There is someone that I play with frequently who I suspect is doing so for just this reason. He's been playing too long to not know the difference, and he places it upside down, specifically...

I've grown to ignore it. My hands end up blue no matter what I try, so I've just accepted it to be part of playing pool. I get distracted too easily as it it to allow myself to dwell on how or where the chalk is. (Mine is in my pocket, so I don't really care about the stuff on the table any more, even when it gets on my hands.)
 
This and the handshaking thread last year has made me realize how incredibly OCD and neurotic a lot of pool players are.

Yep, it's flu season. All you're getting from me is knuckles. ;)

And besides flu season, I wish I had a nickel for every time I went to the bathroom and saw guys taking a leak, or worse, never washing their hands on their way out. :nono:

Its all a mind game. We leave the chalk upside down and make you think we don't wash our hands to jar ya. :thumbup:

And how do you guys end up with blue hands? I play a few nights a week for several years and usually over the entire course of the night and I've never gotten my hands blue. I've seen a few of the high school kids that play non stop with the house cues and grind their chalk get blue hands but thats about all I've seen in the pool hall with blue hands.

I play with a $3000 cue with a white irish linen wrap.... I really don't want chalk all over it. I don't think it's an unreasonable request.

Now their hands are on the balls, chalk, table, rack and etc. Pigs are pigs and they will never change. These are probably the same players that put the chalk face down, grind the cue endless into the chalk over the table and then tap the cue on the rail to knock off the excess. Then repeat the process to survey the table again and end up miscuing.

I may be one of the few people at Hanks that wipes down the rails,they don't do it.
Also don't tell anybody but some times if I have to get perfect position I will set the chalk on the rail as a marker.

It baffled me for some time, until I started really watching everyone.

(I chalk with my right hand, so that isn't it.)

People putting the chalk upside down. Chalking their cues over the table. The tables not getting cleaned or brushed regularly. Every so often I'll grab some paper towels and wipe down the rails, but its a losing exercise. People don't seem to notice or care.

I set my hands down on the rails and the cloth fairly often, so I pretty much expect it now.
There is soap and water in the restroom.
 
If I'm playing a guy who keeps setting the chalk upside down on the rail I will ask him nicely a couple of times to stop doing that and explain why (makes a mess of everything!). If he continues to do it, he's lost me as an opponent! I will quit for sure, winner or loser I don't care.

Wow! You must play in a high end room.
At "Hanks" if there is paper towels and soap at the same time it's a great day.

I have noticed a lot of higher level players keep the chalk in their bridge hand when they shoot.

Well I'm certain you're not the only one that plays with a decent cue. But it still doesn't explain how someone else's chalk placement gets your cue dirty. I carry my own chalk. Play with a cue just as pricey as yours. I wipe it down at the end of the night and I don't get anything but the shaft even halfway blue. And I wipe that down a lot during my play. So that doesn't happen very often. I have to give it a good cleaning once a month or so. But I wash my hands if I feel any friction at all during my play. Loosen up and don't be so damn OCD. And if you bring up the 3 dime cue thing to me when I'm playing you. I would pull out a sneaky and play dumb just to have fun at that point. There is nothing more fun than the guys that spend more time cleaning their cue than practicing their shots.
