going to be in seattle here in the near future ... staying downtown at the best western pioneer square hotel. what all kinds of rooms are within walking distance to this place? maybe say a mile to two mile radius? or so ... i could go farther but would need to hail a cab.

i found a couple places online ...
temple billiards, belltown billiards, and garage billiards ...

any advice on these places?

Their is a place called Bell Town Billiards that should be pretty close, but I am located in Tacoma so I am not certain exactly where the Best Western is located.

I know all three places. Temple Billiards is very slow and very social, Belltown is very upbeat, and very expensive, but great Italian food. Jillians isn't to far from the Best Western and I'm sure you've heard of them. The Garage Billiards is very reasonable, I just don't care for the Rebco 9ft'ers there. If you like to play for a little something your best bet is to catch a cab up to Dr. Cues in Lake City. It's about 15 min from downtown Seattle.

i might just have to check out dr. cue's when i'm up there. i'll be there the week of march 11th thru 17th or so. i wont have a whole lot of time to get out since its a school related trip (mandatory trip for my architecture design studio here at Kansas State) but i'm sure we'll have some nights to go out and check out the town.
Are cabs pretty expensive up there to get around by? Specifically like from the BW to Dr. Cue's?

I have also heard of Jillians. I had a copy of Playing Off the Rail but gave it back to a friend about a week before i found out about this trip or else I would of pulled some names out of the book to see if they're still around...

anymore good rooms to check out and maybe look for and/or play a little action at?

I would not recommend Belltown Billiards unless you are a 25-yr old kid with a lot of money - I live within walking distance and once was enough. Also, it's very unlikely you'll find anyone to shoot with. The Garage is just as close to the Best Western and you can grab a cab or bus there easily - much better kept tables and more reasonable prices. Jillians is nice, but further away. Like Cobra said, Dr Cues is the place for more serious shooting, but no alcohol and expensive to get there. I've never been to the Temple.

Unless things have changed since I lived in WA, Dr. Cues is the ONLY place to consider checking out. It's the stone cold nuts as far as WA pool is considered. It's the main action place in the state. Doesn't matter what the cabfare is there. Pay it, just for the chance to see a few NW champions match up. Plus, WA players are friendly enough you'll probably find someone to give you a ride back to your hotel.

Players table is closest one to the desk. Unless it has changed, no hard breaks on that table. In fact, may be classified a One Pocket only table.

Note: Be VERY careful matching up One Pocket in WA. There's quite a few guys who move like ghosts in One Hole, and shoot well enough to put 3 packs on yah in 9 ball.

I have lotsa good memories from Dr. Cues. It's a player's hall. The only place I ever liked more in WA was the 211 club, unfortunately closed.

Did I mention I picked up both Winning One Pocket and Shots, Moves, and Strategies for $50.00 apiece at Dr. Cues, back when they just came on the market?

I know, I know.. You hate me.

Here's your table 1: http://axis-734c81.axiscam.net/view/index.shtml

For that matter, out of Seattle you've also got Harvey's Billiards in Renton. Players that go to Dr. Cues bounce back and forth between both places depending on who's got the action going on. And for eye openers, there's the Parlor in Belleveue which is the newest pool room to open here...4 1/2 million dollars worth and I believe 42 tables.

i go to dr cues almost every day, love that place, owners are really cool too. The Parlor is fun but definately more of a trendy place, good for takin a date to.

Manwon runs a great place in Tacoma, if you're in the mood for a 30 minute roadtrip, clean true-rolling tables and nice tight pockets. He's knowledgable and also a hellova nice guy when you're in his hall/shop.

Dr. Cues is awesome, especially if you're looking for action, great tables, alot of good players, and a pool oriented atmosphere. Great Tuesday tournys. (It's my favorite since its close to me AND catored to PLAYERS as opposed to drinkers)

Jillian's has some dirty tables with sloppy rails and bucket-pockets, but quite a few serious players and cool people like to shoot there and hang out on weekdays since it's comfortable (on weekends it turns into an annoying "club", dancing, loud DJ, drunken jerk-faces constantly walking infront of your shots en-route to the bathroom. If you go, go during a weekday, and introduce yourself to the people who will most likely be playing on table one (tables are better mantained downstairs), they'll probably be friendly people. It wouldn't be hard to ride up to Jillian's from BW for approx $1.25 busfare.

Throw me a PM when you're in town.

thanks for all the info guys. i'll def. let you guys know when i'll be up there and we can maybe meet up and shoot some stick. i wont have my sticks with me up there unfortunately :( so i'll have to man the ugly stick. :P hopefully i can find a decently straight one with a small tip to shoot with ... anything over a 11.5 or 12mm looks like a tree trunk to me anymore...

Hope to meet up with you then. I recommend Harvey's or Dr. Cues as well. City Lights and Full Splice Billiards in Tacoma are good for getting a game too. Let me know and I would be happy to take you around.

Linda

I'll have to check out some of these places while I'm back for the holidays. Any other places south of Seattle? I'll be in Federal Way and Vintage Billiards is right down the street from my parents place, so I've mostly gone there.

I'm sure

That using Mapquest and Google, you can locate all the places and even find out what Cabs charge up there to estimate your transportation costs to each one. Or just rent a cheap car.

It's even easier in Seattle - if you know the street intersection of your origination and destination, you can use "Trip Planner" to get the bus schedule, etc. There is also a phone number where you can call for the same information.

Does Harry Platis play at Dr.Cues ? - or if not, where does he play ?

Thanks, Ghost

Harry usually plays at Uncle Jacks in Lynnwood. He just played Corey Deuel last week and I believe he won.

Corey and HP played at Dr. Cue's. The spot was 10-5 or 11-5. Harry won.

A few days before, Corey and JD played. Spot was something like 9-6 or 9-7. JD won.

No need for a cab from anywhere near the Space Needle to Jillian's... definitely within walking distance... ~4-5 blocks... maybe less depending on which side of the Space Needle your hotel is.

Here's a link to a Yahoo map of the area... Jillian's is depicted with an "A" symbol in a black square with pointer arrow... and the Space Needle is identified on the map.
