Shaft wax / sealant

I tried Johnsons Paste and the Bowling Alley paste. The Karseal Cue Wax that I got at Muellers works the best for me leaving the shaft and handle very slick even if I don't use heat from burnishing.... but I do burnish the shaft until it's quite warm.

Both the Johnson's and the Butchers leave the handle sticky and the same goes for the table rails. When I use the Karseal on the table rails.... yep... slick!

NO.. I don't own stock in Karseal :D Just passing on what has worked and is working for me.

I tried the Butchers too, last night. Not crazy about the feel. It seems a bit sticky now but I do not own a lathe. I applied it as Varney suggested but am not crazy about the results. YMMV.

Curious if anyone else had any luck with it without the aid of a lathe??

Like I said earlier.....very LIGHTLY rub the shaft with 0000 steel wool & it'll give your a silky smooth satin finish that is in no way sticky....while still giving your shaft the protection of the wax.;)

Heck yea. I feel the first application requires that you wax up your cue twice, 0000 steel wooling it after each application.

The only downside is that I have my entire pool league team begging me to maintain their cue for them.

Occasionally you'll get lucky and find it stocked in a hardware store....most often NOT though. Easier to just Google it & order online & have it shipped to your doorstep. True...with shipping charges you'll end up paying double....but with gas prices you could very quickly spend more. I wouldn't worry about the extra shipping charge....remember....one can will last you a lifetime. There are other waxes that many will try to convince you are the same or better....not so much....hold out for the real deal in the white & orange can.;)
I haven't used wax on my shafts for a long time, but after reading this thread I decided to try the Butcher's Bowling Alley Wax. I found it in stock at my local Ace Hardware Store and I put some on one of my playing shafts to see how I liked it and it works great. I think i'll use it from now on on my shafts.

Thanks for the tip,
James

Are you guys letting the paste dry first? I've tried it both ways and my results are not that impressive (unless my shafts were slick already). What techniques are you using?

JED

I use a micro fiber towel that I cut into two 6" peices. I cleaned the shaft with alcohol and Magic Eraser. Carful not too much alcohol is needed. Let that dry then apply the Butcher's wax with the microfiber towel I rub it long and hard to build up some heat, set it a side let it dry. Using the other clean microfiber towel I buff the shaft again long and hard to make it hot. This worked Great! I have five shafts in the last couple of days all with Excellent results!
p.s. I bought my microfiber towels on Ebay over a year ago $9.00 for a package of 12 large towels, I cut them and use them for my Harley (blue y2k Road King).
Good Luck Jed
Thanks to the Fourm.....this is what makes them GREAT..!!

Just got mine yesterday, tried it as per recommendations, worked great. Very smooth. If repeated coats keep the shaft cleaner that would be great.

Hey Varney,

I received my (2) cans of Butcher's from Ace Hardware a few days ago and now the Mother's Car Wax has been returned to the garage (where it belongs) ...

This Bowling Alley Wax is the BOMB !!! Thanks again for recommending it ...

You are welcome sir. Like I said guys...the more you use it, the better the results. It builds up a nice barrier that fills in the pores and will keep your shafts from turning blue. Wait until you gentlemen have used it for a year...LOL...your shafts will be so slick its ridiculous!:)

Another satisfied "customer"

Mr. Varney,

I would like to join those thanking you for your recommendation on purchasing and how to apply the butchers wax. Great product and it works exactly as you described.

Thanks again,

Chris

Hi,

I have just received and tried my Butcher's Bowling Alley Wax.

First impression: Wew, smelly

However, the smell is not of the kind I get headaches of, so it's not really bad.

First of all, I cleaned my shafts with one of these magic cleaner-sponges and Isopropanol. This works fairly easy. One of my shafts needed a little more work close to the joint, to clean a stain of hand-residues.

Afterwards, I burnished lightly with a piece of printer paper.

I applied the wax with a kitchen towel and let the shafts rest for about 10 minutes. Afterwards the wax was hard and easy to polish with another kitchen towel.

*update: If too much wax is applied on the shaft, it can feel a little sticky again after some hours in the case. I just rewiped the shaft with kitchen paper, and the shaft was fine. :-)

The shafts feel really slick right now. Thanks for the hint, it's a very good product. :-)

Regards,

Detlev

Got my tub in the mail yesterday.

Went through the whole ME cleaning process, then I burnished until very hot with a piece of leather and let it cool.

Applied first coat and immediately rubbed in until hot. Waited for it to cool down and then buffed with a clean cloth. At this point it still felt like raw wood so I repeated the process a further 3 times.

Now it feels like it has some protection but has a stickiness to it. Last step was burnish again with a peice of leather and now the damn thing is PERFECT!

Up to this point all I used was slipstic and a piece of leather but the shaft got dirty very fast. With the Butchers wax it is almost as smooth, and will probably stay clean for a very long time. Highly recommended!
