Reno Action/Tourney Update

I watched Matlock play, he beat Buddy, and he was playing very good. I'm surprised that Baraks lost at all the way he was playing. He has an awesome game!

Chohan and Manalo played some, 8 ahead 9b. I believe Manalo managed to pull it out but TRex got up to 6 ahead at one time. TRex was getting some weight. First time I ever saw Manalo play, he plays pretty awesome.

Melissa Little was playing very good. She was the most impressive female player there that I got to see, I didn't get to watch Herndon.

Did you happen to see the match that Jamie lost? What was the final score do you know?

Thanks!

One more thing I forgot to mention, there was a contingent of about 5 players from Austraila there and they played pretty good. One of them, Whim (SP) had TRex down 8 to 3 in a race to 9 and lost. TRex came back from that huge defecit and when he got to about 7, his opponent just couldn't get it back together again. He missed a critical shot that wasn't that difficult on the 6 ball at case game and Tony proceeded to run out from there.

Buddy Hall put on a clinic for $150 for 4 hours and I plunked my money down. Only one other player did the same. Can you believe that? I practically got a 4 hour private lesson from one of the all-time best 9 ballers in the world for $150!!! How much do you think it would cost for lessons from Tiger Woods or any of the top atheletes in other sports? BTW, the lesson was outstanding!!! I'm looking to improve my game, actually it already has. It hurt me for the tournament though. I was trying to play and assimilate all the information from Buddy at the same time and it was too much for me. It's tough working on new stuff and playing for pressure. I played all day yesterday and really caught a gear and I'm thrilled that the stuff he showed me is really paying off!!

Buddy is a great teacher! He has a no-nonsense style but is very complimentary when you do it right. And, he knows so much!! Unbelievable experience!! Worth the money and the frustration of not doing as well in the tournament as I might have otherwise. I'm looking forward to the next tourney I play, though, because I will be ready with my new skills!!

I'm sorry, I didn't. I can't understand how he might have lost. He was one of the most impressive players that I've seen in a long time. Him and Tony Annigoni played hooks and kicks on the 1b in one game for about 15 minutes! It was an awesome display by both players!!

Jamie has definitely been on his game here lately. It's nice to see because he's a helluva nice guy and his wife is adorable... they're really great people. I do know that he lost to Shawn Putnam who has also been on his game this yr...taking 1st place in the 1st two UPA events. As good as Jamie is playing, it appears that Shawn is really on his game for this tournament also. I heard Mike Davis is playing great too even though he went to the one loss side early. He's plowing through the field pretty good. I wish I was out there... sounds like alot of folks are playing some great pool this week.

It seems to me that you got the best deal at the event. Four hours with Buddy Hall for $150. You ROBBED him. JohnnyT

Hi Rick, I havent managed to meet you yet but hopefully before the weekend is over. John Wimms is actually from Ireland but we all lived in SYdney for a few years hence the confusion. I think John was 8:2 up and lost 9:8, hes a bit pissed at himself but he has a great game. He eventually lost to buddy hall 9:8 in the last 33. I lost my second way too early, played crap but got it back from 8:4 down to 8:8 and then hooked myself on a run out in the last rack :(

We're all going to sacramento next week though, and then 3 of us are probably going to Taiwan which is going to be cool! :-)

Give me a shout if you see me before you leave

Jamie Baraks & Chris Szuter both went to the one loss side last night. Tony Chohan & Shawn Putnam will play tonight on the winners side. That's all I've been able to get get so far. I would like to find out about a few more people if anyone else out there knows anything. Anyone heard from Melissa Herndon??? The brackets show her fighting her way through the loser bracket. I would love to know how the Mike Davis & Danny Basavich match turned out. I'm afraid to call anyone out there because I never know when someone has an early match or was up late... I have to rely on people out there to call me which isn't very reliable. I've all but begged a few people to keep me posted and I might get a text msg once a night.

Hey girl! Thanks for asking about me...it's cool to know you were looking out for me!!! I don't have a laptop, otherwise I could have kept everyone posted about what was going on. I played pretty bad throughout the whole event....just couldn't get the feel for the tables and couldn't adjust to the lighter than normal cue-ball. Anyhow, I flew home today...so I can't really give any updates past last night's action.

The players on the winner's side are Putnam vs Chohan and Sambajon vs Manalo. They play tonight at 7 pm....which should have started about 15 minutes ago...LOL.

All 4 players put a pretty good beating on their opponents last night. Sambajon's match was over quickly....he played lights out. The Putnam - Szuter match was all Putnam...which was surprising because Szuter destroyed Horsfall in the match previous to that. Chohan - Jones was a good match too....Jones took a fast 4-2 lead....but after that, Chohan caught a gear and beat Jones 9-5. I didn't really watch the Manalo match.

Anyhow, best of luck to the players left. I predict a hot-seat match of Putnam vs Manalo....which if I am not mistaken will be a re-match since they just played at the BCA event in Vegas.

Of course I was looking out for you! You're one of the kewl girls! ;) Sorry you didn't find your groove this week. You were plowing through the one loss side fairly well. I heard about them using the red circle cue ball with either centennial or aramith balls (can't remember which brand).

Jamie Baraks beat Ronnie Wiseman 9-5, Shawn Putnam beat Tony Chohan 9-1, Santos & Manalo went hill hill and Santos scratched on the 6 ball. Soooooo your prediction is correct... Putnam will get his Vegas rematch against Manalo and Jamie Baraks will play Santos. I'm still trying to find out about Chris Szuter and Mike Davis... they're both on the one loss side and I haven't heard anything....

They were Aramith balls...but Double J told me that the red circle cue balls they used weren't normal red circles...they were way too light. All the pro's I talked to agreed....there was definitely something off there.

Good for Jamie. He is playing very well...I hope he keeps it up! Big win for Shawn...9-1...wow! And the Santos - Marlon match sounded exciting....wish I had stayed one more day!

Szuter lost to Matlock....but I don't know about the Davis match.

Keep us posted!

I already left and am home now. I'm planning on playing at Hardtimes though so I'll say "Hi". My name is Rick Wallage so just look for me on the board. I'm hoping the Buddy Hall lessons will help me finish a little better than in Reno.

Are you having a hard time sleeping there? Man, I was dying of sleep depravation! That damn train must have run 4 or 5 times between midnight and 7 AM!! Sounded like it was coming right through my room!!

You got that right!! I'm still counting my blessings!! I just don't understand pool players!! They'll lose $200 in a game and not think anything of it yet to shell out $150 for a lesson and they think it's rediculous, even from someone like Buddy. Go figure!

Dave's cue

Does anyone know what cue David Matlock is playing with? Any help would be appreciated ;)

Dave is playing with a Jensen cue made by Mike Johnson. It is a beautiful cue and it plays great as do all of Mike's cues.

So, The One, you're finally giving it a try?

for TheOne

TheOne -

Didn't I buy you and the rest of the Australian contingent a round of drinks the other night? I'm pretty sure that was you and your friends...

I'm the crazy chick that was talking to you guys at the bar...with the Predator pool case...running back and forth between you and my friends at the other end of the bar.

Anyhow...it was cool meeting you and the others. Tell David and the others I said hello. Have fun in Sacramento!!!!!

All the best -

Reno open brackets hasn't been updated 24 hours..........

IMHO, in order for pocket billiards to gain momentum, as has been expressed on numerous posts in this forum, it needs to acquire a fan base.

Many of us have been to events and know how hectic the scheduling is and the activities keep one busy on the sidelines.

I remember last year when a major high-profile tournament occurred, and the promoters did not think it prudent or important to notify the print media, to include AzBilliards, with any updates until well after the tournament concluded.

Some of the diehard pool fans are members of AzBilliards Discussion Forum. I would think it advantageous for a promoter to keep the POOL public notified of any happenings. To not provide updates to the print media, to include AzBilliards, is sad. I do realize how busy the TD's and staff are keeping these events running smoothly, but I would think that updating the pool public and EXISTING fan base would be an important task, one that should not be overlooked and/or forgotten. JMHO, FWIW.

You sure did Melissa, and I was dissapointed you weren't there the next night as promised so I could return the favour! We where going to drag you out with us to the fantastic El Dorado Bars. Maybe next time I can buy you that drink. I remember seeing you predator case because I have the same one except you ahd a rather fancy shoulder strap which made me jelous lol!

Anyway, well done in the tournament, I didn't see you play much as I spent the last 4 days partying too hard but your results speak for themselves.

It was nice meeting you, I will say hi to Dave etc for you

Cheers

LOL Rick, that damn train has been the source of much sleep deprevation and jokes this past week. I think we're all catching the bus to Sacremento on princible lol.

I almost slept through m first match as I didn't manage to sleep all night!

I found the best solution was to get wasted and role in around 8am and then you can sleep through anything :-)

I will look for you in Hard Times and say Hi.

Cheers
