Quit drinking and my game has gone to shiiiiiiiiiit

I quit drinking several years ago due to it raises my blood pressure too much. Every player that knew me before I quit drinking swears I played better then than now. I do drink during tri cups and ltc's and I do play great ...most of the time. Last cities it caused quite a bit of talk when I beat a 9 by 15-5 btw I am a 5. I also beat a 7 by 17-3.

Alcohol does not really make me play better. What it does it takes away all the negativity going on in my head . I guess what a friend said one time is an apt description. I am fearless on a table when I drink lol.

The negativity I mentioned is more or less like.....man if I miss this shot he is out....wish I hadn't left myself so bad etc...etc. when i drink and a thought tries to pop up my inner self says....aww hell just put the damn thing in the hole like you have done thousands of times before and 99.9% of the time it goes lol. As a result I usually have more success...especially again higher levels since I am the best player on my team....yea my team expects this lowly 5 to whip up on the 6's and above come tri cups and ltc's lol

I was talking to someone at work today...been a loooong time since I had a hangover.

Fukc that! Not worth it.

Is that what kids do to you?

You are doing things to you body it's not used to in the way of working out and not drinking. It will take some time would be my vote. When I stopped drinking a good while back, it took some time.

The thought that enters my mind is not to over think things. When I used to drink a lot, I didn't think about much when half bombed. I would get up there and fire em in without a thought. Even now days if I over think things too much, I screw myself. When I relax and have fun, and realize I won't make every ball I shoot at, and will make some mistakes, I actually play a lot better by not putting undue pressure on myself.

Hope you get a few rolls going your way soon.

I usually only drink when I go out to shoot a weekend tourney. I get out 1-2 days a month. I'm just too busy with work, homework and the grandkids to spend spend time drinking. If I pace myself at a beer as hour or so, I can last about 3-4 hours before my game tanks (Some days I drink more because I could care less about the play especially when my drinking buddy is with me). The poor play isn't because I'm drunk but it's definitely alcohol related. I considered not drinking while playing but its my only off time and I want to blow off steam. I even get my wife to drop me off so I don't drink and drive.

My point is, alcohol will affect my pool playing even when I'm not actually drunk. It seems to affect me more as I grow older. If I played more or had more me time, I might take it more seriously and withhold the alcohol until the play is over.

I completely quit drinking 3 years ago. Was tired of the people I live with getting so stupid every time I had a buzz. They were tired of it too.

Here's what I found.

Figured I would automatically lose weight. Wrong

Figured I would automatically play better. Wrong again

Figured the people I live with would be happier. Correct

I find myself playing a match sober and my mind wanders while in the chair to non pool related life issues. Not good

I find myself pondering the outcome of matches more while in the chair. Not good

I find myself with more energy during long tournaments. Good

I have more money. Good

My liver functions are now normal. Good

I will not ever get a DUI. Good

I miss Scotch. Not Good

Phony beer is tasty. Good

Drunk people are obnoxious. Already knew this.

My game got used to being sober but it took about a year. Not sure it's better than it was before as I was never very intoxicated. Just a steady habit.

I can see how a drink can calm nerves. Congrats for being some of the few who can quit. I myself cant be buzzed at all, sober playing is my best playing. Some strong tea is the best companion right now.
Alcahol has always been too strong for my body. If i choose to catch a buzz ill choose cannabis every time. But i do enjoy a craft beer or a good whiskey on occasion.

WTF man..... I quit drinking about 6 weeks ago (to help with my weight loss efforts) and since then my pool game has gone to shit. Zero control, missing shots, second guessing, frustrated. If something doesn’t change it might be time to hang it up....

Also add in the fact that I starting working out and my entire body seems whacked.

Congrats on the life changing decisions you have decided to make. Give your self some time to practice and play while sober and after working out. I am a strong believer that practicing after a work out is a good session. but you also need to practice on days you don't work out.

maybe just drink 1-2 beers with a glass of water in between. Hope it gets better and keep your head up.

You talk about it like you had an alcohol problem. If that's the case, you are doing the right thing. But having a couple of drinks once a week can do more good then harm. Moderation folks.

No alcohol problem. I play pool 3 times a week and having 2-3 drinks a night is not the way i want to do it anymore. Those drinks usually are fallowed by food.... I'm sitting at 250lbs and i'd like to see 205 someday. Drinking has to go, will help the late eating deal.

I just started drinking after reading this thread.

Yeah, I rarely drink, maybe a glass of wine with holiday meals but thats about it, but Im thinking about taking it up if its going to improve my game.:idea::idea:

Congrats on your decision Mr. cbi, I hope it goes well for you.

It's not the booze , or lack thereof. It's the working out/exercise that's messing with you. Muscle memory specifically. Your brain says do this...but your body is stronger ,(weaker right after a workout), then before. There will be improvement in a few more weeks. Hang in there. Matt D.

Matt,

You might be on to something. I have already seen changes in my upper body strength. I'm also starting to see that lifting on pool days is hard on my game, for now. I'm starting to feel great and have no plans on giving up the gym. I hope the body adjust itself soon and my game comes back.

Exactly, i have been told my game is not the same now... LOL. I just refuse to give it at this point in time. If drinking lead to better pool the pro's would be doing it during their matches. I don't think Shane and the rest of the guys drink during events to quiet their minds during play. I need to find a way to do that without the booze.

thanks, the mind game when 100% sober is crazy....

McCready certainly drinks while playing. In his best playing times and now.

It will. You will end up playing better than ever if you put the time in.

Even though you are not used to your muscle strength, speed, and control it is because your muscles are adjusting and you are developing finer control, more strength and overall flexibility.

Basically your body is getting better and more athletic and your mind isn't used to it yet. Practicing at least a little bit as often as you can will help keep your mind/body in sync. And you do need to turn off the editor per my previous post.
