Serious need for an instructor

Good evening all,
OK...I was out of the game for a looong time and I've been trying to get back into playing shape. I haven't played in an APA league ever, for one it wasn't around the last time I was playing seriously, but if I were to put an estimate on it I'd probably be about a 3. Consistently run 3-5 balls playing either 8 or 9 ball. Maybe run a rack 1-2 times in ten. I've run all the drills I can remember, found some new ones, and hell, made some up to help me with things that have changed due to age, eye sight, posture etc.
I have improved over the last couple months. I spend about 15 hours a week playing about half of that against my wife who I'm helping to learn her fundamentals.
I don't think I'm going to improve much more than I have without with some guidance.

So all that to ask, is there a coach in the midwest, primarily the Wichita, KS area that I can reach out to for some instruction. I'm not hurting for cash but I'd rather not have to pay travel for someone because I know that I won't ever be able to recoup those costs as my primary intention is to maybe play a few local tourneys when time allows and just feel comfortable playing a bit closer to where I was almost 20 years ago. Heck, I may already be playing better but I have very fond memories of myself. :)

I know there's a wealth of knowledge and experience on this board and I'm very glad to have been able to interact with everyone and respect everyone's opinion.

Scott Lee is on here all th time and is good, or Stan Shuffet(wrong spelling) come to mind in your area, both guys know their stuff. Scott is great for basic fundementals-they both are, what am i talking about?. Look them up.


remember one thing, just because someone plays good dosent mean they are great teachers, great teachers dont awalys play great. There are exceptions I have had lessions from champions that were great and a waste of time. my point is dont go looking for a chamoion as a instuctor, look for a instructor with great students. like Stan or Scott. there are lots more than them, but they I know are both great!

Scott Lee or RandyG...both post regularly on here. Randy is from Dallas, but does a good bit of traveling. Scott is out of Michigan, but he is on the road just about non-stop. Either would be great for what you are looking for.
Stan is also a fine instructor, but he is in KY which might be a little bit too far.

Based on your description of you playing ability you would be at least a 4 maybe a 5.
If Scott is in your area you should take advantage of his skill as a teacher. I highly recommend him.
 
Thank you everyone for the very quick responses....It is very much appreciated. My uncle, the man that taught me to play, was a student of Ray Martin what feels like a hundred years ago, and I always heard talk of Jerry Briesath when I was a young man.

I've been doing some "research" since Fatboy's first response and found that Scott was a protoge of Jerry. Please, please, don't construe this as anything negative towards any of the instructors mentioned here. I don't have one single instance of personal experience to compare any of the people mentioned in their field of teaching.

With that said, Mr. Lee, if you come across this thread and you're in the Wichita area any time, I'd be happy to pay for a few hours of your time.

Again, to RandyG and Stan Shuffett, please don't take any disrespect from this post. I'm 100% certain that you can provide me with the skills and knowledge that I'm lacking and am not opposed to spending a few hours with you if you happen to be in the area.

I've been trying to learn the new names of the game that have shown up over the years and tend to feel more comfortable with the names of people/products that I remember.

Let me ask you a couple of questions:

If you set up an object ball on the center-spot of the table and place the cue-ball down near a corner pocket; out of 10 attempts, how many of the OBs can you drop in the opposite corner pocket? {long straight shot}

If you were to place the cue ball on the head spot and an object ball 1 diamond away from a corner pocket and 1/2 a diamond from the back rail; how may times out of 10 can you drop the OB? {long delicate cut shot}

If you were to place the CB in the jaws of the corner pocket and an object ball 2 balls from the same corner down table and make a corner to corner kick, how many times out of 10 can you drop the OB? {easy long kick}

If you were to place the CB in the corner pocket and an OB near the far tip of the same side pocket a finger from the rail; how many times out of 10 can you drop the OB in the side pocket from a 2-rail kick? {spin and speed dependent kick}

if you can run 1-2 racks every 10 games then you are well above a 3 who struggles to put 3 balls together.

i have never heard anything but great things about mark wilson. he lives somewhere in that area. alot of the pros in the wpba go to him.
