Question for Gregg Hovey (Billiards International)

When Matt Braun was the driving force behind the ESPN Tournament of Champions there appeared to be consistent guidelines regarding the 4 players that would compete in the winner takes all men's and women's events.

It appears, particularly on the women's TOC that there are not consistent set of guidelines regarding who is choose and why. Reference the AZ Front page announcement from BI:

On September 30 at 2pm, Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee presents the WPBA sanctioned TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS which will highlight the 4 most accomplished women champions contending for the title Champion of Champions:

Gregg, could you please explain the standardized selection criteria or is it strictly subjective.

Thanks

Wedge

I remember the old tournament of champions, so it would be interesting to know the criteria.

One would reasonably think BI would respond

Billiards International thought it prudent to have their press release posted on AZ to generate interest in the upcoming event. Wish they would also think it prudent to answer a legitimate question unless they do not follow AZ with the exception of posting press releases.

Would appreciate a response from Gregg or BI

Thanks

Wedge

I woudl like to know the answers to the selection process too.

Why is Karen Corr not on the list? Isn't she ranked number 3 at this time? In fact, by golly, I think she won this event a few years ago.

Pool politics at its finest. I guess it doesn't matter how good a player you are. It's who you know these days. What a shame!

Very few ad posters for events actually participate outside of posting their ads.

I want the old COC back with 8 players and 50k prize.

I found this poster.

The WPBA updated their ranking list on August 15. They have Ga Young #1 Allison #2. Looks like the poster is wrong!

Jeanette and Ewa exhibition should be fun, but they're not in the Challenge of Champions.

Jasmin Ouschan won the only WPA event this year, the Masters in January. Allison Fisher and Ga Young Kim are the two top ranked. Kelly Fisher is the two time defending champion.

Those seem pretty reasonable choices to me for the main event.

I read on FB that Frank del P-something will be there. He has been moderator and referee at several of Allen Hopkins events.

What I remember most about him is when he threw Earl out of the pro event for acting up. :o

He also did one of the Skins Billiards Championships in A.C.

Here's my Frank picture from the Skins event at the Hilton Resorts and Casino in Atlantic City. He's a nice guy.

I thought it was a bigger misstep to not bring back Darren Appleton and include Albin Ouchan.

Not knocking Ouchan, his game is stellar. Darren had an accomplished year (highlighted with winning Chinese 8 ball) and is a former world champion (if one wants to compare careers) and was the runner up to Thorsten in last years TOC.

Niels is a lock as defending world 9-ball champ

Shane, current two time defending world pool masters, three time defending U.S. open 9-ball, this is another lock.

Thorsten automatic entry as defending TOC winner (not to mention big wins in 14.1 and bar table 10-ball this year).

Thanks Stu

I agree they are reasonable choices. The point I was trying to make was is there a defined selection process as agreed upon with the WPBA and BI.I would expect players as well as fans would like to know how the players are selected.

Thanks again for the input

I think it's a pretty simple question the original poster asked. Who are the four most accomplished players? In other words, what is or was the criteria? I don't think it's too much to expect an answer.
