Scott Frost vs The So Called One Pocket Greats

Sounds like you're talking about Keith.
When I could keep him off the crap tables and out of the poolroom/bar he was a threat to win any event he played in. Unfortunately that was not always the case.

Haha, most of these guys who are gamblers have their vices, I am not sure whether they like the action or the money more. I know people who can win thousands and not be happy leaving the casino, but they could spend a whole night and blow it all and be happy as can be.

Actually philw, and with all due respect - over at onepocket.org I made the offer to SJDinPHX to bet on the matches of this years one pocket tournament at the DCC. He declined and his reason was "Of the 300-400 players competing there last year, I knew about a dozen of them pretty well, (all over 50) and another dozen by name. Probably 20-30 more that I'd heard of, but forgot".

This shows me that in today's world, those of us that were around to see today's and yesterday's players aren't even looking at today's players.

Why do you think that is? I know the answer.

Just caught this post, by accident today...and it just re-enforces my opinion of you...You don't have a f-ing clue.

As for me "declining"...you were supposed to deal with me through Steve Lomako, who is more up on the younger guys...You dogged it big time...remember, or do I have to furnish links ?????

Why is it that no one ever mentions Clem or Joey Spaeth when they talk about the great one pocket players of the past?

Yeah Donny... that is true....

Lol I don't automatically think my generation is better, I don't have any pride in that way. I'm just going by what I have seen, common sense, and I'm also very open minded. If the next generation is better when I'm 60 I'll be the first to admit it.

Here is a common sense example even if you never saw any of these guys play one pocket: Every older player will admit that the players from 30 and 40 years ago didn't kick like they do today, and the reason they say that is because they didn't have to kick because 9ball had different rules... So if they couldn't kick as well as the players of today, how in the hell can they execute great kick shots in one pocket like they do today??

This is double pane sound proof glass! There is no way that lady heard the screams from her apartment! Yes!! Yes!! Can you feel that buddy!! Huh!! Huh!! Huh!! I have exercised the demons! This house is clear. Losers... Losers... Lahoo... saherrr...

Lol just a little ace ventura humor. I feel like I just made a huge point in this thread.

How about this one though... More people had more reason to be able to play better then. there was more money, more action, more serious players, more competition.

All the sports that have increased in talent over the years have also increased in one other thing... PAY!!!!

Billiards is one of the few sports that hasn't even maintained the pay rates with inflation rates, let alone increased in pay.

If billiards could increase the paydays, you would find top players coming out of the wood work I think...

total agreement.....

Shannon the Canon. America's most entertaining player to watch in action against anyone.
The closet entertainment value to Minnesota Fats alive today.
That fact that pool Sponsors have not caught on to this illustrates the main reason pool is not getting the coverage it should ..sponsors [suits] have lots of money by zero creativity or vision..pity.

great thread!

i like this conversation...hopefully it will keep going.i think watchez touched on something that gets everyones blood flowing which is what we all need sometime.everyone has been making some really good points.
this year or yesteryear?hmmm....i wouldn't know where to begin.so many talented onepocket players from both generations.scott,shannon,gabe,alex,..etc.ronnie, ed kelly,worst...etc.
i don't know but i do have a question for jay or bill or anyone willing to jump in.theres no mention of flyboy on here.i think he's in the 1 pocket hof but i hardly hear about him anymore.saw him match up with james walden back in the early 90s for almost 3 days straight...seriously he was a grinder.my question is how does he rate amongst these other giants of 1 pocket?

p.s.thanks to all for this great thread

I think you must live in a parallel universe. People with money (the suits) don't want to have anything to do with men's pool because they don't want to be associated with what comes with it. Ask them. Do you know anybody who has a suit?

Why is it that no one ever mentions Clem or Joey Spaeth when they talk about the great one pocket players of the past?

I knew both these men. Clem was acknowledged by his peers as the best of his era, right alongside Rags Fitzpatrick. Joey meanwhile was a top player but a ball under the best - Kelly, Jersey Red, and Shorty. Maybe 9-7 under Ronnie. I played Joey Spaeth in my prime getting 8-7 and the break. It was close for a while but he ended up ahead a few games. We played fifty a game in the early 70's. A good bet back then.
