that he is making the rails dirty with chalk.

Why don't more people hold their chalk in the pocket? I rarely feel it against my leg and it's very convenient instead of running around the table for a chalk.

I know how you feel, brother, about that blue or green stuff ending up in the wrong place, like your wrap or anyone's slacks. I live in jeans so it's not so bad for me.
When I began playing (around 59) we played snooker and anyone who set the chalk upside down had to put a quarter in a jar that sat on a shelf. I don't know what eventually happened to the money, I suppose the house man swallowed it, but in the half century of playing, since then, I have not put it upside down once. It would be as foreign as putting a glass of something liquid that way.

Wow, I thought I was the only guy in world that was being driven crazy by this. I play a couple of guys that do this all the time, one of them puts four to five pieces out and there is blue all over the rails.

Glad it not just me that it gets to!

One such "clown" who does this all the time is none other than SVB. :thumbup:

I actually came close to a fistfight over this very issue once. Yep, a physical altercation over chalk orientation. But that's a whole other thread.

This practice does put me on tilt and is bad etiquette. It makes no sense to get chalk dust everywhere since chalk = friction and we want our bridge hands to glide, right?

And SVB is by no means the only top player who does this.

If I ever make it into a match with Shane, I'll be sure and point out what he's doing wrong. :grin:

It's alway's been my belief if your gonna put chalk in your pocket, you should have to wear white pant's.

I always put the chalk in my pocket and try to chalk before each shot. I don't know if this helps my game or not but it's convenient.

I found a polite way of reconciling this problem and it has worked very well for me so far.
After a few games when the other guy is racking the balls () grab a towel and start wiping down the rails. while your doing this make a comment about how dirty the rails get from people that accidentally put the chalk upside down. If your opponent is decent at all he will take notice and stop doing it.

It's a nice way to solve the problem without pointing fingers.

Here's what I did when it happened to me in a tournament where my arms were getting covered in chalk. I asked my opponent politely to please put the chalk down right side up so we both wouldn't be covered in chalk.

She ignored me, so each time it was my turn after that, I took a towel and took my time wiping every rail and turned every piece of chalk right side up before I shot. After a few innings of sitting in the chair watching me do this, she finally corrected herself and started putting the chalk down correctly.

Great suggestion! It's amazing how people get all offended when pointed terms like "you" are used (even though it's technically correct -- he/she is the source of the problem), but when a "casual" observance is made without pointed terms, it's "read into" and accepted more readily.

The chalk ends up face down for a variety of reasons, unfortunately. If that's the biggest concern in this game, I guess we've got it good.

I use the same technique when getting bad racks in 8 ball league. A few sessions ago I was getting allot of 8's on the break and after word got out I started seeing allot of horrible racks. So before I broke and while the other guy was racking I would tell them this story: " Man, you wouldn't believe all the bad racks I've been seeing lately. Ever since I started making some 8's on the break people have been massaging the rack!"

It worked every time with one exception, and that guy got a table run put on him! (I love karma!)

My father actually does this whenever we play pool. After every time he is finished at the table, I wipe down the rails before I shoot. I also use my own chalk and remove it from the table with me when I leave.

I have noticed a lot of higher level players keep the chalk in their bridge hand when they shoot.

One of the guys that plays were I do isn't happy unless there's at least four pieces of chalk on the table, at least he doesn't put them face down. Why the need for all the chalk I don't have a clue.

One player in my league not only turns it upside down but taps it a couple times to get any loose chalk out before he chalks.
