QR code technology has actually been around for a while now, but it's only been leveraged in the past few years. The tech isn't rocket science, but it is complicated. It is based on a standard, and there are several versions and enhancements that have been brought into the standard.

As far as reading one, it's not as simple as looking at a set of squares and converting it into a letter or character. There is a lot of other information stored in those QR codes, so it's a real task to figure it out... Something computers are good at.

Much of my air travel is now paperless. The major airlines use the QR code off of my smart phone.

The smart phones can read the QR Code (aka datamatrix code aka 2D Code) off of anything (TV screens, digital displays, paper and cardboard...)

I can read them just by looking at them, but I am sworn to secrecy.

In fact, I shouldn't have even said that.

Disregard.

10+ years ago there was something around named 'cat....' or '......cat' that was sort of a 'mouse' reader that had something to do with these bar code symbols--didn't last too long.....same thing??

My second job is drawing them. I do it all freehand and what none of you realize is that while it looks black, that is just the coating I put over it. Underneath the black are tiny dots. I started out using finger paints, but now I use crayolas. LD, of course.

dld

LD crayolas......... are they foam filled??

I do the Eticket and knew about the Smartphone method as you speak of but, what I was wondering, can you pass security showing them your Smartphone ticket without any hassles? Thanks, Ron

It does all kinds of cool stuff. Thinking about getting one tattooed on me with my addy in-case I get lost.:D

Yes. The security lines in the States have scanners as well in most airports I've been in. Some of the smaller airports (e.g. Cedar Rapids) didn't have them two years ago, but they might today.

if you stare at it long enough it looks like Obama bin Laden

Darn it! I saw a puppy dog with long, floppy ears. Maybe my reading glasses obscured the actual image !!!

Maniac (stared at it for 3 straight minutes :embarrassed2:)
