Sarah Rousey Entered in the US Open

A great way to sell out the field and to add spectators and coverage of the event. It's a win, win, win, win, and many, many more wins. How can they go wrong?

I did not know that, but good to know. I thought Berry had once said he has never opened it up to women.

I hope my memory isn't off, but...wasn't that Straight Pool and not 9 ball (Jean playing)?

Very cool.

You better practice or you get more of what's in my avatar.

<------told her not to touch my cheesecake

Now Pooldawg has to hire you as Sarah's "assistant" for the week....each of her competitors that wins even 1 game gets a Justin "THUG" headlock!!

Congrats Sarah, and tear 'em up girl!!!!

I believe Jean played and did fairly well, 9-12th maybe? Someone should know that statistic here. I know she went on a rampage beating quite a few of the top players at that time.

jdx, I am not sure. PoolDawg took care of all of this. Maybe Mike could clear up your question.

Sarah

According to Wikipedia:

Balukas was initially entered in both the men's and women's divisions of the 1987 B.C. Classic, a nine-ball competition. After notable controversy (detailed below), she competed only on the men's side. Along the way she trounced Keith McCready 11–3 (at the time the 17th-ranked male player by money list, and who guest-starred as obnoxious hustler "Grady Seasons" in the 1986 film The Color of Money). Balukas finished in a tie for 9th place among many of the best players in the world.

That seems to be her best finish against the men. No mention of the US Open.

IIRC, in the early days of Barry's U.S. Open 9Ball event, there were both mens and womens divisions. There have been, until now, no female entries in the men's tournament. Thanks to Barry B. for making this possible, and best wishes to all competitors, male and female. May the best player win!

Eric...In the past, the 14.1 U.S. Open Championships (run by the BCA) held both mens and womens divisions. Jean was a several time champion in the women's division, but never competed with the men. Recently, Jasmin Ouschan, and a few other women have played in Charlie Williams' "World 14.1 Championship" events.

Congrats Sarah, now you need to get out to LA in May and play the 10 ball event to get some practice in before the 10 ball in Vegas.

Jean Balukas played in both the Men's & Women's event at the 1987 U. S. Open 9 Ball in Norfolk, VA. She placed 17-24 in a field of 52 Men and she won the Women's event of 16 entrants for $2,000. :)

This is a very nice thing to do Pooldawg ! Just one of the many things you do for the game besides being a loyal supporter of our great forum. Thank you so much for all you do.

Thank you everyone and a huge thank you to PoolDawg and Barry Behrman for making this possible. I am going to practice hard so I can at least give it my best.

I'm glad that women are allowed to play and hopefully this will help the women improve their game to the point of making pool a completely genderless sport in years to come.

Thanks again!!
Sarah

P.S. Cleary, in my old age I have upgraded to heels for pool playing and booster seats while eating at restaurants.

All of us here at the forum will be rooting for you Sarah. This is a great association, a great sponser and a great lady player. Take care of the Dawg. Good luck Sarah.

if i play you lil rat ill bust you lol

Wouldn't it be ironic to match up first round. If Chris wins no biggy but if Sarah wins a crow samich is on the menu ! lol

What great news.

Hats off to PoolDawg for sponsoring Sarah.

And, Sarah - you go get 'em.

I used to have a vhs tape from that event (someone just taped it from the stands) where Jean Balukas plays Larry Liscotti and absolutely drills him, something like 11-1 or 11-2. She had one hell of a stroke! She didn't seem to think much between shots either, just broke and ran out Earl Strickland style.

Wishing you the best of luck Sarah in cracking the glass ceiling of the US Open. The officials of the Open should be congratulated for making this a true Open.
