Q: SugarTree vs Tascarella

Hello AZ Community,
After completing sometime on dialysis and after 3 years of catching up financially and physically after receiving a kidney transplant I was very LUCKY to receive at the young age of 30 years old. My career is at full speed, side business is blossoming and We've now got a beautiful healthy15 month girl and life is good.

I've decided to splurge a bit on myself on a high end cue. I'm newer in what to ME is, the "upper of the high end" and I know there's the uber high end as well (collectibles).

Recently I was given the opportunity to acquire a new SugarTree. I've always admired the beauty of these cues and the simplicity of the woods together in their cues.

However, on the other side, I've always admired just about any Pete Tascarella cues for the traditional designs as well as the top notch quality of workmanship put into these beauties...

Regarding THESE 2 specific cuemakers Pete Tascarella and SugarTree, my question is how would you compare the hit of a Pete Tascarella to that of a SugarTree?

Now I understand that this is VERY relative as well as an OPINIONATIVE topic but I've always wanted a Pete Tascarella and I have a 99% 2013 SugarTree you might have seen that I posted here on AZ yesterday. I know some folks will say that that full splice cues are going to hit better and be stronger than that of a Merry Widow as well.

I want to thank you in advance for your input as well as being polite if I have not been perfectly on point with my categorizations, opinion so far, etc.

Play Well!

If I were you, for the money I would purchase a southwest since they have the best resell value and easiest custom cue to sell.

Or an Ed Young... BTW I am about to sell mine and will be a lot cheaper then a sugartree.

I play with a full splice ebony tascarella with i think Birdseye maple that I had a ring tail lizard wrap cut into cue. It plays amazing. The hit is very crisp and firm. It has that "tascarella sound" to the hit. Anyone that has hit with a tascarella knows what I'm talking about :) I haven't hit with a sugar tree but my money would be on a tascarella for sure. Hope that helps you some.

You answered your own question really. Opinionated topic.

Without you hitting each cue side by side I'm afraid you're not going to get an answer in here that's useful.

Sooooo, this is just a thread in the main forum letting us know you want to trade your Sugartree for a Tasc... :kma:

Why would a full splice cue hit better than a merry widow?

As has been explained here countless times, "hit" is subjective.

With that in mind, I think the full-splice butt holds up better if you're swinging it like a bat.

Both are fantastic looking cues but if they were side by side I would have to go with SugarTree with points because his choice of woods are second to none IMO.

Not sure who on this thread has owned both but I have. I have owned 13-14 Sugartrees and 3 Tascarellas.

They are not even on the same planet to compare, however both are very high quality cues.

Traditional vs. Modern

Buy a Tascarella and try it for yourself.

The person above that suggests it's a FT post, no it is not. I had one in the proper place for that.

I received some GREAT PM's that were very helpful. Thank you all for your input.

I shot with both yesterday and they're both WAY better then what I was hitting with.

THANK YOU!

I really think we're talking about two different worlds here. Its like comparing a performance vehicle to a performance boat. Both can be luxurious and perform well, both move you from point A to point B but are really living in different worlds.

To me Sugartrees put a real emphasis on unique woods, non-traditional woods and modern styling. There seems to be a real emphasis on differentiating cues aesthetically rather than solely by hit and structure. I don't believe hit comes in second to that but the vision and inspiration seems to come from the beauty of unique woods. Looking in places that others have not looked before. Not to speak for that cue maker, but my impression.

Tascs are much more traditional in design and execution. Obviously this cue maker is legendary in regards to structure, construction, durability, fit and finish.

Tough to really compare the two.

I would have to try both cues out, then pick the one that you like the best, offer to pay shipping both ways in order to chose. Would cost you a little more money but would be worth it in the end. Tom

I have owned several of both and you really can't make a bad choice. The only thing I would caution you on is when purchasing a Tasc , especially an older one check the point work carefully . I have found the earlier cues the inner points are prone to the tips being less than perfect. Doesn't seem to be an issue with their new stuff

I have never hit with either of these cues.I will say that since Sugartree is out the cue business. Who will service the cue if you need new shafts? His rings are unique and I would think would be hard to match.

I have owned both. Both were great examples of each. If I had to purchase a new one it would be neither. I am not a fan of steel jointed cues and ivory ferrules on a playing cue. Sugartree hit very good but not in the same Leauge as some of my other cues such as a southwest or my lambros.

That is bad information . Eric is alive and well and making cues. Poolshark22 just got 4 of them.
