Just to preface the events that unfolded last night...There's a new guy in town, apparently a pretty good player from what I had been hearing. Now, bear in mind I am not the best player but I like to play. I chatted the new guy up last week and the gist of the conversation was him telling me - and anyone else within earshot - about nobody in our town gambling, how he loved to play cheap sets, how no more local tourneys will let him play 'cause he's so damn good.

So, I'm thinking to myself that this guy's kind of self proclaimed the best in town. We should play and I say to said guy, "Would you like to gamble, I'll play some cheap sets with ya to see just how good you are", his reply was "sure", I said I'll catch you next time as I was on the way out.

Was at the hall on Monday night, had just finished up playing league and I noticed said fellow at the bar. I walked up to him and said that if he wanted to play some that I would in about 4 o'clock tomorrow. His response was "How are we going to play?" I told him "Even of course, were you expecting weight already?" He then said "How much?" I said, we can start cheap and go from there. His reply was "not worth my time"...okay, I simply replied "fair enough" and began to walk away. I made it about two steps before he bellows over my back " I'll give you lessons for $20 an hour though". I stopped and began to turn around...and reply that I had more money in my back pocket than he had in his entire bank account and he would not be getting a single penny of it....but, I didn't - the younger me would have - the older me shook my head and continued on my way home.

Now I understand why he was complaining that no one would play him, he's an a-hole. I have been around this game for many years, respect me, even if you have never played me. I just don't understand why some folks are so disrespectful yet it seems as though they feel like they deserve automatic respect from everyone else around them?

This made me laugh.

CHEAP SETS < $20 / HOUR

I really don't see where you come off thinking he is the a-hole. ?? He can't play in the local tourneys, and can't get any action. Then you ask him if he wants some, he says yes, and you find an excuse to duck out. What do you think he was thinking right about then??

Then, when you do come back, and he asks how you want to play, you give a smartaleck response and say that YOU won't give him any weight. You say something cheap, which odds are, he would have settled for eventually, but, he is an idiot if he doesn't try for more right away. Then, when you walk away, he knows that you aren't a player after all. (If he didn't already do some checking and find out if you were or not). Maybe he just decided that he would rather help your game and give you something in return, then just take your money. And, for that, he is an a-hole??

The whole thing could just as easily be interpreted that you were the a-hole. In reality, neither of you were trying to be one, so have a sit down with the guy and get to know him. You might like him, and maybe learn a few things along the way. If it turns out he is just full of himself, then you can go your own way.

Totally disagree if everything is as the poster stated. This guy is an A-hole (see my previous post about $20)

If he's the best in his town and is getting kicked out of tournaments, should he expect to get any weight unless he's playing a known pro?

I agree with this.

If he is so good that they won't let him play in tourneys locally, why should he expect to get weight?

This gambling stuff is so confusing...

I interpreted it as the guy was just being a cocky jerk.

A cocky jerk??? But, he's a poolplayer. There's no such thing as a poolplayer being a cocky jerk, is there ?

FWIW, some of the biggest a-hole, cocky jerks I've ever met in my life were poolplayers. OTOH, some of the nicest people I've met were also poolplayers. Rarely do we ever hear about the truly nice ones. All to often it's the a-holes that get the stories written about them.

The guy could be an A-hole, and the OP could be and A-hole, or they could both be B-holes, C-holes and so on...... How do you know what letter they have in their hole?

This is the problem with forums is that there is too much speculation. I think this is Neil's point. We can't form a real and accurate opinion from just reading something like this. If we were to hear the other gentleman's side of the story, I am sure it would sound very different.

In any case, I think we should just enjoy the game more.

You and Neil have a point but in this case I say the guy is an A-Hole based solely on facts.

1) He complains about not getting any action and that he LIKES cheap sets.

2) When you let him know you'll play him some (so at least he has that action) he's cool with it. Then the next time you see him he's not interested because it's not worth his time.

3) He says 20 an hour IS worth his time if he can teach you. If he's so good then playing even should be donating to him anyway and he would most likely get much more than 20 an hour.

I know facts can change with different sides of the story but I believe him complaining, him saying he'll play and then changing his mind later, and him making the comment that angered the OP should all be true.

This leads me to believe this guy is an A-Hole without needing to hear his side of the story. He just wanted some 100% guaranteed money and didn't want to play for it. If he shoots so well most likely he'd be all over taking the OP's money and if he was busy at the time he could have rescheduled to find another time more convenient to take his money (if indeed he plays so well).

WARNING: SPECULATION CONTENT!

There is a chance that he is flat broke and couldn't even afford a cheap set. If so, he probably is unemployed or makes minimal dough at best. So, to protect his ego, he says it's not worth his time, but needs 20 an hour. Hum, go figure.

If I know one thing...if you are trying to "sell" your services, the first thing you don't do is belittle and alienate your potential client. In fact you do the opposite and befriend them.

It sound to me that he is a bitter player that expects the world to hand over their money to him because, in his eyes, he is so great. He needs to grow up and understand that there is a market value for everything, even pool. He is still an A-hole.

END SPECULATION

At the end of the day I don't think either really wanted to gamble. Where there's a will there's a way.

Okay, now you've let off a little steam. This isn't the first or last time you'll be woofed at. Clear your head and make a game with him. Some of my best buddies came from matching up. Only one way to find out.

Best,
Mike

This....if you love pool and are hard up for action because nobody will play you, and you are basically better than everyone, and somebody offers to play you even and donate early......why not take it?

Dude = nit
