Scott Frost broke his wrist this week

I've broken both wrists and have probably seen close to 20 others broken, I've seen 4-5 broken exactly like Scott's. They all were from punching something that wouldn't give..... Not saying that IS the case here, but it IS a possibility.

That was my first thought as well. I don't have facebook so I don't know what the break look like, but speaking from my experience of having the back of my hand touch my arm. The only way a wrist would require surgery like that us via a straight on impact that caused the wrist to bend when it shouldn't. Either he punched something, or he had a horrendous fall. Neither of which i'd be out telling people about.

I'd find a sport that has frequent wrist injuries....Soccer? Talk to the coach, ask him who they use for repairs. I posed a similar question to the USOC Olympic weightlifiting coach about hernias to start the conversation. Eventually I found a hospital where all the MD's used the same doc, for these repairs.
Looking for a good doc is similar to finding a good score or a good roofer or car mechanic. Takes some effort.

I wouldn't talk to a soccer coach or player for a wrist injury, even though that's where I busted mine up. Got tripped up, put my hands out to brace my fall. Hand ended up right on top of the soccer ball as it got kicked. Hockey would be a better sport to ask people about for wrist injuries.

financial aid

Pretty much every hospital has a financial aid department, separate from their billing. Last I knew any hospital that took federal money had to do a certain amount of free work. They charge more than the doctor himself so negotiate their bill down to reason.

I have been dealing with a local hospital for six or eight years. Went in to have a battery changed, fifteen minutes in surgery, another thirty in recovery. Bill was $70K. By now I know that medicare and the insurance companies either tell the hospitals what they will pay or they negotiate everything so I decided, not for the first time, to negotiate my co-pay. Didn't work out quite as I planned, they waived everything!

I hit something that didn't move with my grip hand years ago. All the bones in my hand jumped over the bones in my wrist, dislocated all those suckers with one shot! My wrist was instantly twice it's normal size. Wasn't going to be a picnic putting the bones in place now but I knew it would be a lot less fun after everything was swollen and inflamed. I grabbed my fingers one by one and pulled. The wrist was pretty unhappy for a month, didn't try to rope any bulls for another month, after that it works and bends just fine.

Bone healing

Fractures get harder to fix and manipulate after two weeks from the date of injury. Tens units and bone stimulators are not quite the same. Bone healing depends on which bone is busted, location of break, displacement, etc. also slower healing or nonhealing if you are a smoker. Havent seen the pics but if the fracture is displaced and worse through a joint he should orthopedic hand specialist not a general othopedist. I wish him luck with this.

I am under the impression that emergency rooms can not turn people away, is this still so? Assuming it is, there is a Mayo Clinic facility in Phoenix. Mayo Emergeency rooms do not seem to be as packed, at least the one here isn't because no one really realizes they exist. They do. He should go there, get fixed and worry about the cost later. It is had to get a muligan with health issues. someone should pass the word to Scott.

Emergency Room can not turn you away, but they only have to stabilize you, and tell you to see an specialist who can deal with your problem.

Now this is where the situating become interesting. So you get on the phone, and start calling. First question is what insurance do you have? Net thing you hear six we don't accept that for payment, or we only see patient with insurance we accept.

My fishing buddy was a family practice doc, in Arcadia, CA. Many years ago. He would have to be on call to admit out of the ER so many days a year.

One knight I was over for dinner, his service caled, and said Arcadia Methodist Emergency Room was on the line.

Long and short of the conversation was the person need to be admitted was a person with no insurance.

Steve my buddy told the ER call county, and have a county ambulance take the patient to county general.

Steve wanted no part of working for free, as he was still paying off his medical school bills.

I'd think that most would be eligible for O care pretty much for free but i don't really know for sure.

As I personally know someone who's family has Affordable Medical Care Gold, a lot of specialist don't take it.

Too bad the plan Obama promised America, is not as representated.

Of course not! Many dont take Medicare either. Some dont take ANY insurance.

I know someone whose DR fired her because she couldnt afford any of the tests that he wanted for her. Now for $86/month she has her dr back and all the tests are covered.

You are referring to what's called TENS units I believe. Some people report success with pain management. I haven't heard much about bone healing but I'm not up on that. Probably best place to look is Amazon and read the reviews from users.

BTW...I think a "career ending" broken wrist for a pool player is a pretty big stretch.

That is not what he means. He means an actual bone stimulator. They are sometimes used in fusions or non union fractures. Research is inconclusive as to wether or not they actually work, and most insurance companies don't cover them due to that.

You know whats really funny to me about facebook postage?? He posts about his wrist being broken and never fully explains WHY??? Why the hell is your wrist broken?? Just like everybody else that say... "oh my poor grandmother is in the hospital and needs your prayers.. Please send her some prayers.."

OK???? WHY??? What is the problem? If you are going to post on facebook about your personal issues then give the goddamn details to why we should help or give "prayers" to those in need. Anytime I see a post like this i view it as attention seeking. Im not saying Scott is attention seeking by why hasnt he posted the main reason for his "mishap". Why in three pages of facebook posts have we not seen what actually happened to him. God bless him because it is tragic (photos look really bad) but FFS tell us what happened.

He wasn't asking for money, just recommendations for doctors. I guess I can see your point in that most people would want the rest of the story on how it happened but it's really not necessary.

FB is about networking so Scott posting what the situation is and asking his network for their advice on doctors is fine. No real need to explain more than that.

Doctors & Hospitals want Insurance that is pre-authorized, and Co-Pays at time of service. Sorry to say too many people have stiffed both Doctors & Hospitals, so the old trust thing is no long the way most do business any more.

Oh, I know this.... Think Scott does too, that's why he's working Facebook so hard looking for a friend of a friend deal.
