In the near future I am looking to purchase a scruggs or a sugartree as my next cue. I value playability above all else and prefer a stiffer hit. I would love to hear some opinions on both cues. Most everyone on AZ is very knowledgeable and I would greatly value your thoughts. Thx for your help guys.

I hope I posted this in the right spot.

i'm a sucker for an ivory jointed scruggs! but sugartrees hit pretty well too. it's a toss up i guess. if you're getting an ivory jointed cue i'd go with a scruggs. if you're going with a phenolic joint i'd go with a sugartee

I have never hit with a Sugartree and have never hit with a Scruggs I didn't LOVE. I have handled over 30 Tim Scruggs cues in my life and owned 3 of them. If I were presented with this choice and the price was equal I'd choose the Scruggs.

I have actually never owned or played with a phenolic jointed Scruggs that I can remember. All of the ones we had were either, stainless steel, ivory, or wood to wood for the sneaky petes.

I sure do miss my last big Scruggs (big for me) and wish I had it back. I currently own a TS sneaky with an ivory joint that's not for sale.

Moral of the story: Never sell a cue to finance a vacation, even a honeymoon. Marriages don't last but a cue will be your friend forever. ;-)

actually i've been reading this thread a little more and i just thought of something. i'd be a sugartree if i wanted something less fancy that let the wood do the talking. i'd go with a scruggs if i wanted something fancier

Honestly.....thats a hard choice...so many good qualities in both cues. I have had 2 Scruggs , 1 Ivory jointed and I stainless jointed...2 diff hits, but both very good playing cues.....now, I am more of a wood to wood jointed cue person..and I like the feel of a wrapless cue.

If you want a super pretty wood cue, that will make you go WOW when you see it...id get a Sugartree.....Sugartrees are hard hitting cues...I like the "pink" sound when you hit with a Sugartree...I love a stiff hitting cue.

Sugartrees are harder to come by IMHO...but seriously, you cant go wrong with either cue

I will have my new Sugartree 6 point, scalloped cue next month...I will post pics as soon as I get it from Eric

i honestly think you can not compare them, either you are the piloted joint type-o-guy or the flat faced wood-to-wood.

For me, only flat faced, wood-to-wood joints makes agood player, i just can not stand the hit of stainless or piloted joints.
My main playing cues are a plain bluegrass and a beautiefull sugartree sneaky, and i absolutely love the hit of both of them.
my bluegrass is a little bit more forgiveable when i am not playing my best game but when i am on my highest level, the sugartree is the best cue that i ever played with.

David

Thanks for all your thoughts and opinions. What cue would you say would hold its value better?

Sold a Criss Craft boat, should have kept it. ..Long story....JIm

I have never hit with a Sugartree and I have with a Scruggs and was impressed. Ill wager Sugartree makes a damn good cue from the comments in these posts. Having said that Scruggs is in the cue makers hall of fame, Sugartree will be one day. If I could have only one it would be the Scruggs and that is no means a slap on Sugartree. All things considered Scruggs in reality wont be around as long as Eric. One is probably at the waining years of his career and the other has many years ahead God willing to both of them.

I would have to agree with this statement. I have played with several Sugartrees and loved all of them. They are very consistent and very, very solid. The shaft wood is incredible. I am fortunate enough to own the TAR ST and the woods in this cue are AMAZING! I have never played with a Tim Scruggs cue but I have heard from tons of people they are great. 8-ball Rat has convinced me to order one and I will at the beginning of the new year. My cue budget will renew then.

This is my humble opinion...

Get the Scruggs. You'll have time to change your mind and/or add a Sugartree, but Scruggs is in the HOF already.

there is no question,a seasoned cuemaker that is tried and true and stands behind his product better than any one in the industry! Tim and Mike are in the top in the industry and i can say that i have tried both cues and only cary one! hope that helps:grin:

Great opinions guys. Thank you all very much. I am leaning towards purchasing a Scruggs. I am going to try one out out next week. I know right where to go when I am ready to purchase one. I have seen some very nice scruggs on the AZ forum. Thanks again guys.

let us know which one you buy. i'm telling you bro the ivory jointed scruggs are the triple nuts. i had a chance to hit a few balls with an az'rs (socalrick) and it played fantastic.

Thanks poolplayer2093. I will probably be buying a Scruggs from someone here on AZ. I will let everyone know when I purchase one.

I had the chance to shoot with a sugartree tonight and I am in love with the hit. It has a very distinctive sound and feel when you strike the cue ball. The scruggs I shot with last week was great but I liked the sugartree better. I will be buying a sugartree in the comming weeks....hopefully from one of my fellow Azer's.
