Shane and Earl up at World Cup of Pool

What gets me is how ANYONE could say that a world championship win, let alone the THREE, that Earl has is not relevant now. If you win a world championship, especially the ones in the Matchroom era when the title was a race to 17 and you had to battle through group stages with short races, then you are and always will be a world class player until you physically can't hold a cue anymore.

We love to talk about how this sport is one of the few, maybe the only one, where age isn't really a factor as long as a person is healthy enough to play. Yet then we ignore the obvious examples of this being true to say a player is over the hill, washed up, etc....if they aren't winning as much as they used to 20 years ago. We conveniently ignore the fact that the rest of the world has gotten stronger and stronger producing many more truly world class players. This is due in part to the shining examples of how to play at a world class level that Earl and Efren and Nick Varner and others provided. And in the other part due to the availability of matches, instructionals, coaching and support for a lot of those players.

I would be willing to bet that Earl still shoots in the AccuStats 900 range on average. He runs miles every day and stays fit. As far as being an example of athletic prowess most of us could only dream of being fit and playing at a world class level in anything at his age. Yes, he has mental issues but they are not the kind that really matter to any but a small group of people. He suffers from them more than any person he has ever had an encounter with. Yes it's sad when he acts up, yes it can be embarassing but be honest, be super honest, no one has ever come up to chastise you for being an American because of Earl's outbursts.

Some competitive people get out-of-line, it happens so what? Tiger throws clubs, Rodman throws elbows, Mcenroe threw raquets, who cares and why? If we are really honest deep down we watch the volatile ones hoping that we will get a show to talk about. People don't go to Nascar to watch cars go peacefully around the track, they want to see crashes and spinouts, and cars touching while jockeying for position.

If the promoters wanted to stop Earl they would have done it. I am sure Earl been "talked to" prior to events a time or two and it's not pleasant. But at the end of the day he is an entertaining highly competitive player who can still BRING IT at a world class level.

I asked him in New York earlier this year if he ever won a tournament where he ran out every set. He said twice he has played in short set events where he ran out every time he had an open shot and won the tournament without a mistake. He said he won one of them by running out every set he played. That could be a ripley's believe it or not statement but once you have actually played with Earl it becomes much more believable. The guy's firepower is truly STILL at another level above most pros he faces in my opinion.

Earl is still world class but he didn't play world class pool in the first two matches. Almost cost USA the match against Russia with his sloppy safely play. Those mistakes will be too much to overcome in the next rounds so hopefully he will get it together and play to his ability.

The thing with watching and commenting is that it all looks different out there. World class players make mistakes. They make them at every level in tournaments and don't make them on purpose.

As every player knows in order to win a tournament you need to have some rolls. You need to have your mistakes balanced out by mistakes from others, you need some lucky rolls, you need for the opponents to have some bad rolls. Especially in the short race format.

I predict that England A will make at least two mistakes in their match against the USA. Either World Champion Darren Appleton or world class player (and WC?) Karl Boyes will make one or both of them at some point.

And the USA will probably make a few as well. Because that's how it goes. Playing PERFECT is the exception. Playing at a super high level with very very few mistakes is what a professional player does. Most of the halfway decent players on this forum could run out a lot of the racks that the pros do, we just don't do it as consistently as they do it. We know the shots. We have made all the same shots. We just can't make them under the same amount of pressure.

When two powerhouse teams match up then it will be a coin flip. Whoever makes the least mistakes and gets the best rolls will win because both teams play nearly perfect pool anyway.

Hmmm, I watched the russia match and shane was leaving him terrible and he bailed out the team with great shots. His break was no good though and cost them a few games.

It should be a wonderful match. And you're right it will probably come down to the least mistakes. Pool does at almost every level. Do you know what time that match will take place Pacific time?

I would love to see the limeys slink away with their tail between their legs after all the banter.

The USA vs ENGLAND match will be the last match this Saturday afternoon. The final session will start at 11:30 am, Saturday, US Pacific time. If you just want to tune in to the USA match, start watching at around 12:30 pm US pacific.

Thank you for this amazing post and account of the legendary Earl Strickland!!
Well said!!

I haven't had the opportunity to follow very closely. But I did just watch the match between China and England #2. The Chinese are friggin fearless! What a great performance. Can someone tell me if China is still in it?

Yes, China is still in it. The match you watched was the last match they had. China faces Austria in the first match (of 4 matches total for the day) on Saturday morning.

Cool. Thanks. Those guys, for a lack of a better word, were SMOOTH!

England vs. USA at 7:30 p.m., British time. What time is that for East Coast? I wonder.

If I'm reading the chart right, we're 5 hours behind on the East Cost. That would make this match start 2:30 p.m., EASTERN Time, I think.

For United States, Midwest, i.e., Des Moines, Iowa, that would be 1:30 p.m.

For Denver, Colorado, area, that would be 12:30 p.m.

For California, that would be 11:30 a.m.

LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE!

No those guys were perfect... They have to be... Why? Because there are too many players behind them playing the same style for them not to shoot that way.... There is no taking what is given.. Every shot on the edge of the razor blade with success or someone will passover you....

That's what I see watching them... They continuosly shoot the required shot regardless of percentage... You have enough of them in a field one of them will make it to the end playing "perfect"... We will see how many of them make it to legend status like Buste.. Efren... Earl... The blade is narrow and sharp... The style is impressive and abrasive.... It will wear you down and when you start to shoot safe you will lose enough to those who don't that you will be yesterdays news......

A lazy Q :o: Who's on this England team that SVB and Earl play?

I'm a bit time impaired due to High Point, NC furniture market starting in 3 weeks.
