Question about some shots in pool

a friend of mine and I had this discussion about few shots in pool.

1. Combanation shot.
2. Billiard shot.
3. Carom shot.

Lets say you playing a nine ball.
I know the fact that combanation shot is when you shoot the cueball into the One ball, Then one ball goes right into the Nine ball and put it down. Thats a combanation.

Then if you shoot the cueball into the One ball and let the cueball runs into the nine ball and make it Thats a billiard shot (Correct me if i'm wrong here)

He said thats not a billiard shot. He told me that when you shoot cueball to the one ball and let cueball goes into the nineball and make it, It's a carom shot.

so I'm a bit confused. Thanks for whoever comment here. I'd really love to know the different between Carom shot, and Billiard shot and if I was right, or my friend is right. :)

If there is a difference between a billiard shot and a carom shot in 9-Ball, I don't know what it is?

I think it is just two different terms for the same thing.

My understanding has always been that a carom shot involves shooting object ball A into object ball B, pocketing object ball A in the process.

A billiard involves shooting the cue ball into object ball A. The cue ball then hits a second object ball pocketing it if the billiard is successful.

Check Byrnes for (what I would consider to be) a definitive answer. I always get these mixed up.

(EDIT: if it wasn't clear, I'm agreeing with you asbani)

Agreed. I think they are one in the same in 9 ball, 8 ball, etc.. But, if you play the game caroms, that is totally different from playing the game billiards. In caroms, you just hit the cue ball into one ball and the cue ball then hits the other object ball...no rails in between hits is needed. In billiards (like 3 cushion) you have to hit the cueball into one object ball then contact 3 cushions then contact the other object ball.

Here's the only thing I can find right now:

From http://www.billiardsforum.info/billiard-terms-definition/carom.asp

Carom Definition
A carom is a type of shot that occurs when the object ball touches or kisses one or more other balls or rails on its way to the pocket.

From http://www.billiardsforum.info/billiard-terms-definition/billiard.asp

Alternatively, billiard refers to a shot where the cue ball is caromed off of an object ball with the intent to strike another object ball. The shot is referred to as a billiard even if no cushions are contacted in the interim.

I'm not familiar with the game of billiards or the game of caroms so I won't venture to comment on either. But I think these definitions apply within the context of asbani's original post.

Nice informitive POST!

I think "carom" is the generic name for any ball (cue ball or object ball) ricocheting off another, and "billiard" is the name for the particular kind of carom where the cue ball caroms off one OB into another (with or without hitting rails in between). "Carom shot" and "billiard shot" aren't so well defined - they're just shots including caroms and/or billiards.

All the pool players I know use Carom shot and Billiard shot
to describe the same thing, ie, 'glancing' the CB off OB1 into
OB2, which results in some OB being pocketed.

The somewhat similar shot: glancing OB1 off OB2 to pocket OB1
is refered to as a 'kiss shot'.

in some pool culture, billiard and carom can mean the same thing. in others, they do differ. I heard J.Archer mentioned in a match where carom is where your hit OB1 to OB2 thereby pocketing OB1 in the process. to be more specific, he mentioned the word double-carom, which gave me the idea of the word. while billiard is simply ricocheting the CB from OB1 to OB2, thereby pocketing OB2 in the process.

IMO, this has been somewhat recognized by many to mean the same thing, eventhough it is not the same. I guess their basis for this is the term "RICOCHET" and not the purpose of the hit of which OB is to be pocketed.

I was just going to say the same thing - Regardless of what may be the REAL definition, every pool player I know treats "billiard" and "carom" as synonyms. Context, not definition, usually will tell you what the person means.

If you shoot the CB into the 1-ball, the 1-ball hits the 2-ball, the 2-ball glances off the 3-ball and goes 3 rails contacting the 9-ball and pockets the 9-ball.

You will have sucessfully executed a (Combo - Carom - Billiard).....All in one shot.

One other thing! A 'Combanation' and a 'Combination' are nearly the same thing. Although a combanation is a much better played shot. That's why it has an extra 'a' in it. You get an A for making this hard shot. For a regular combination you only get an 'i'. :)

That's true Asbani, but don't get the idea that ALL Billiard shots MUST be 3 cushion shots. As quite a few have already stated, the words carom and billiard are interchangeable in the vernacular. In other words, as they apply to pool.

If you simply shoot the cue ball into the One Ball, and glance off it into the Nine Ball which is in front of the pocket and thereby win the game, we might say either, "He made a nice little Billiard to win" , or, "He played a simple Carom into the Nine to end the game" . Either is correct...Tom

Not to be confused of course with a "combonation" which obviously is a country where all the natives hate to shoot straight in shots period.

I was hoping it was a country where the national snack was

Note: There are three pages to this Cuetable

CueTable Help

1) Combination (obviously)
2) Carom (object ball glances off another ball and goes into pocket, or in this case, the nine)
3) Billiard (cueball glances off of object ball to pocket the nine)

there you go!
