Rug Under the Pool Table

My 9' Brunswick Gibson table has a 13X 8 rug under it. I like it but I would probably go with 14' or 15' if you can find it in the pattern you want. It doesn't matter if only one foot is on the rug when you shoot and I don't think you'll be tripping on it. It's a tighly knit wool rug. The table stayed level after installation, no adjustment (no pads).

I am in the flooring business so i know what i'm talking about. If you put a pad between the rug and floor the pad will slowly compress meaning the table will never be level untill the pad completely compresses, if ever.

My crownIV took a year to compress a thin rubber back carpet. After that it hasn't moved in 10 yrs.

That's gorgeous...love the way the center square of the carpet matches with the legs placement of the table...and, my Gawd, what a nice table!
 
Great looking table Chris!! I've seen that photo before and it's always stunning!

I put an oriental rug under my Diamand and it has a pad under it. Never had any problems with leveling.;

That is far and away the nicest table I have seen!! That has to be a great wxperience every time you walk into the room and see that gorgeous wood and the simplicity of the table.

Thank you everybody! I am really happy with the table - with both the way it looks and the way it plays! Since it's part of our home decor, my wife picked the rug (I would have gone for less flowers).

i pretty much agree with rd3p's views on this. ive had all ways and currently have my table on ceramic tile over a cement slab. the things i havent liked in the last few years have been. one foot on one off. and with the tile if a ball does hit the floor it bounces. what i liked about carpet was mainly ball protection. but in no case was my table out of level because of pad or carpet. my friend has a GC on the second story of his home, sits on carpet/pad and has no leveling issues. so if your goal is to protect the wood flooring then put down a large carpet, if your goal is basically to enhance the look of where the table sits put a small carpet which doesnt exceed the perimeter of the rails of the table, and if your goal is just to protect the floor where the legs of the table sit, then put a sq.ft pad under each leg. one small issue with carpet is keeping it clean under the table, and in my case where the carpet was eventually nasty looking i had to take down the table to replace the carpet. hope some of these thoughts help. gerald
 
Update. I went with a 4 X 8 rug under the table. It works great for me and it is a very common size. I hope this helps.

9'x12' would be the smallest youd want with a 9 foot tablethat gives you 3 foot on the head and foot of the table(a foot and a half on each side...... and the table is only 4.5 wide so youd have 2 foot 3 inches sticking out on each side of the table...or stightly less depending on actual dementions of table

id say youd want to go with 12x15


12x18 would probably be perfect if you want to stand on the rug while playing the game
but a rug that size would cost at least a thousand,
and realisticly two thousand plus depending on how fancy of a rug you get

Agreed, I've got a 12x18 persian for my 9' table and it looks incredible. you are always on the carpet. be sure to get a thin nap rug, though in case you do have one leg off.

Prices can be all ovaer the map, but for a decent hand tufted rug this size on clearance somwhere (they always are!), you are looking at between $1k and $2k. Check homedecoratorscollection.com. For a hand knotted persian/oriental/Pakistan/India rug in 12 x 18, you are looking at minimum $3k and the sky is the limit......
 
Rug size aside, there is a good solution to solving/minimizing the "settling" of a table placed on a rug/carpet. I believe it was Glen that posted pictures of his system.....he cuts round pads out of some type of wood and drives a dozen or so roofing nails through the pads. The pads are placed under the legs with the nails protruding down through the carpet/rug. This way, the table isn't resting on the carpet but on the floor below it. This should minimize the "settling" of the the table as well as protect the carpet from becomming indented with the leg footprints. If it were me, I would say at least five feet all around the table to protect against any falling balls/ cues, AND have a rug pad for a cushion between the rug and the floor. The cushion makes a huge difference.
