Question for you table experts

Had a conversation today with a table mechanic, who says that any three-piece slate table can be made to championship specs simply by adding Artemis cushions, Simonis 860 cloth, proper shims and leveling. Anything else is just furniture, he said.

Does this guy know of what he speaks or is he blowing smoke up my blow hole? Thanks.

I would take exception to that statement, but I'm no table expert. First of all the rails and how they attach is fairly critical to a good playing table. Skinny rails can be hard to bridge on as well. Sheer mass is important too. A heavy frame and support system makes a table less likely to develop bad "rolls".

Funny how you can take all those "home" tables and do what you want to them and they will never play like a Gold Crown or Diamond. Wonder why?

Hmmm...no. There is such a thing as mass involved in the rail design which helps rebound the balls off the cushions, most 3 piece slates are designed to "drop" the balls, meaning the slate shelf can't really be considered to be of championship quality either. Frame design makes a big difference as well. So your friend is kind of right, in the sense that if you have something of quality to START with, you CAN fix it up to make it play more like a tournament table.

He's blowing strange smoke.
Not sure just exactly what he means by "championship" specs but I've yet to see a
governing body requirement for Artemis, 860 or shims. Using his statement would
make a GC just furniture because Bwick uses Superspeed and not Artemis.
If you need table work I'd suggest finding someone else.

Maybe that's the only three things that mechanic can do? Johnnyt
