Right-handed shooter that's left eye dominant???

I'm a righty but left eye domy, I never shut one eye to shoot because I loose my depth perception. I shoot with my chin directly over the cue or to the left of the cue with the left side of my face aiming more towards the shot and my chin tucked to the right side. Just what I do, hope this helps and good luck with the bonding!

Thanks to all for the high-quality replies, links and suggestions!

There's enough material here to keep us busy for quite awhile.

Thanks again!!!

For what it's worth, Gary Spaeth, 4 time world bank champion, was a righty that was left eye dominant. That little fact doesn't really help your problem any but at least you'll know that it's not really a handicap by any means.

My daughter is home from college for the summer and we have been playing some pool.

Her main problem is her poor aiming. I was hoping that with some more table time and some help from me she would get it figured out.

Last night, I finally tested her to see what her dominant eye is and found that she is left eye dominant. She shoots right-handed so I told her to try and get her left eye over the cue to see if that helped. It didn't seem to make much immediate difference.

Now that we've talked about it, she says that when she aims she automatically closes the right eye. She also says that for some reason she has difficulty closing her left eye.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom or suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

PS. I know this topic has been touched on before but I didn't find anything more than passing references in various posts. So, please forgive the possible repetition.

I am Left Handed, Left Eye Dominant (strong left eye), do everything except shoot a Rifle or Shotgun Right Handed. Think I have been able to adapt fairly well to the right Handed Rifle/ShotGun thing, as a Child I participated in the NRA’s Rimfire (.22 CAL.) Junior Riflemen program, and won ever medal possible in the program, as a Lefty Shooting Right Handed.

How did you fix your issue

The bottom line is whether she sees the shot accurately. Have her play short straight-in shots and see if she lines up along the correct line, with the cue stick pointed through the centers of both balls. If she doesn't have that part right, I think it is the first thing to work on.

I'm left eye dominant and right handed. Much of what has been said above does not apply to the way I aim or my perception when shooting. I was unaware of the issue for the first 15 years or so that I played but then a friend asked me why I always lined up on the left side of the cue ball. I was over sometimes as much as a whole tip but it looked like the center of the ball to me. Yes, I could be off that much and it would still appear to be the center. I had subconsciously learned to swerve from left to right on the final stroke to hit the cue ball in the middle.

I wish I had had access to an instructor who knew what he was doing back then, but I don't think fundamentals were really understood or taught very well in this country in the 1960's. Just a video would have helped with the diagnosis, but the technology was not there yet.

I may have the same issue...how did you wind up correcting?

If you take a look at these three pics, you can see that I position my head so the cue is a little to the left of the center of my chin.

I do this on most shots. You can tell because after an hour or so of shooting a blue strip of chalk starts showing up on the lefct side of my chin. :-)

I shoot left handed and I'm right eye dominant. I shoot with my chin to the right of and below the shaft and if the position on the table won't allow me to get my chin that low then I still shoot with my head to the right of the shaft.

I went through years of twisting my head this way and that trying to find the way that things looked right and the balls would go in the pockets and I have no idea why in the world having my chin clear to the right of the shaft would work. That puts my dominant eye about 4" to the right of the shaft but it's by far the most accurate I've ever shot. Maybe it's just because I've finally shot enough shots that I'm beginning to see the line/angle/ghost ball ... which I do. Looking at the shot with primarily my left eye and I see the shot... I just see it as soon as I step behind the cb.

BUT....... Geno's Perfect Aim DVD may be changing all that. I'm working on his suggested method of aiming. We'll see how it works out. I'll say this, after a few days I'm not dis-satisfied. So far... so good. I think my aim on thin cuts is better with Geno's methods. On just simple 20 degree to 80 degree cuts I'm not sure if I prefer my old way or his methods. Too new to tell.

But.... I think that's what this gal needs... i.e. Get Genomachine's dvd or take a lesson and get it straightened out.

I haven't fully. I work on carefully looking at the tip on the cue ball and coming straight through on the final stroke. Check for unintended side. I've been working on it since 1980.
