Refinish

I sent a cue that I picked up to a cuemaker for refinishing. The cue wasnt made by the cuemaker that I am using for the refinish.

The finish was pretty terrible, and I thought it was a "superglue" finish. It had chipped some and worn too. The cuemaker doing the refinish on the cue told me he thought it was laquer sprayed cue. He is telling me it is coming off very very "gummy" and like "sanding wet paint".

I just wonder what some of your horror stories were, and what you thought about finishes that you had to remove.

Is that superglue refinish as bad as I imagine?

Ken

I use a superglue finish, it is not to bad other than the smell:wink:. I have no other experience with any types of finishes so I may be using the worst kind and just not knowing it. But I do like how they come out. My only problem is sometimes I can't get rid of small hazing scratches. If anyone has any tips I would appretiate it.

Actually a Super Glue refinish is very very similar to refinishing a cue that was finished Auto Clear coat. I have refinished cues like your describing where the finish was gumming up when it was being removed, I don't know what was used but it was very time consuming removing the crap.

But the worst problem I ever found to date when refinishing a cue was a Linen wrap that was placed over another Linen wrap. It appeared that who ever had wrapped the cue before I received it for refinish had cut the wrap grove to almost 50 thousands in depth. So to cover up their mistake they put a complete linen wrap on and then put another over it to try and get it flush.

To a smaller degree I have found cues where some one used an extra fine Black Marker to make the points sharp and even. This can be a pain in the butt if your not very careful.

More than likely is not the super glue finish but the epoxy underneath which was probably not mixed correctly or and sanded before fully curing and applying super glue finish. IM0 :)

I think I have heard about this being done when someone tried to put on a "thick" leather wrap, and then when they wanted to come back with a linen wrap it was too deep.

Ken even for a thick leather wrap 50 thousands is why out line, the standard I use for linen wraps in 25 thousands, and leather is only around 10 thousands more. One of these days I will start doing leather wraps myself, right now if a customer wants one done I take it out to my friend in Bremerton Jerry Price.

You've never seen dipped UV finish.

Superman Gomez came here one night and wanted his leather wrap replaced on his Pred cue. I had to glue two leathers together b/c the wrap groove on his Pred was close .080 each side.

Yes Sir
Thicker leathers are not as uncommon as people think.

Well thanks for the information guys I do not think I would ever cut a groove that deep, in my opinion it would cut way too much meat off the handle.

Leather was not always the business that it is today. The ultra leather that Predators had was way to thick but there are others out there with thicker leathers than .025 on them. Best bet not to assume what's there is the correct size. Wish I could give you a better answer than that but it is what it is.

Greg. I heard of a guy with a high end cue that wanted a LEATHER wrap
had it installed and then changed his mind because he gave the cue to hix son.So being in a hurry, ask to have the leather removed and reraped with linen. could this be the cue you repaired?

No I don't think so, like I said above the cue had a linen wrap on it, with another linen wrap under the first. The depth of the wrap groove was about 50 thousands, I fixed the cue but it was a pain in the ass. I don't know what happened or even who did, and I really don't care at this point, but it was the deepest wrap groove I have ever seen.
