No. Right now I am in full one pocket learning mode and am only playing with people who can beat me. I do not know how well Rhea plays one pocket but I have a group of very good players helping me right now so no need to match up with random people. Rhea has a very good person steering her around. We are on different paths that happen to be crossing at the moment.

Here's the point. There is a difference between freedom and care free. Rhea is pretty much totally care free at this point in time. However, her actual freedom to do as she pleases is quite limited.

That's a philosophical question. Is freedom the ability to move or the means to do it?

Obviously if Rhea wanted to go play in China she could move in that direction slowed only by her means. However a millionaire with a felony conviction has the means but no ability since he lacks a passport.

So to me freedom to move is exactly that by whatever means are available to include self-propulsion.

People manage to travel the world on little to no money. They exercise their freedom and the currency they use is their ability to form relationships. Thus who is more free, the person who can pay their own way around the world when they are flush or the one who can move around world when they are broke?

I mean tonight I dragged in five boxes of cases and set them up and carried on about six conversations about them without selling one - when what I really wanted to do was practice one pocket only. That's work and I have an obligation to my family to do my job selling cases. I am tied to those cases and to Jamacia Joe's for the duration of this tournament so that I can answer any and all case questions. That's not free.

Rhea can pick up and go to any pool room in the city as she pleases, gamble at her whim, or choose to stay in the room all day if she wants to. That's way more free than I am. I might make more money selling several cases than she does but I guarantee I will have had to WORK to do it.

But you don't understand, John....Kim knows how Rhea should live more than Rhea knows.

You should be bowing down to his brilliance. The fact that he's never done what Rhea is doing and doesn't know shit about her doesn't matter. He just knows how everyone else should live. He's brilliant that way. It's a gift, I suppose.

Well that's about the worst math I've seen. I don't know anyone in the world that calculates their pay based on what they have left after all of their expenses.

I spent 10 days in Vegas a few years back for the VNEA tourney. I got on the plane with $2700 and came home with $3100 after food, rooms, gambling, transportation, etc. I looked at this as a huge success, not like I barely made $40 a day.
 
Today is my birthday. Last night I finished 5th place.

After the tournament Wendy asked me if I wanted to gamble with her friend Christina.

Christina's steakhorse put her in the box for $100 a set. I froze up $500 of my own money.

We played races to seven 9-ball on the small track diamonds. I won the first set and lost the next two. Then I hit a gear and won the fourth set. By now Jamaica joes was closing so now we headed to Chester's to continue.

Her steakhouse paid for my room at the motel and tipped Long $120 to stay open for us.
My gear had not faded. I beat her 3 more sets quickly it was only 3:30 am and they threw in the towel.

I treated my friend Joe to lunch and called my friend Tommy Tokoph to let him know how Oklahoma has been so far.

Can't wait to go to Nashville and Derby next month. Might see Gene there before heading to Arlington.

I think they were going to that national chain of steak houses, Ruth Chris's Steak House to eat a steak.

It's a good thing no one was staking Rhea because she got to keep all of the winnings in that match.

That's how I calculate it. Revenue minus expenses equals earnings. That's how everyone I know does it.

How else would you calculate earnings?
 
Rhea survived for a week, played a bunch of pool and came out money ahead. At this point I'd call that a big win.
 
Rhea had Christmas dinner at my parent's house tonight. We talked pool and folks she is doing fine. Many of you who know the road would honestly be impressed at the roster of stakehorses and steers she has accumulated. And in case any of you are reading her name as RAY like I was it's actually Ree-uh to pronounce it correctly.

Those of you who think she is ruining her life would probably love to have the freedom to go any direction she chooses, with friends and plenty of pool opponents willing to match up wherever she goes. She isn't beating the world yet but is playing and gambling and living the life she wants without hurting anyone.

She also has some good ideas about how to have a solid tournament with a broad base to draw from.

That's how you calculate profit, not your hourly wage. When you fill out a mortgage application, do you put how much you make a year? Or how much you have left after all your bills when they ask for your salary?

Earnings is profit (or loss is some cases). The number when you total up the red and black ink. Not just the black ink. Earnings is what you have at the end of the day after you settle up what you owe. Income or salary or wages that one puts on an application is NOT that number. If self employed, say a construction contractor that gets to keep all profits, that brings in $8 million a year in contract, but have to spend $7.85 million for operating costs supplies, insurance, labor, permits, equipment...you list $150,000 as how much you make a year, not $8 million.

Glad to see rhea's doing well.........

There are so many things that Rhea learned that are really hard to point out and explain. It's like monkey see, monkey do.

You live it and learn on the road. Real quick too because there isn't enough money to make mistakes.

But the biggest things that i can say she learned is having the eyes in the most correct position, play safe instead of selling out, but most important,

HOW TO WIN......................

She has all the desire in the world but if you don't know how to win it ain't gonna happen.

Desire with knowledge is like cake and ice cream at a birthday party.

They both work so much better together.

People and players everywhere were looking for a train wreck to happen with myself and Rhea. Guess What? The train wreck never happened.

From what I've seen in the last 4 months is someone going from 0 to 90 miles an hour in a unheard of short period of time.

Not only in playing ability but the mental part also.

Matching up is the key until you get to a very high skill level.

matching up is a skill all by itself.

Taming the road is the total package.........

I don't know how its done in the USA, but if you are in arrears with Revenue Canada, they won't consider a loan for anything until you take care of your Taxes.

Nothing to do with this thread but seeing how we drifted into wages, banks etc.

I guess it means that a lending institution, or anyone else for that matter, wouldn't consider Hustling Pool as a living. Even if they did, clearing 30 bucks at the end of 9 days isn't going to swing you anything but a free cup of coffee at the bank.

If at the end of this journey, Rhea decides to settle down and get a job, it will take some time working steady to qualify for anything.

If a lending institution asks you how long you have been at your present job and what you did previously, the answer of being free and playing pool isn't going to go over well.

At least in Canada, skipping town with a vehicle and not making payments is also going to show up on your credit record for 7 years there after.
