Now if I broke the balls, and i don't see the one ball. say I push out and pocketed the 6 ball for example, do we let go or spot the 6 ball back in the table?

Today we had this argument me and a friend of mine, he say we leave it pocketed... I said no we spot it in... help!

Stays down playing current rules. Back in the day......

Edited due to my lack of reading comprehension

The only time that the six would be spotted is if it is a "spot" ball. For example, if I'm spotting you the six, then the six does not stay down if I knock it in on a push

I think Texas Express rules, you don't respot it unless it's the 9. I could be wrong.

You are correct. Nothing spots except the nine in Texas Express.

Although, I have never seen anyone shoot the nine after a scratch on the nine..:D :D

Sure about this

Are you sure about this rule,I thought the only ball spotted is the nine.If you have a push you are entitled to this shot I don't see why the ball would be spotted. If you shoot a ball and make an ill leagle hit and pocket the ball then this ball stays down.Any help from other members.

I've never seen it played otherwise when a spot such as "the call six" is given. To clarify, if I knock in a ball (or one of the balls) I'm giving you as weight on a push, it is placed on the spot. The push cannot be used to eliminate opponent's "money ball."

Only the 9-ball will be spotted. All the other balls potted, stays in the pocket.

Is it correct to call push and pocket the one ball?

Yes, you can do that. The next shot will go to your opponent, because you called push. No ball in hand. 1-ball will not be spotted.

I've seen an interesting 1988 Nine ball finals. it was between Nick varner vs Grady mathews. only last 3 racks. however in this game Nick called a push and he pocketed a ball then the referee spotted it back in the table, watch it.

Maybe back then they weren't playing Texas Express. In some pro events the rules have been alltered a bit and I would bet this was the case here.

In Texas Express, the only ball that spots is the money ball. In tournaments, this is only the nine. In a money game, it is also whatever ball the spot is.

The way I have always played it is this-
Say I'm spotting you the 6- If I make the 6 on an illegal hit, or on a push, it gets spotted back up. If you make it on an illegal hit, it stays down.

It's just not fair to spot someone a certain ball, and then be able to get rid of it illegally. Now, if he accidentally pockets it on a foul, too bad. He just made the game tougher for himself. It stays down then, because it would also be unfair for me to have to shoot another ball because he fouled.

Look at it another way- If I can make the 6 on a push, and you say it stays down, even though that is one of your two money balls, then you can pocket the nine on a push. Now you have one money ball- the six, and I have none. I can't win the game no matter what.
Neil,

I agree with you in principal. However, in practice I think this should be specified ahead of time when gambling. The World Standard Rules don't make any note of handicaps that I'm aware of. Therefore, they say "the 9 ball" is spotted, but it could be argued that this should mean "the money ball(s)" are spotted.

In the league I used to play in (small league, using house rules) this came up sometimes and we didn't spot money balls that were potted during a push. I don't think that's fair, but that's how we did it.

1987 and 1988 were the transition years to the Texas express rules as far as I can remember.

Some Tournaments played by the old rules still, endless and I mean endless pool hall arguments took place over this, when two players just decided to play a set, nobody would say, ok....old rules or Texas express, then arguments still went on over the Texas express rules, it was rough period.

It took a while, but eveyone started playing express rules.

I took up One Pocket around that time.:)
