For anyone who still needs a room...you can get 2 FREE nights at the Reno Sands Regency. It's kind of a dump, but ok just to stay at night. Anyway, especially if you have a car to get to the Hilton, it's a good deal....you will get 2 free nights, and Sunday through Thursday, the rate is only $27/night and $64 Fri. and Sat.

Call 1-866-Fun-Stay (866-386-7829) and mention code SUM2F06.

How much of a "dump" is the Sands? Is it worst than the Riv in Vegas? Is there any pool?:D

Thank you so much for the info.

Much appreciated.

The Reno/USPPA tournaments are held there. Mike says the Riv is the 8 and the breaks better than the Sands. :p

Go to http://www.sandsregency.com/

They have a virtual tour there. If you mean a swimming pool, yes they do. This is taken from their website:

Over 800 spacious rooms in three connecting towers
Largest standard rooms in Reno
A variety of dining choices including Tony Roma’s, Mels Diner, The Buffet,
Cabana Café and Arby’s
Largest outdoor swimming pool complex
Penthouse Health Club free to all hotel guests
Complimentary airport transportation - pick-up at airport once an hour on the half hour
(6:30 a.m. – 11:30 p.m.)
Free garage and surface parking
Wireless internet access and high speed connection in Empress Tower (fee applicable)
Full service 24 hour casino Beauty Shop, Bike and Ski Shop and Wedding Chapel on premises
12,000 square feet of meeting space

It is also 2 miles away from the Hilton, so if you don't have a car, I don't know what that would translate into. Go here for more info, or click on one of the other casinos closer to the Hilton. http://www.casinocity.com/maps/index.cfm?PropertyID=52600&pagename=map

I stay at the Sands every 6 months for the USPPA/Reno open tourneys. It's not to bad at the rate mentioned above. There's nothing fancy about it, but it's not a dump. There's 2 pool halls within walking distance; one is open 24 hours.

Coupon

As far as I know, you need a flyer that gets mailed to you in order to get the two free rooms. When you check in, they will ask you for that flyer. If you don't have it (which happened to me once - I forgot it), they will make it very difficult to get the room.

Maybe the policy has changed, but if you are going to try this, I suggest you ask what you'll need when you check in.

Still the same policy. They will take your reservation by phone and guarantee it by credit card. Then if you do not have the postcard coupon with you at check in they will increase your rate to $64 a night unless you are a qualified rated player with the Players Club. They will not budge at check in - I've experienced it. Ferenc Szoni and I have traded letters on this little detail.

They will tell you this when you make your reservation if you ask.

Sorry, I didn't know that. I have an extra one if someone wants it, but the only clean one I have is the one addressed to me. The other one, Mike's, I wrote all over with confirmation numbers, etc. :(

The Sands is pretty good value, large rooms with large beds in a fairly psychedelic theme!

You might want to check out the website of the IPT, it seems the Hilton is no longer the Hilton!?

The Sands is no palace, but I think it is quite unfair to call it a dump!

Especially considering they have supported 3 major tournaments a year and 2 amatuer events for almost 20 years.

The Riviera is most definitely not a prize either, but is is not the "Gold Spike" in downtown either (dump for sure).

Sands Coupon

Also, at check in, you have to be the person who the coupon is addressed to - so I don't think it does any good to give the coupon to someone else unless you go with them and check in for them.

They have been extremely supportive of pool for the past 15-20 years, and while it's not luxury at all, it's probably in the 2 1/2 out of 5 star range.

Thanks-Ill check it all out. Still hoping for a better airfare though.

Good for Rachael. Guess she really likes Reno.

A friend of mine gave me a real negative review on the whole town. Dirty, beggin vagrants all over etc but that wont stop me.

I really need a quiet hotel where i can sleep til noon. I still cant believe these hotels where all the doors slam shut and you hear all the hall noise. The Mirage was my biggest nightmare. People think Im kidding when i tell'm i checked out and went to the Motel 6. There were more hookers in that Motel 6 than the Mustang Ranch but when i closed the door, I didnt hear a peep.
I just cant operate without sleep like the young'ns anymore. You sure the Peppermill is for me?

Edit- Peppermill too expensive on the weekendVagabond, Remember I haven't worked but 6 months in 6 years. Unless i plan on dying soon, I gotta keep travelin on the cheap.

I meant no disrespect. I haven't been there in a few years and see on their website that they had an overhaul. I said 'Kind of a dump' meaning it is certainly not going to be up to a lot of travellers standards, however, for IPT purposes, most people are going to be at the venue all day watching pool, and sleeping at night. The Sands is certainly sufficient for that.

And yes, they have supported pool for many years, and that is actually how we got the coupons, so I thought I would put it out there for everyone else to support them. However, seems like no one else can take advantage unless they get the post card mailed to them. :o

The property was sold and a major redo is planned, but it's still the Hilton for now. The IPT rate of $99 at the Hilton is pretty good compared to the other on-line rates I found (for the Hilton), which were all about $199 per night. I'll be there starting about the last round on Friday.

You are from leisure class and u do not need to work.
I did not realize that the tournament is in Hilton. For the covenience it offers I usually prefer to stay in the same hotel where the tournament is held.Hilton may be your best bet.

Even though i have booked a car and a hotel (don't ask), Reno doesnt look like too promising. The flights from New York are just torture-nothing direct at all, leaving at 5am,or going backwards to Atlanta or long layovers etc. It's doubtful but i will keep looking.

Inspite of the layovers u still can enjoy the trip.Who knows in your layovers u may meet a nice girl inthe cocktail lounge.:D

Linda,

I called to make res. and mentioned the code. They said I have to present the promotion letter when checking in to receive that rate? She said it stated that on the letter...

Any ideas???

Thanks!

Hi Rick,

I am fresh out of ideas. Did you ask them how you could get a coupon? We haven't been there in years and still get them. I can't give you our extra one because they check on the names, with ID. I think their normal rate is $64, so that isn't too bad anyway. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
