question about silver rings

since we can't get .050 nickel rings now has anyone tried putting together 2 .030 rings to make one .060 ring

I suspect you'll see a line but looking for an example if possible post pics if you can

Dave I have put 2 together before and as long as they are pressed tight there is little to no visible line.
I don't use many thick rings, is everyone out of them? I personally would get some tube and part off rings of the correct thickness if none are available.

I did

Dave,
I made 2 this month and both had the lines. The other time I did it, there was no lines..
I used the 1/64" and the 1/32" N/S Rings.
I did do two 1/32" N/S Rings together, the month before and came out O.K.

Can we all get together and order a bunch of .050" and split the cost?
How many CueMakers are willing to do this..
Then, research who has a Stamping Company that would stamp out theses for us..
Quote "I wish I could. Prather stopped making .050s. They're worth their weight in gold now."
Jen said the manufacture's price is high and would go for over $6.00 each for us..

you know if .030 rings are 10$ for 10 there is no reason .050s should be 6$ each. At worst twice the product twice the cost 2$ each should be fine for the same process. Reguardless I have almost no reason to order from prather now. So I don't. By trying to save a bit on them rings they loose my entire order. Hope it's worth it

Ps at 6$ a pop we still have to order at Certin number to get it to 6$. Crazy

well I just spoke with jennifer. We need to lock up 500 rings at 5$ each. She says they will not order them until they get 500 locked up. Oh well. There goes my order from them. If they are willing to loose my order every month Bc they aren't willing to sit on some product. Even at 5$ a ring I would order 50 or so just to have them. They would sell. They wouldn't sit on them for long. Everyone wants them

Using less then 50% more product for the same process as .032 and charging 4x is crazy. I wish I could get more cuemakers to follow suit but it's prob impossible. It's a shame Bc I like jeff and Jenn too. However I told them I wouldn't be ordering from them anymore

Dave,

You do realize that they don't make them, don't you?

They have to order them from somone else who requires them to order a certain amount. That is pretty much normal and customary.

As far as the costs go, I suspect that the .050" material is just not produced in the same quantities as the .032" stuff is. At least that would explain the price difference. Remember, the price of most things is not based just on the materials, but mostly on the cost to produce them. When you produce anything in small quantities, it gets real expensive. On the other hand, you can produce something very complicated, like a car for example, and produce them very inexpensively. Try to produce one car and see what it costs. The number would surprise you!

The Prather people are not only good people, but also good business people. Don't knock them for not selling a product at a loss.

I bet you broke their hearts. They will probably have to shut their doors because of losing your business.

If nobody in AZ will sell you rings does that mean that you will go somewhere else?

I have some that I won't sell you.

classy post.

thanks mason. What else should you expect from him?

Royce I understand your post. I also talked at great Legnth about them. I know they don't make them. They order them from the same place as the .032s. Same company same process exact same sizes ID and OD. Different thickness

It is not an order thing. I was told they would not place an order until they have 500 pcs locked up at $5 a ring. $4.50 if we get 1000. It's a prather thing.

Tony thanks for the offer. I do appreciate it buy I want to resolve this. Offset 050s are my favorite collars.

Arnot u know what to do with your rings. I don't want anything from you.

So use a real nickel. You can get .050 no problem, just like the old days. If you like I will make you some.

Have you considered buying sheet stock and making rings yourself?
Knifemaker supply companies offer it.

Last night I Googled Nickel Silver and there are a number of places that sell flat sheet at reasonable prices. However, of all the sources that I looked at, none offered it in .050ths. It went from .040 directly to .062. You just need to get about a 20 ton punch press and a few dies and you can make your own for around .75 cents each. I thought of doing this a few years ago so that I could make sterling washers cheaper but no punch presses became readily available. Now I'm to old.
By the way, there is no silver in nickle silver. Mostly copper and some nickle and the rest antimony and such.

I am assuming that the 16 ga at 0.051" is close enough for cue decoratin' ;)

I am also quite shocked that you couldn't find an old press there in the rust belt Dick

Unlike mills and lathes, few machine shops and factories have sprung for CNC punch presses when I was on the hunt. Changing to CNC equipment is what makes most machinery obsolete.

I don't know about the rings but........

There's no rust left, it's all been washed away by the rain:)

For $100 per day - plus expenses - I'll teach persons how to make
a washer out of sheet stock without involving a punch press.
