Road Trip

You can still make money shooting pool in bars with in 10 sq. miles of your bed. Not big money, but if your smart about it you can make a blue-collar paycheck a week. Most of the road men now are lucky if they pull that down after splits with stake horse and other expenses. Johnnyt
I agree Johnny, when I lived in NY I would drive anywhere 25 miles from my home in any direction and would gamble in small bars, usually road house bars and make okay cash doing it.For 3 years I played pool and poker and got by but not ahead, some nights I could go out with a $20 in my pocket and come back with $200-$300.It was not uncommon to get into a game for $20 a rack and sometimes $50-$100 a game 8 ball but it usually was with some unsavory characters such as dealers but they paid and I never had a problem. You might go do a loop as I call it and hit a bunch of bars and just score some drinking money or gas money but it was a free night out most of the time. :)

You just wrote the story of my life on Long Island from 1957 to 1980, and I made good money at it,stayed buzzed, and even gave my wife about 25% of my winnings.

I still think it can be done today if the player can shoot around B speed and has some street smarts. As you said, the money was playing the pimps, drug dealers, and anyone in or tied in with the rackets. What breaks most of them is getting into the wrong games because their not patient, or they just need to be in action. I went for the money not the glory. Johnnyt

99% of my money comes from matching up right now. I'm not afraid to do some cleaning up for a bar or a pool hall to make 5-10 bucks here and there whenever my bankroll gets short.

I am 32, but I appear to be in my mid 20s which also helps me get easier action occasionally.

Man...I'm 30, a wife, a kid, a house, two cars....a full-time job..............where did it all go so wrong???? I want to go on the road!

Better be good with a bar cue. It will be your best friend on table and for personal defense.;)

Good luck to ya.

I would say I matchup well and dont put myself in a bad game and if I know the game is bad or questionable I am not betting much.I played like a low B player then, now I am a solid B and can hit B+ when I am in stroke. On a bar box people would think I was a hustler,I would say I am not hustling you because I am not hiding anything,I play okay and dont hold back.I'm not saying I did not play on the lemon so to speak, hanging balls and leaving them no shots was the way to go,making them think you were the luckiest guy they met.I dont know my way around Phoenix since I have been here a year but would like to hit the bars and play some,I need to find a road partner for the loop though as I used to travel solo but knew people where I used to live so it did not matter as much. Here is a picture of me in a roadhouse bar, notice the house cue,my horrible looking bridge which players like to point out as being bad has actually gotten me quite a bit of action.

Yes a pool cue was good years ago. I always carried a gun myself. About half the joints I hustled in were full of guns. Which wasn't all that bad if you saw it coming and pulled yours first. I always tried to buy a few drinks for the bartender and a few big guys that I saw people respect or give him a very wide berth while walking by him if I was playing for a good amount. I also tried to get as many of the people in the bar to like me. The one thing I learned very early on was to not take my Harley hustling. I don't know how many on here remember the kick-starters on a Harley, but if the weather got a little cool it could take you many kicks to fire it up. Good for building strength in your right leg, but not good when making a getaway. I bought a 1958 Triumph 650 brand new for $1190 in 58. Johnnyt

Big Red or Doublemint? I like Bubble Tape myself, but I don't see how gum would help when everyone else had a gun!!!:grin-square:

Haha, the places I go they have no clue of AZBilliards and probably think Cuetec is the best playing cue in the world along with Pabst being the beer of choice.

Pabst is the best beer, usually costs like $1.50 when everything else cost $3.00, and I am sure it won a first place ribbon somewhere.:D

Hello pool world.

June 9th 2008, I decided to try to take up pool as more than just a hobby.
It has now become my obsession. I read about the game, practice daily, get into as much action as I can afford as often as possible, enroll in tournaments everytime I can afford the entry fees.

The majority of the time I play like a C player though. And only when I get into stroke which comes and goes I play like a B player.

I have no vices other than gambling, and I have restricted my gambling to pool and powerball.

I know with my current skill level I couldn't survive travelling the U.S. playing pool for a living. However I still feel compelled to try, and since I have no family, occupation, obligations, or responsibilities, I thought just maybe there might be someone else out there with the same desire.

I would like to find someone who already plays for a living or would like to give it a try that could be my mentor.

My car has 41 thousand miles on it and has excellent gas mileage 34mph.

I just feel that if a high C borderline B player can barely survive for 7 months on gambling winnings alone from pool and minor travelling between Missouri & Tennessee, then why couldn't a shortstop or an A player do much better than barely survive?

I've heard all sides of this and I couldn't blame you if you went either way.

Pool is not what it was 30 years ago. Money is a lot tighter and players are a bit wiser than in years past. When I was 25 it was nothing to hit the bars and scuffle up $200. It was no big deal. Now it is hard to beat anyone out of $200 anymore and now that $200 anin't worth $200. Gas has soared, motels have at least tripled, and meals have doubled at least and tripled in most places.

Even at that I never thought playing just small action was the way to play on the road. SUre, you needed it to cover the NUT and all, but you can't be afraid to take off the score. Those chances are fewer and farther between.

At the same time, if you want to be real serious about the game, there is no better training ground. When you are on the road it becomes your main focus without all the local distractions. You rely on your wit and learn very quickly what kind of Heart you have. When you get home, you realize just how boring home can be.

I wish you well and hope you find the right partner. You do though have to learn to rely on yourself and not expect your partner to do all the work. BUT,,,,,jump up and play in the right situation, not just to prve something to him. Don't do it out of guilt or ego. That will bring about losses and more importantly blown scores. Ego is a dangerous thing on the road.

I had a blast with it for years and years and now you couldn't get me out of the county but for different reasons. I hop you have half the fun I did.

Go for it!!! If you don't you'll always wonder. You'll have a blast. Be non assuming or arrogant. If you seem meek you don't have to fight your way out as often. Lewis said park close to the door, back in. Make notes, a mark will always be a mark.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I know a few guys

If you are interested, send me a PM. I know a player that might be interested. I agree with everyone here. If you don't want to scuffle for a few bucks to get by everyday, then stay home. I play horribly and yet still figure I won about $30,000+ cash in 2006. You do not have to play good to win, just good enough.

Like I said, I can call a guy that may be interested. PM me.

One thing I neglected to mention is that whether I stay in 1 location for awhile or move around makes no significant difference, because I do not live anywhere. I crash at rest stops in my car. I purchase motels when I can afford them. Even at the present moment.

Okay, here goes. It depends what your goals are. Wanna be a champion? Then you had better stick to playing champions. Wanna be a scuffler? Here goes:

Half of your time is FINDING the action. Most idiots won't lose more than twenty bucks. If you're lucky enough to find a "loser, " good luck laying it down if you're a true c player.

Expenses are a *****. Get used to sleeping in your car as a c player. (I've been robbed twice).

After finding action, it's all about matching up. Sometimes this takes days. Be patient. I once lost $30-50 four days in a row to finally get the owner to jump in at a g a set. I charged him. This is a lost art.

Smart.... get paid. Ego.....get beat. I origined that one.

Best of luck.
