S.A.M Method

instructors on this forum

Has anybody heard or use this method or technic in aim and shooting??

A handful of instructors on this forum use it. RandyG for sure, I think Scott Lee and Steve.

There are several threads discussing SAM but I'm not sure if a search will turn them up or not. SAM is a fractional aiming system and is learned in steps. From sitting in on one of RandyG's classes for a few minutes it seemed that one huge advantage was that SAM gives a student and teacher a concrete form of communication. A tip and a half of side often means something different to two people. SAM 3 or any SAM number always means exactly the same thing.

SAM stands for Supplemental Aiming System so obviously it isn't meant as the be all end all in aiming systems but when you get to where you are dividing SAM numbers into smaller fractions it does get very precise, or so it seems to me.

I asked because my instructor recieved a lesson form Randy's partner (forget his name) over a year ago and shared his papers and DVD with me.

Very interesting stuff. The combo shots he demostrated were unbelievable

You haven't looked at any of the SAM threads before? Not once?

I'll guess you get some information, LOL LOL

Wish Smorg was here. He'd say something really funny.

SAM provides a specific aiming point for 80% of your shots. It can be a very effective aiming method once you learn it. I have worked with students who would rather use another methos (ghost ball, contact, etc) and others who grab a hold of SAM and immediately see the benefit.
We don't tell students they must use SAM, but we offer it as an option, and a large number of students find it extremely helpful.

Im pretty much a NooB on here so no. I do have a double disc on this method and sheets explaining the method. Only problem is dont have any money atm to go to the pool hall and try it out. God i want to give this a GO!!!! GRRRRR

Hu...We have revised S.A.M. to now be called Stick Aiming Method...as opposed to ball overlap aiming methods. The cuestick is utilized to find the aimpoint on the OB, which is then directed at that point, through the vertical axis of the CB. SAM is a very effective process, once you have an accurate and repeatable set up and delivery system. As was mentioned, it can be utilized on nearly 80% of all shots, including cuts, banks, combinations, caroms and kisses...and provides a way to adjust for shooting with sidespin as well.

Funny:one of my students name is SAM! LMAO, so I always give him hell...I tell him to stick with his name and he will be ok. When he calls me, i answer "hows it going stick aiming method" He's picking it up fast too since there is no possible way for him to forget, less he gets amnesia and forgets his own name :)

Scott,

Thanks for the update. I have the old paperwork around here somewhere "S.A.M. is R.A.D." I believe. Sounds like there has been considerable revision since then.

S.A.M. is not a majic formula. Before Aiming one must have Alignment & Delivery mastered.

S.A.M. is a conversation between the target ball and the shooter. Recognizing S.A.M. is paramount for proper execution.

I will post more if needed....SPF=randyg

Hu...S.A.M. is STILL R.A.D.! LOL The only errors we can make are 1) Recognition; 2) Alignment; or 3) Delivery. That's why we focus so much on the delivery end first...and then alignment (of your body & cue, to the shot), and recognition (of the angle #)! BTW, I'll be down in LA in a few days. Let's try to have dinner again!

Jesse...Yes, I gave Dale a lesson in his home, up in NY. I am a student of, friend of, and colleague of Randyg. We teach the same concepts, and often team-teach the 3-day pool schools around the country.

Hi Scott;

That sounds like the same method that Joe Tucker uses instead of the old SAM. BTW, I really like Joe's "By the Numbers" concept to determine an aiming line.

When you coming out West?
