Scruggs Sneaky Playing Cues

I have owned a bunch of them that I used as playing cues. Also owned a bunch in the late 80's and 90's that got used for break cues. We could buy them back then for very little, and they broke and played well.Currently using a sneaky from someone else, but my love of sneaky's started with Scruggs sneaky petes.

Now days the trick is finding one with a shaft that isn't a toothpick, of course with all the after market shafts that is probably less a issue for many.

I don't own one but know of two guys that have one and shoot with it, one in Ttyler, Tx. and the other in Natchez, Ms.--Smitty

What most don't realize is Bob Frey made EVERY ONE of those Scruggs Sneaky Petes that so many lust after. He still makes them, just with his logo. Just buy one.

And to be honest, nostalgia aside, the newer ones are better cues.

Jeff W. made them all after Bob Frey left. Just a clarification.

Bob still does make a great cue.

You're correct Tony, Jeff did make them after Bob left, but if you re-read my original post I stated Bob made all of the ones people lust after, they play different.

You're also correct in stating Bob makes a great cue, one of the most underrated cue makers of all time.

Is there any way to tell which are the ones Bob made? Otherwise, its seems to me very easy to misrepresent another sneaky pete as Bob Frey's work.

I have my Scruggs sneaky pete tucked away for occasional play, most of the time I am using my 30+ year old merry widow :) And both have about the same feel for hit and playability.

That's a great idea.... I think I'll go downstairs right now and hit some with my TS SP

my pool mate has an old old Scruggs sneaky and a new Frey sneaky, and I would strongly disagree with those who said Frey is better. it may be the case with the 2 particular cues I tried but the Frey is far inferior with inferior wood.

I really don't know if a sure fire way.

The handle on the older cues may be thicker and sometimes the joint would be a flat faced big pin. I don't think Jeff made many or any like those.

No cue maker in the world can make all their cues hits the same or play the same way....maybe it's the veitnam humanity that's make the Frey didn't hit so good

I used one for many years and had to hock is once...then it got sold before could buy it back.

I have often wished I could have it back, to compare it to my diveney.

What about placement of the logo? On the delrin buttcap, versus stamped between the point?

I did at one point. I think most Maryland players had a Scruggs Sneaky as their playing cue at one point or another... that or a Frey.
