Scotty Townsend Rumor

Where did all of this talk about world record high-diving come from? The guy jumped from a bridge.... penciling into the water, not diving at all. The bet was he wouldn't jump - and he did.

How high was it? I heard it was HIIIIIIIIIIIGH. If it wasn't 150, so what I'm guessing it was WAY up there (NOT 75 feet). It was high enough for a big CORPORATION of people (educated gamblers who know not to bet on a 75ft jump) to bet against the fact that Scotty wouldn't DREAM of leaping, and he did.

If someone thinks the thread is horsesh*t, go get your cash, and I'll put Scotty in for whatever you're comfortable betting. We'll go back to whatever berserkly, unthinkably high bridge it was and we'll see who's full of it.

As long as it is at LEAST 150 feet, I'll put $500.00 down says he won't jump off it. You heard it here. I'm NOT just barking.... If he jumps, he wins my money. S**t, he'll need it for hospital bills. After I saw this thread, I read up a little bit on survivability statistics for jumping into water from different heights.

Trust me.. I seriously DOUBT it was 150 feet. Furthermore, if it was, his boots would have split when he hit..

Notwithstanding the OP's loss of all self control in this thread, Russ' original post was quite fascist (the edited post included). Either A.) he really believes the stuff he is shoveling, or B.) he is bored enough in life that this internet message board is the real world???

For the Mod's with ownership, assuming this is a business, with advertisers, why would you guys allow members to run off new posters like that (i think it is safe to say if post #2 in this thread never occured, the OP would still be around)....anyway....bad business and bad attitude (Russ).

I, for one, don't care if it's 150 or 50 feet. The point is that there were people there who saw how high it was and didn't believe he would jump from that height. They must have thought it was pretty high because they were willing to bet their cash on it.

Scotty sounds like a gifted story teller as well as pool player. He ought to produce some dvd's with stories and instructions. He might be the next Jerry Clower. Put a teaser clip up on youtube with a link to his website or a page on somebody else's site.

I only saw him play once. It was a bar box tournament and I saw him make the best jump shot I've seen. Actually it was a double jump shot. The guy he was playing stuck him an inch or so of the rail at the first diamond on a long rail. The object ball was in the jaws of pocket on he same side of table at the far end pocket. There were 2 balls along the rail in his way. The first at the second diamond and another at the fourth diamond. He jacks up and the cb jumps the fist ball, then bounces over the second ball and pockets the object ball. Everybody watching got a kick out of it. So did Scotty. You know how you laugh when you hit a shot perfectly. I think he qualifies as what we call "good people" here in the south.

Here's the scoop on the Golden Gate Bridge. It's 220 feet from the roadway to the water. It takes only four seconds to fall and you hit the water at 75 mph. To date nearly 1,400 have jumped and only 26 are known to have survived. On average one person jumps every 15 days.

The two towers that hold the bridge up are over 500 feet high. Only one person jumped from there (Steve Brody), and he lost his bet.

There was a controversial documentary made in 2006 entitled The Bridge, made by Eric Steel. It chronicled 23 or 24 suicides and actually showed footage of 19 of them. I'm sure it's available somewhere. There is also a New Yorker Magazine article written by Tad Friend in 2003 entitled Jumpers, about the same phenomenon.

It is unclear why you felt the need to reply in such a manner.

there was a show on discovery a few years ago about jumping/falling into water from descent heights, the cut off point is around 150 feet that you will likely be killed, it's because water has a "surface tension" the molecules on top stick together more than the others so the effect from great heights is similar to hitting concrete, bubble machines would be used to break the surface tension i'd assume that waves also would disrupt it, surface tension allows some bugs to walk on water, on myth busters last night they had a vat of corn starch? and if u step fast u can walk across it

similar to this is falling from a 2nd story building onto concrete, a lot of people don't think it would kill u but it depends on how your body hits the ground

I am hot on the trail of the FACTS concerning Scotty Townsend and his jump off of the bridge. I have it on good sources that he did jump off of the Mississippi River Bridge called the Huey P. Long Bridge which is located in Metairie, LA where I live. I must have missed it but have got a couple of names of people who supposedly were there and am in the process of checking them out. There are plenty of speculation about who actually witnessed it and I want all of you to know that I will get to the bottom of this legend.

Some people claim that he climbed to the TOP of the Huey P. Long Bridge (don't know how high that is) and jumped with all of his clothes on. The bet was for either $5400.00 or $3400.00 and they were trying to get more bets down as Scotty jumped over the side of the bridge into the Mississippi River. When he finally made land he supposedly went straight to the hospital with TWO sprain wrists/arms. AZ's roving reporter is on the job.

fellas fellas fellas....
The point of the story was that dude jumped off of some shite that nobody thought he would jump off of... and it was tall... tall enough to pull the money out of peoples pockets...

quit splitting hairs and questioning every single litte thing.... enjoy the story for what it is .....

I for one am looking forward to meeting this guy in a few months.. I will be relocating to place near the hole thang and will make it a point to find Scotty at the monthly tourney there..... this dude sounds like a trip to hang around!!

i think this is a great thread and i would of posted earlier but didnt want to be taken the wrong way, i'm not saying it didn't happen from x amount of feet above the water and that if it was 150 feet you'd automatically die, there's a lot of different factors that would decide the outcome, the rivers current could possibly break up the surface tension and make it a fairly safe dive for all i know

jumping would be the easy part, swimming back to the bank in any descent sized river even if you aren't injured is a task within itself

Smokeandapancak,
You are so, all over this thread! You get REP for having such great insight. You are so right. "Enjoy the story for what it is" and I think everyone in their own way has been doing this. But before you know it, we'll have Jamie Hyneman throwing a test dummy off of the Huey P. :p

Scotty is a great guy and you'll like him. I've always said that Scotty is the most liked pool player in the world. I've never heard ONE player or sweat hog say a mean-spirited word toward Scotty in front of his face or behind his back. I don't think that can be said for ANY other pool player including this wannabee. :D :D

EXACTLY! who gives a rats ass if it was 130 or 140 or whatever, the point is you'd need balls the size pomegranates to even think about jumping off of something like that

That's what I said to begin with and what started all of the BS:

You can't jump 150-200 feet into water without a bubble machine or things breaking either but it seemed a shame to let facts get in the way of good stories!

Hu

A little reduction in the height of the bridge and Joey's latest information that Scotty was hurt seems far more likely than claims that he wanted to double the bet to jump from still higher. It is still a great story. Also, the Mississippi is roughly a mile wide under the Huey P, anybody that jumps still has to make a pretty impressive swim of at least the better part of a mile by the time the current carries them a ways. Scotty is one more brave or crazy guy, maybe both! :D

Thanks for posting that pic. All this discussion about exactly how far he jumped becomes moot when you take a look at that pic. Scotty is insane to jump from there. I wonder if he also plays russian roulette for the cash.

I like Scotty. Always have. I would pay him NOT to jump.

TAP TAP TAP! Don't get me wrong, I'm loving these stories, and if there'd be a jump then I'd want to watch, but I wouldn't want to egg someone on to do something that carries such a high risk of DEATH. :(
