Just heard that John Schmidt went undefeated to win the 73 player Starcades Billiards event at Fort Walton Beach, FL this past weekend.

In the 3rd place match he played Tony Crosby, who had him stuck 6-1 when Schmidt ran 7 racks to get to the hill. He then prevailed in a safety battle to win the match.

In the winner's match he and Scotty Townsend were at 2-2, when Scotty pushed out from the break. Schmidt made the shot, then ran 7 racks for the victory.

John attributes his current good play to his new OB-1 shaft.

I don't know the rest of the leader board or the payouts. Perhaps someone could post those.

Thanks Doc

I used to look forward to the Starcade events at Andy's all year. He was a
great guy and I am glad that Robin is still keeping it going.

Strong performance. Congrats to Mr '403' and thanks for the report.

running seven racks is strong... twice in one tournament is a great thing, congratulations to john!

hopefully john notices the thread and chimes in with some thoughts.

Great tournament John. Seven pack X 2 is awsome. I would need the breaks from you:) Johnnyt

You guys are so funny. I've been down before and had a twelve pack. I was walking a little from side to side, but drinking 12 during a match can really make playing safe tough. Remember, shoot for the ball in the middle.

thats cool, i met John S this year at the Derby, great guy. its great to see big runs like that,

I was there for the match with Tony Crosby....I think Tony made a mistake, John ran out, then John put up 5 racks.

I left when John beat Rick Howard for the first time, don't know about the 2nd 7 pack. That would have been awesome to watch. He's got a really strong break and I think that's what helped him a lot.

hi

thanks for the kind words.the tables were playing easy but i did get in dead punch,.against scotty the score was 2-2 and i did run the set out 7 racks unfinished.against tony crosby he had me 6-1 and i got a shot and ran 7 racks to reach the hill then got hooked on the break and pushed out.they put a nice tourney on and i want to thanks robin and starcade billiards for the 1500 added which they do twice a year.see you guys next time.

The Tournament

1st. John Schmidt

2nd. Trent from ATL

3rd. Rick Howard

4th. Scotty Townsend

5th-6th. Stoney Stone, Tony Crosby

I believe the above is correct. Schmidt was breaking great the whole weekend as I remember. In the end that's what helped him overcome some of his matches. I don't recall two 7 packs but I know he hit a string of them in his first match against Scotty and came back from down like 6 to 1 against Crosby to win the match. Rick Howard and Trent got the greatest draw of all time. Not taking away from either of them it was just stunning. There were 8 players capable of winning the event and 6 of them got stuck in the same bracket which was bracket B while Rick and Trent drew bracket A and ended up at the top and bottom. It was a safe bet they would win all their matches to play each other for a shot at playing the winner of bracket B for the winner of the winners bracket. That was between Tony and Schmidt. The play was fair as some played great matches and missed balls they shouldn't in others. Nobody played top notch the whole weekend. It came in spurts. One good match of doing what you should and one match of weird misses. Scotty had a good win over Crosby in the losers side to get to 4th. I recall the score once being 7 to 2 Scotty's way but can't remember the final score. Hope that helps satisfy your curiosity. Forgot to say how I played like pure poo the entire weekend. Guess that's what happens when you don't play. I couldn't get loose. Felt real tight the entire time and it seemed like I was poking and punching shots instead of smoothing them. I sure wish I had the love for the game as I did when I started playing.

Thanks,
Josh Hillard

Just curious. How many spectators were watching the matches?

Thanks,

I've had the OB-1 for about 5 months now I think, and it hasn't made more than 2 x 3-packs and a couple of 2-packs... Guess I have the old model... ;)

John

IMO, anyone is impressive to watch when they don't miss (unless your the one losing). But John is a really nice guy which makes even better to watch! John, if you read this, I was the guy at Grady's tournament in 04 (Gulfport) that woke you up while you were trying to get some sleep in the little office area. I was counting the $18,000 in entry fees for the bank pool game that Shannon won. Sorry, never got a chance to apologize for that.

John- its not the Arrow, its the indian! You are a real treat to watch! Congrats on the victory!

I agree with that, but I look at it like this...

I spoke on the phone with John Schmidt for quite a while the other night and he had nothing but great things to say about the OB-1 shaft. I always respect what John has to say, and he's peaked my interest enough to where I am going to try one out and compare it to the Predator Z (which I am currently using and extremely happy with). I'm just curious, and FWIW, John ran a 403 within days of switching to the OB-1 - it's not like I think I'll run 403, but if I can get close to 200 again I'll be content.

I know how John is about shafts - he really loved the shafts that Bobby Hunter made for him - enough to where he wanted to hold on to them when selling one of his cues a few years ago. Knowing that, and knowing how John is meticulously particular about his equipment, this tells me that the OB-1 must be worth all of the hype. If I don't like it, I still have my Predator Z. If I do like it, I'll thank John Schmidt for pointing me in the right direction.

It's not just the player. I still have guys that make comments about my Predator shaft - how its high tech and how they don't need it, its not fair, blah blah blah. People like that remind of when Bjorn Borg tried to make a comeback in the 1990's shooting with an old wood-framed tennis racket. He stuck his nose up to evolution and technology - was easy pickings for the competition (DUH!). Eventually Borg saw what he was up against and changed his mind about his comeback. He retired again, and eventually showed up on the seniors tour playing with a modern racket. That's what I think of when I hear people make comments about these new, low deflection shafts.

Equipment has changed a lot over the years. Simonis 860 - all these new tips - shafts - jump cues - Diamond tables - you either keep up and adapt, or you get left in the dust of those players that are smart enough make their games available to these new products.
