Rediculous thing happened to me today....

Split the money...

If the tourney couldn't be ended in time on the proper day...I'd just split the money. We did this a couple months ago...I played in a local tourney...and at 2am we were supposed to START the last match...as I came all the way thru the loser bracket. We had to work the next day, we both agreed to split it and go home. Problem solved. Neither of us had anything to prove...I knew he could beat me, and he knew he could be beat. We're at the wire. Great job. We're both winners.

What's the problem? People crazy over 80 bucks makes me sick.

Ok...

just playing devils advocate here...

So if i understand what happened...you decided when you would come back to finish the match and told the bartender that...(doesnt seem like you discussed it with the opponent just he didnt argue so you assumed he had no issue) .you then slept a good 6 or so hours....sat around the house...ate dinner..watched the football game...then casually drove down stopped to set up a lesson and then went to play the guy who was in the hot seat...who went home at the same time...and then got up to be back to play in the tournament and has been there since a minimum of 10 am that day..so roughly a 12.5 hour day...and you now want to play a set on top of that....

Couple of things jump out at me...who is Tim? What authority did he have to decide anything? Same tournament director for the 8 ball as the 9? Why didnt you talk to him anytime during the day? If he said come down at 1030 or 11 then it would be him deciding what time the match would be done...and yeah he sounds like a idiot (the td that is) but he would have had some clue...what if the game had gone into overtime...was the guy in the hot seat suppose to just sit around and wait on you??

Honestly.... I probably would have looked at the TD and told him to either call you and get you down there or make a decision and award somebody the prizes....

Geno-

Geno,

If at all possible please PM me players name - it allows us to watch certain p
ayers that have a Problem always playing nice.

It is good to have a heads up - especially to us - since we do large events and events all over the country.

It will be held in confidence.

IMO, the pot should have been split at the end of the 1 DAY tourney. A side winner should have got around 180, and B side winner around 160.
The A side winner handing you your envelope the next day with only the 130 is wrong, since you guys agreed to finish the sets. If he didn't want to re-schedule again then a 50/50 chop is fair.
You are owed to finish the sets or get 30-40 more, if you agree to a chop.

And why would it be fair to split evenly? One guy is undefeated and on the hill for the win to boot and the other has already lost one match and most likely lose another?

I know you are showing some love for Gene but seriously....

50/50 split? That wouldn't be fair either unless both players agreed.

Why is the 50/50 split the right thing to do? Maybe because when Gene returns for the next two short sets, I am betting on him to win both sets. Maybe because it's the rule of the house. (If the closing hour hits before you start the finals, it's a 50/50 split) Or maybe it should be the rule of the house. Why make people come back to play the next day for a small tournament like that?

If it was ordained in advance and a rule of the room, it would be fair to everyone.

On a similar note, if I get knocked to the one loss side and I make it to the finals and have to win two sets, I no longer have to tell my opponents that if I win the first set I won't be "splitting it". So many times, people have lost the first set to me and then want to split it. They now know that if I win the first set I am the favorite to win the second set. That's just my mentality and history.

And yeah, it would be nice of both parties agreed to split.

Knowing Gene, he probably wants to play the two sets unless you are a Perfect Aim student. :yeah:

you had to win three games in a row and then win another set. that puts you about 15 to 1 dog. you should have maybe got 5 or 6 bucks out of the 80 difference.
when the bar closed you probably should have asked for ten bucks out of first place and called it quits.

but the other guy was not right about the whole thing.

If the guy knew you were going to be there to finish the set then he should have played it out. Kinda nitty to make you drive 30 miles just to tell you that you aren't playing.

Sometimes though it's best to just let it go and not make an enemy. If the $80 means that much to him then let him have it and take the high road. Give him your phone number and tell him he can call you anytime when there is a change of plans, if he needs a lesson or wants to gamble a little.

50/50 isn't fair but maybe a split of some kind. I would have just negotiated it out right then and been done.

Ohbla Di Ohbla Da :grin-square:

I'm not convinced Geno's opponent is the bad guy here.

Rereading the original post closely, it looks like the real issue was a misunderstanding about what "we'll play after the Packers game" means.

Does that mean "We'll play at exactly 10pm when the game finishes"?
Or does that mean "We'll play when the game finishes and gene has 30 minutes to drive to the pool hall and maybe an extra five minutes to go set up some lessons"?

Gene, your opponent was in the building at the moment the game ended, you weren't.
It sounds like you made him wait 35 minutes after the game ended. That's probably why he's angry. It's not his fault you're located 30 minutes away... he doesn't know that, and it doesn't sound like you warned him.

From his perspective you made him wait 35 minutes, and typically a delay that long = you forfeit.

You should have either warned him about the 30+ minute delay (the night before ideally)... or better yet, come to the hall and watched the end of the game on their TVs, so you could be ready to start at the agreed time.
