Anybody ever used this idea before? Cuts faster with a better finish.

i have thought about trying that before, but i doubt it can cut faster than 6 blade slot cutter.more blades=fast cut.

I thought about it.....

I had considered trying that type of cutter, but thought that the additional contact area might actually cause chatter.

What brand do you use and what are the specs of that bit?

I was sick of the chatter and tried that bit. It cuts perfect, you could seal and send. I make the final pass in a little over a minute, lightly sand with 320, 600, seal.

I thought about one of those in a router table to do initial
cuts if you start with squares instead of dowels.

Less chatteer sounds good. Do you think perhaps the cutter profile
somehow helps stablize the shaft better?

What kind of setup are you cutting on?
How much do you take off on that final 1 minute pass?

Whatever you're doing -
'lightly sand with 320, 600, seal' is pretty impressive'

I guess I need to try that.
I can do 6 inches per minute with a two blade straight router bit but there are those tiny lines (about .001" deep) that need to be sanded out.

I use a 6 tooth 2" diameter cutter on my Taper/Shaper machine and it will taper a dowel down to 14mm tip size very quickly.
I have not tried it on the CueMonster for final taper cutting.

Ever notice that the slightest finger pressure on the spinning shaft will stop chatter? But I did not buy an automated machine to stand there with my finger on the shaft while it make its cut.
I was thinking some sort of a foam pad lightly touching against the spinning shaft to dampen vibration might reduce or eliminate chatter but have not come up with a way to do that yet.

I have a brand new Irwin Blue Diamond roundover just hanging on one of My pegboard walls. It's still in the package gathering dust. I originally bought It to knock the corners off of squares, but never did end up using It.

Maybe I should try It on My next shaft tapering session to see how It works.:)

Thanks for the info. I had thought of that idea before, just never tried It.

I am curious how long It would stay sharp for, even if It reduced chatter.

BTW, what size is the roundover bit Your using?

Will,

I purchased some sheets of silicone rubber gasket material to apply a tiny amount of pressure. It works very well. I'll send you some if you like. You might also notice that I also made a latching relay power box like yours. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

David, That is a neat idea.

The latching relay and a stop switch on the tail stock assembly are very handy mods. Too bad Unique dont offer that as standard equipment.
My Ryobi router switch needed attention (take apart and clean out) as dust got into it and it stopped working.
Looks like I might need to look into the KRESS routers soon.
Smoother than Ryobi? Faster? Quieter?

I found the $20 routers that Harbor Freight sells are almost an exact fit for the Taper/Shaper holder.
They are a few thousands smaller in diameter but a layer or two of masking tape works just fine. Cant beat the price!

I know exactly what you are trying to control with the rubber strips.
It looks like that setup might do the job.

I'm very pleased with the Kress in every way. My deutsch is a little shaky, but it looks like it may have a ten year warranty. I bought this one from Europe, but if Lee has a good price on them I may scatter a few more around my shop.

you get what pay for with those cheap routers we liked the kress so much
i became a dealer for the money you cant beat them ...

The Ryobi has so much less vibration than any routers I know.
You still need to wear earplugs but they are not quite as noisy.

Keep the Ryobi and the HB for hogging Will. Then use the Kress for final cuts.

True, they are cheap and not as well made as even the Ryobi but they work just fine on butts and roughing in shafts.
I need to talk to you about getting on of the Kress routers for finial cuts.

Will, I thought you already had the quiet spindle?

Sounds like a plan, Joey.
Really, my Ryobi is not all that noisy (or my hearing is shot).
It always runs smoother and quieter after I take it apart for cleaning about twice a year. But it is getting old like me and I know I cant keep it going forever. From what I hear the Kress is super smooth AND quiet.
Sounds like just what I should get.

The KRess is super smooth.
You'll have to make a Delrin tube to fit the Taper Shaper holder.
Kress is only like 1.750 shank while the Ryobi is like 2.750 iirc.
I might get a slower cheaper Kress too for toolpost mounting for slit sawing and threading.
