I am new to the site and want to buy a cue.
Is there preferred way to buy or a way to make a seller feel more secure about the sale?
Can you give me ideas on how to complete a transaction.
I have no references on this site, but I have 100% on Ebay..

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong area.

I dont think that you could make a seller feel more secure than sending
them a certified bank check or money order for the full amount of the
cue. When payment arrives, he/she will send you the cue. Most sellers
here accept Paypal, but charges incur there. Just communicate with the
seller to the best of your abilities, and I highly doubt you'll have much
trouble. Remember, itrader isnt foolproof, but a good number helps a lot.
Good luck with your purchase, and welcome to AZ. Dom.

I offer a money back guarentee on all cues I sell. If you aren't happy with the cue after you buy one from me, then you return it to me in the same condition as it was in when I shipped it and I will return your money less my shipping costs.

If they wont offer that, then I would question the quality of sale.

I treat people how I want to be treated, my ebay feedback on ebay is 126+, is 100% and I treat my buds here on AZ even better.

Other options is escrow with Scot at Proficient Billiards, and there is a guy on here that will do it for very small fee IMO.

I think that because most of the time, the buyer sends payment before the seller sends the goods, it's usually the buyer that is taking the risk, so being a new buyer probably isn't nearly as difficult as being a new seller. I would assume that most sellers would be happy with a mondey order/chashiers check. I don't know much about paypal, but it seems to me that it's set up to protect the buyer in more ways than it can protect the seller, so some sellers may even shy away from paypal.
As long as you as the buyer are willing to wait til the seller can confirm your payment before he/she actually ships your goods, then you shouldn't have a hard time finding someone willing to do business with you.

Sale Question

Tips for buying a cue:

(A) There is a "Sticky" post (post that stays at the top portion of the forum page) that is:

"Escrow.....escrow.....escrow "

This post offers to use a middle person - MARCUS - who get both the cash and the cue. Marcus examines the cue to ensure it is all it is offered to be. The cue does not get sent to the seller before the cash gets to MARCUS.

Search this forum - MARCUS is a top-notch seller who has done a large number of good deals. Using this service adds shipping and added cost, but is a reasonable way to buy a cue.

(B) Check the person's feedback to ensure they have been doing deals where the sellers have been happy. (Like feedback on Ebay))

(C) Ask if anyone knows that person and would recommend them one way or another.

(D) Do not send a cue till the seller has sent all the funds. Too many bad deals where the "check is in the mail".

(E) Many of the seller here actually have websites or a business where they sell cues. The last thing they want it bad reputation posted here on the forum.

(F) Consider what the cue's specifications are and reasonable tolerances for same. (Does a shaft that is 13.0 mm really make a difference if it is 12.985 mm? To some it might, to others it does not.)

As with anything, it is a gamble, but there are things you can do to minimize - but not completely eliminate risk.

I have bought some cues, looked at them closely when I took them out of the box, screwed them together, and hits some balls in with them.

Notice there was never any digital calipers or scales to determine weight used.

LOL...... I don't think I've ever asked about a tip on a cue I was buying...

To the original poster, if you see something you like, don't be afraid to make a post asking about other dealings with that person. People work hard for their money and need to make sure they aren't just "making it rain".

Good luck.

New???

You can depend on one thing if you use paypal long enough you will get hosed!! I would trust a total stranger with cash in the mail before I would use paypal again.
Always remember--->

NO PAYPAL !!!

4 or 5 years ago AZB was a much different place to buy and sell cues. Bad deals were almost unheard of...it was a much closer knit community than it is now, and it just didn't really happen.

These days are much different. There are some sellers here that I would not hesitate, for even a minute, to do a deal with. AZB is so much bigger now, and with that growth came the deadbeats and the scammers...pretty much the way that eBay was affected with it's growth. Now it is not so easy for many to buy and sell here. It is much more difficult for the newer members in particular, as they are so much more of an 'unknown' now, and after many bad deals, not as easily trusted....especially when the bad/banned members continue to come back here with new persona after new persona.

Some tips:

If you find something you must have, make your offer via PM.

If you make an offer, be prepared to follow-through with it should the seller accept. He/she has likely turned down other offers to accept yours, so it is bad form to leave them hanging.

Make sure you have asked and received answers to all your questions pertaining to a cue. Keep all correspondence concerning your particular deal, and do not dispose of until you are completely satisfied with your deal and the cue is received in good order and you have decided to keep it.

If, for some reason, the deal does go south on you...try to work things out with the seller via PM's, emails, or phone convo prior to starting a thread here about the deal. Many sellers will wish to work something out to keep their reputation here. For those who are only out to scam, you will have all that saved correspondence to back your side of the case.

Ideally, if a seller is within a reasonable driving distance, check out the cue in person whenever possible. Better to be out a few bucks for gas, than out hundreds to thousands for a bad cue deal. Additionally, it gives you a chance to see a particular cue is even right for you....it may look great, but not play to your liking. Also, there are some members here that may live close to a seller, and may offer to go check out the cue for you, and give you their assessment.

Do your homework.....ask other well-respected members about sellers you may not be familiar with....generally this is done via PM's. Also, look at their iTrader rating, although this is not a guarantee....it can be a great barometer. You can also do a member search, and read all the posts they have been involved in, to see if there have been any 'issues'.

Make sure that method of accepted payment terms is clearly understood and agreed upon by BOTH parties. Many are not accepting PayPal these days...however, I would suggest that if you are going to use PayPal, that you use a credit card as opposed to your bank account/PayPal account. At least in this way, should it all go south and PayPal will not cover the loss...usually your credit card will.

BTW...NEVER post discussions about a seller's pricing on a cue in their For Sale thread...it is considered extremely bad form. If you feel compelled to discuss the pricing, then start a new thread over in the Cue Reviews section, where it will not have a direct impact on their FS thread.

Lastly, if you are unsure about the deal, or just want it to go as smoothly as possible, pay a few dollars extra, (or see about splitting the fee with the seller), and use an Escrow service. In this way, the cue will be throughly inspected to make sure it is as stated by the seller...it also makes sure that the cue and monies actually make it to their intended destinations. It can make the entire process much less stressful for both parties.

I am sure that there are more tips others can offer, but this was the best I could do coming off of a hangover...LoL!

Welcome to AZB and best of luck with your intended future purchases!!

Experience

I am relatively new here on AZ. I have done only 5 deals and have done so mostly with those who have done their share of deals here on AZ. What gives me some of the biggest relief is talking to someone on the phone. The buyer/seller must always be prepared to give out their contact info readily and you must ask particular questions about the item.

Chances are, if there is a bad vibe you get from talking to the individual, stay away. Most of the times, you are able to trust people here, and it's a really rare thing to find in this world these days.

If you have anyone locally who is an AZ member, get in touch with that person and let them help you through the ropes. I had someone like that and he has been like a big brother to me.

The only way you're going to learn is to start contacting people on deals you like, and visit with them. Everything else is downhill my friend.

Good Luck
