Removing Wrap From a Cue

I have a cue I am trying to identify. Thought about removing the wrap to see if there is anything under it that would help me out. But I also wish to keep the wrap as I believe it is cortland and would like to clean it and reinstall it. Can this be done? If so, how do I remove it? In case one of you cuemakers here has an idea, here is the cue that I am trying to ID.

if you cut it off youll have to replace it, i dont believe re-using it is a option, cue could use a refinish aswell might aswell do it while your taking the wrap off and replace the butt cap aswell.

but all this work will probably cost more than you have in the cue.

I don't see it as being Taiwan.
The butt-cap suggests that it's from a large manufacturer.
What looks like ivory joint collar and ivory ferrules tells me it's from one of
the large manufacturer's custom shop.
The ring-work doesn't look Taiwan either.
How many imports have you seen with 2 matching shafts?

I can't think of any way to re use a wrap.
Every time I pull a wrap off, it always breaks apart wherever there has been a previous hit tithe wrap area.
Whether it looks good or has noticeable dings.
When a. Wrap is installed it gets pressed, which flattens the once round thread into a square.
If you got lucky..... Very lucky in my experian e to get the wrap off in one piece, it would be next to impossible to get it back onto the cue in the same place, and be smooth again.
I think re pressing it would weaken the strands too.

Just my opinion
But I would just re finish the cue
I rarely see markings under the wrap, although I always date the cue or re wrap under the wrap

And neither has anyone else...

Looks like a Taiwanian Special to me.
I dont know cortland. Feels weird to me. But I like lizard and wrapless. But I guarantee this isnt a Taiwanese cue. I know the difference. And how many Taiwan cues have points like this and not to mention ivory joint, ferrules and inlays. I may not know what I am talking about with the wrap, but you dont know what you are talking about with the cue. That I guarantee.

Plenty, as a mater of fact.

Yeah, I hardly know anything about cues.

Have you verified the ivory? It looks like plastic in the pics.

looks like alternative ivory to me.

who ever refinished the cue will be able to tell for sure when they sand it or face it, there will be a bad smell, plastic there wont be.

i have a biddy that collects any pool cue he can get his hands on for cheap, im fairly certain ive seen a cue pretty much just like this, ill send him the pics later and see if he has it in his shop, chances are he will know what it is.

Come on Dale, you know better than that.
Going by your logic (18 thread), all Meuccis come from Taiwan.
There are many American Cms that use the 18-pin, including me.
I think Gina cues for another.
I will agree however, that many import cues also use that thread.
That's not really a good indicator of place of origin though.

The more I think about this cue, the more puzzled I am.
This cue could very well be import but there's nothing definitive.
Other than the butt-cap. It looks similar to a Dove-cue style b-cap.

There's something about the color scheme that's throwing me.
Red & Maple veneers on the points yet Maple and black veneers for the joint ring-work.
And only at the joint, hmmmm. They actually look out of place.
They are done well, nice detail, clean and crisp, just not right for this cue, IMO.

As to the ivory (or ivory substitute), I wouldn't want to say for sure without the cue in my hands.
I'm by no means an ivory expert and don't have intentions of ever being one but if what
we're looking at is faux ivory, it's very impressive.
To that end, I don't recall ever seeing ivory on an import cue, faux or otherwise.

There's something that I noticed the first time I looked at the pics, but didn't say anything.
If you look at the jnt-end of the shafts, you'll notice that one of the inserts is set
deeper into the shaft than it should be. No comment, just an observation.
Too many questions on this one for me.

To the OP, subdude, you might want to cut Dale (PDcue) a little slack.
He really does know cues and he'll give you his opinion the way he sees it.
He's just not going to hold your hand while he's doing it.
That's just the way he is. Again, just an observation.

Not a Dove cue butt cap, not even similar. It's even a different material. I collect them and their "cousins" and know them very well. Actually, the veneers look more Dove. I may post an example.

If you look at that butt cap again it is sleeved over what I think is the original butt cap material. I think it's a repair, so we can't know what the original looked like. It was even a different material than the repair by the looks of it.

I noticed that shaft insert too. Import or otherwise it could have an extra shaft, no big deal I think. But that insert made me wonder if one shaft might not be original....but the rest of the shaft matches so perfectly....so I don't know.

A lot of head scratchers about this one but I like it. Artistically speaking it is a hodge-podge....as you said some of it looks out of place.

I'll be curious about what Trent's buddy has to say about it. I'm a bit like him, collect what is cheap that I can get my hands on. One ends up knowing unusual cues that way. Maybe he'll know something.

I go along with the repaired comments on buttcap and possibly the one shaft. Joint looks good I lean towards Ivory but if not is certainly good faux. On the import part, could be but if the cue has any age to it I would say that they usually don't waste that type of material on joints. These days they do.

Mario......who can filled the Atlantic with questions and a coffee cup with weak answers :)

I may be reaching but does the butt cap looked sleeved? Like the original "ivory" may have cracked and someone sleeved plastic over it?

One way to check if it is ivory is to super heat a stick pin and touch the face. You'll smell if it is ivory right away.

The thing the butt cap is sleeved over is not ivory. That I know. It is the same color as delrin. But since the repair job was so sloppily done, I cant tell what it is. I am gonna have the cue refinished, rewrapped and re-repaired. The original butt cap I believe would have been delrin due to the coloring.

The joint collar and rings look like they were added later on.
They don't match the points , windows and dots to me.

When looking at the choices and dimensions of the critical design elements how could anyone not think of Bill Stroud when looking at this cue. Alternating two color veneers, large maple windows with rings above and below in the butt sleeve, large dot inlays, large maple checks as part of trim rings and the delrin butt cap. They all scream 68-72 Joss or early Joss West. My guess is a block letter Joss era cue and the rings are original even though the ivory joint is likely not.

Yes, we have said that earlier. I agree, it looks like a repair.

From the pics I think it is delrin as well. What is funny is that they sleeved over and glued onto delrin. As far as I know it does not glue well.

I agree with you, restore the butt cap to original or as close as possible.
