QATAR WORLD CUP 10 BALL, OCT. 28 to NOV. 2, 2025

Just a guess, but I'm thinking "YOE-nus." The language is similar to Spanish.
Well, Jen, if you read the way it sounds in Spanish correctly, as I mention, it very much differs from the way you suppose. And the majority of English speakers would fall into the same little mistake about how Jonas sounds in Spanish :)

According to Gemini AI, one of qualifiers to win the whole thing in modern pool history is Francisco Sanchez Ruiz with his take on US Open in 2022. Says he made it through some last chance qualifying tournament (frankly I don't recall there is such for US Open, especially under MR, but further search did not bring any results yet).
In main stage FSR compiled wins over Ralf Souquet, Wu Kun Lin (L16), Carlo Biado, Ko Ping Chung and, finally, Max Lechner (13-10).

Also, Antonio Gabica is said to advance to the main field of the 2013 WPA World 9-Ball Championship by winning one of Qatari qualifiers. He got to be a runner-up, falling one step short of the title to Thorsten Hohmann (7-13).

You and Mike are correct. I haven't finished my morning coffee yet. :) I was thinking of Jose Parica, which is definitely "HOE-say," as you both agree. And now I do too. :)

I asked Jonás Souto (Spanish) how to pronounce his name, and it wasn't YOE-nus

The J is a breathy H and the accent is on the second syllable. So it's more like

ho-NAHS
  • The «J» is pronounced like the «h» in English “hello” (a soft, breathy sound, not the hard English “J”).
  • «o» sounds like the «o» in “go”.
  • «na» is pronounced like “nah”.
  • «s» is a standard “s” sound (like in “sun”).
Stress is on A. It is even written Jonás in Spanish.

We share same love to precision in regard to text and speech, hence I was thinking you would like to know how it actually reads :)

My request to @gopi-1 still stands. I'm aware of big Spanish influence on local culture, so Jonas in Spanish is my primary guess for Magpantay, but it could always be different.

Wow! Who are S. Kural and J. Magpantay??

Meet the finalists of Qatar World Cup 10-Ball 2025

Szymon Kural (POL), age 21

Euro Tour winner: 2023, Dutch Open - def. Francisco Sanchez Ruiz in the final; several strong finishes at other Euro Tour events
European champion: 2023 (14.1 contionuous in Veldhoven, Netherlands)
European championship runner-up: 2024 (10-Ball in Skopje, North Macedonia) - losing to countryman Wojciech Szewczyk.

World Junior 9-Ball Champion (U19): 2022 (and 2021 runner-up to Moritz Neuhausen)

Jonas Magpantay (PHI), age 31

2014 Kiosk Valentine 9-Ball Handicapping Tournament: He won the championship title at this local tournament, defeating Anton Raga in the finals.
2023 Manny Pacquiao 45th Birthday International 10-Ball Tournament (Singles): won the championship title.

So Magpantay seems to be looking up to his highest career finish by far here in Qatar.
2025 Qatar World Cup 10-Ball: Magpantay reached the finals of this major WPA-sanctioned tournament, where he was the "last Filipino standing". On his run to the semifinals, he notably upset former world champion Carlo Biado (11-8) and World Games gold medalist Oliver Szolnoki (11-7).

Double-elimination Stage 1:
Abdullatif Alfawal 9-0
Naoyuki Oi 9-6

KO stage:
Last 64 Oliver Szolnoki 11–7
Last 32 Carlo Biado 11–8
Last 16 Wojciech Szewczyk 11–5
Quarter-final Niels Feijen 11–7
Semi-final Moritz Neuhausen 11-6

And here are results for Jonas Magpantay in qualifying events:

1st chance qualifier
Hichem Benaissa 7-2, Abdulkarim Maksoud 7-2, Lu Hui Chan 3-7

2nd chance qualifier
Ebraheem Mohammed 7-0, Mubashir Raza 7-2, Jundel Mazon (Phi) 7-4, Mohammed Khalfan 7-1
Christian Gariando (Phi) 6-7 - for a Q place

3rd chance qualifier
Ali Kareem 7-0, Zein Alabeden Ousseily 7-2, Jesson Marabi (Phi) 6-7

4th chance qualifier
Muntadher Saddam 7-1, Alwaleed Almudhayan 7-2, Georgios Antonakis 7-1, Nasser Dwikat 7-5,
Lu Hui Chan 2-7 - for a Q place

So he entered the main event not as a qualifier but as a lucky loser!

We follow American english so say it like you say Jonas Brothers
That's the kind of attitude by all English-speaking pundits. Like "I could not care less" :p Hence we were having "GorSHT" from Yates for three years, until he finally got beat to correct version, and etc.

A good example of how AI needs instant proofreading. Gemini positively surprised me being very up-to-date with results from Qatar, being able to track the results down to semi-finals. Yet it somehow failed miserably about Magpantay's performance:

Never forget to check twice anything AI comes up with, following any of your prompts.

I'm all-in for Jonas Magpantay in upcoming final! He played 16 matches in qualifiers alone, eager to earn one of the spots. Suffered defeats from his compatriots and Taiwanese Lu (twice!), and apparently was allowed in as a so-called lucky loser (tennis term). Then he proceeded to win 7 matches, one of which included overcoming a Pinoy world champion and world beater Carlo 'The Black Tiger' Biado!

Jonas is just one more in a long, long line of Filipino pool playing clones, who all seem to have the same style, same game and keep on getting the same results. Win, win, win, like they've been doing for the last thirty years, dominating pool wherever they go. They are not flashy players and pretty much make everything look quite routine, methodically running through the racks like no big deal. Just another rack of balls to get out of the way. And they do exactly that, rack after rack, day after day, forever and ever. Cut shot, long shot, bank, jump, kick, safety, makes no difference, they can do all that and more.

The Pinoy players are not bothered by anything. Any table will do, any cloth, any balls, crowd or no crowd, tv or not. Pressure? What's that? This is what they love to do. There is no pressure for them. Put a cue in their hands and they're happy! Simply put, they are made to play pool and that's what they do. Better than just about anybody else too.

This particular ability is what strikes me the most about them Pinoys. I've witnessed one transition from an icy skating-rink-like nylon cloth to a table in the street with a blanket-like cloth, and produced the same strong game!

i was told magpantay was a prodigy too back in the day. but he hasn't done much since. this event he's knocked out champion after champion

First time I've watched a final in which one of the players is someone I'd never seen play before. I've only seen Kural about four times, but Magpantay not even once. With a Fargo of 820, Magpantay is rated as the sixth best Filipino player and rates the slight favorite.

Which longshot will win this championship? It's time to find out. Wishing the best of luck to both.

Last time I can remember that two completely unexpected players reached the final of a major together was when Marc Bijsterbosch met Jinhu Dang in the 2023 WNT Spanish Open final.

Are they not playing call-shot call-safe 10ball? Magoantay missed a 1 ball and left it safe, and Kural had to go shoot at it (hit it with a 2 rail kick)
