Rock and a hard place...

I just looooove these league situation questions !

When I am scoring a match, I usually say, "call your pocket," right after the shot made before the money-ball.

You did it right. Trying to call that ball with a crowd congratulating her wudda made you look like "a douche".
Good call to just let it go.

Is that allowed? Or would that be considered coaching???

Nope, at least not in APA.
Advice on stuff like how to hit the ball or what shot to play, etc. coaching.

Reminding people of the rules, notifying them of fouls, which group they are, etc.
is not considered coaching.

I was never clear if it was considered coaching to notify people how many balls they need
in a 9-ball match. I think it's not but often we end up burning a time out to be safe.

Here's the rulebook's info on it:

Some examples of what is not considered coaching are telling a player which
category of balls is his, reminding him to chalk up or to mark the pocket when
shooting the 8-ball, or telling a player a foul has occurred. Comments such as
“good hit” or “nice shot” or answering a player’s question concerning rules is
not considered coaching. Any comments made to a player when it is not his
turn at the table are not considered coaching

This is the shot she was left with...sorry for the shitty drawing here but I think you'll get the gist...

Thanks for the replies...

I do agree that she needs to know the rules because someone else might call her on something like that...the funny part is she is the team captain. The other players are her daughters and they are worse with the rules than she is lol....their BCA ratings are 2's and 3's....They play just to get the family together for a couple of hours on league nights...

Let me ask you silly questions:

Forget about the rules about calling a non-obvious shot. Did the ball go in the hole that YOU would have called had you been in her shooting shoes?

What did you teammates do when she kicked it in?

When you say "little old lady" but earlier said "safe on the gal", that painted two different pictures. Not that it matters, but if I were telling the story on here, I'd make up something about how hot she is.

Freddie <~~~ but that's just me

I would of just tried for a hit and to leave the cue ball at the other and of the table...Im not even sure that I would have gone one rail to try the hit..the way the CB was glued to the 13 she had to go straight down table with left english to make the hit...I think I would of gone 3 rails just to get the natural angle of getting to the 8ball...

As far as making up something about how hot she is ...She's a 10 if your into 65-70 year old Navajo native women with half their teeth  ....
My teammates (especially my team captain) gave me a little bit of shit for not calling her out but understood that we would all look like assholes as a team if we made a stink about it. All in all my post was more of a rant than a question but I do appreciate the feedback...

Amazing anyone could make a ball on that crappy ass table!

I am inclined to say that shot is impossible, definitely not obvious!

that kinda reminds me of a situation in a 9 ball match about a month ago.

my opponent played a safe with the cue ball darn near the jaws of the top left corner pocket. i was on the 5 and it was on the same side of table against the rail 2 diamonds away with 2 balls between them.

i had to kick across side to make contact with it. after linning up i decided to try to make it either in the right side pocket or right bottom corner depending on where the cueball made contact with the 5.

i jacked up and with top left english hit the cueball at warp speed. the cueball come back across table and just caught the side of the 5 sending it down the table along the rail into the lower left corner.

every one watching said damn what a shot and started laughing .... every one except my opponent that is. he was muttering g' damn lucky m'fer .

my eyes bugged out on that shot but i quickly regained composure and proceeded to get on the 6 like i had just made another every day routine shot.

some days the pool gods are with you and other days they are against you.

I sure hope you don't take this as an insult, but when I end up in a situation like this I just let it ride because ultimately, I blame myself for letting a player that is ranked much lower to even get a shot on the 8 ball.

I'm sure it was a great safe on your part and was a very low percentage chance for her to get out, but based on your drawing there really isn't any other place she would of called it, and once again, she never should have been shooting at the 8 in the first place.

I dont take that as an insult at all...It was just one of those racks ya know?...She broke and it felt more like a game of straight pool than a game of 8-ball...I swear every time she would miss she would tie my balls up...I would shoot a breakout and somehow they would just group back together...I felt good about the safe...my nine was just above the side pocket and her 3 ball was a duck in the corner pocket where the cue ball ended up...I shot the 9 into the rail and caromed her 3 in with good speed and hooked her on the 13....the 9 ended up cross side (i wish it wouldnt of dropped but I was only worried about controlling the CB)

i want to agree with you but hey .... shit happens. good players have bad nights and bad players have good nights.

i once had an argument with a friend who stated lower levels can beat higher level players sometimes. i stated aint no way some one not as good as me can beat me. well when i joined league i faced the reality that it does happen, agree they are not supposed to beat you but it is possible.

let me give you my record over the last few weeks.

i am a 5 playing 9 ball.

win against a 5 38-11

win against a 4 38-30

lose against a 2 19 -25 this girl would make 2 miss leave me hooked. get bih make 2 leave me hooked get bih make 2 leave me hooked. a long ass game that i was glad when it was over

win against a 7 38-40

win against a 4 38-20.

like i say every one has good nights and bad nights.

i was dead last in top gun last month but with the win streak i have been on lately i have moved up to 4th place and with 4 weeks to go i hope i come in 1st. unless i face another damn lucky 2.

A blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while. I think it speaks highly for your character that you let her keep it. You don't want to be known as the guy that kept a little old lady from getting her nut

When you put it that way I shoulda taken the win...I dont wanna be known as the guy that would give the little old lady her nut....LMFAO!!!!

Well done'. Pat on the back to you Sir.
Being good people is far more important than any single game at league night.
You made her day and that moment will probably stay with her forever.
If you had taken the game, that moment may have stayed with you forever too, but in a much less positive way.

So I'm at league tonight and we're playing a team that almost always comes in dead last in our BCA league...I play a safe on the gal and she is forced to kick the full length of the table at the 8 ball...As she gets down on the shot she's chanting "please just hit my ball, please just hit my ball"...She never calls a pocket, shoots the shot and makes a wonderful hit on the 8 but kicks it in the corner pocket. (It was obvious that it was not intentional). The rest of the bar (other league teams on the surrounding tables) erupt with applause and commence congratulating her on the amazing shot... I really wanted to take the win because it was my win, but I held my tongue and congratulated her on the shot and shook her hand.

Ok I get it, it's just a game of pool but the team I'm on has a legit chance of winning and getting a shot at going to nationals. We're neck in neck with the other top team so every win counts. On one hand I dont want to let my team down and on the other hand I would of felt like a douche calling out a little old lady about not calling a pocket. (that is likely one of the only wins she'll have the whole season)...I'm torn about the descission I made to let her take the game...

To me it's really simple if you knew that she was going for that pocket then it's a no brainer to accept the bad beat and let her have it. I know that there are rules are rules guys that are adamant that you would not be wrong to call her on it but we both know that the right thing to do was let her have the win.

I'd rather be known as the guy who let it slide than the guy who took it away from her. You did the right thing in my opinon and I'd be proud to be your teammate.

As one of the top league players around here some of my best moments are when a very low level player defeats me no matter the circumstances. Sometimes in a single game of pool you are just dinged by the dangling dong of destiny. The joy they feel way surpasses anything I have ever felt all the other times when I beat them. Also by being genuinely gracious it minimizes their gloating. :)

Nice call.

JC
